How many guys can watch play only the snare drum these days and be totally mesmerized like this?

Tony Williams plays the simplest stuff in his own inimitable voice and it’s always completely spellbinding to watch and hear.

Exactly!! Such a deep and strong voice on the instrument.

Mehhh, I don't agree. His playing was good. His solos were tiresome.

@@Gretsch0997 you bothered to add a comment just to crap on my love of Tony Williams?

Sturla- Thanks for posting this clinic of Tony Williams performing this dynamic open solo. It was the opener to his set at the Commodore in Vancouver on June 25th, 1989. It was somewhat dramatic in that his performance was the focus for a few minutes before the quintet slowly, individually headed to their marks for the rest of the tune & evening. Same lineup of stellar musicians here too: Mulgrew Miller p), Wallace Roney tr), Bill Pierce horns), and Bob Hurst b).

I've never understood why he'd insist on making the audience watch him practice a double stroke roll? I'm 54. And I'm still wondering. Seriously, I'm not wrong. What's up with that?

It's ALOT MORE THAN A DOUBLE STROKE ROLL ☆☆☆☆☆.

@ so what is “amazing” about this open roll ? It’s a warmup exercise not a drum solo
