As it was said: StuG crews tended to live short but exciting lives... An interesting note is that these didn't belong to the tank corps, but artillery, but replaced tanks at the end of the war, being cheaper to produce. That's the way the cookie crumbles I guess. Nice footage though, even if I suspect much of the older footage shows the guns in a too light color - German Grey was as close to black you can get without actually getting there, but then, tracked vehicles attract dust and dirt as if they were small children.
@AKUJIVALDO8 ай бұрын
Didn't "replaced tanks", Germany used what was available, and that includes StuGs. Also, StuGs crews weren't short lived. They actually had more survivability than tank crews as StuGs were usually employed from ambush positions mid-late war.
@Kojak08 ай бұрын
@@AKUJIVALDO for a time, up until the end of the war, tanks and assault guns were produced parallel to each other being from different branches, but towards the end of the war, more emphasis was made to build those assault guns since yes, they were cheaper and faster to build than tanks, which also meant they took positions in tank units that were originally meant for tanks. Regarding survivability, I'm well aware; just saying what the Germans said.

Nice to see so many of the original version with the short 75mm (useless against anything but very light tanks) doing what this SPG was originally intended to do, which was basically a mobile infantry gun for direct support of infantry assaults and able to take a frontal hit at combat range from most enemy anti-tank guns deployed at the time. It's often overshadowed by the much more prolific later models with the long 75mm which by that stage were almost exclusively employed as mobile anti-tank guns, desperately trying to fight off the vastly outnumbering enemy tanks on all fronts. Did you know that originally these were in organisation part of the German artillery, and thus crewed not by tankers nor by infantry, but by men hand-picked from the artillery?

Who ever had the idea for this fighting vehicle was a genius. It was developed as infantry support artillery. That’s why it had the 75mm short barrel for anti-personal high explosive shells. But these things were as low profiled as possible and that proved to be high effective in an anti tank role for what these vehicles were never intended. The low profile was used for camouflage reasons in the first place.
@thunderdan338 ай бұрын
It´s the same with the A-10 Thunderbolt II. This one was also created to support the infantry, was rejected by the air force, the StuG III was rejected by the tanker units at first. No support for the infantry was needed

Wonder. The short barrels allowed operations in forests. Long barrels would be bumped against trees or buildings in western towns.Thus lack of cross country mobility hindered German armor in the Ardennes II. You might image the crew concern over that inside the gun positions. The STUGs then more open on the steps. 151st Bison. HQ Burg Germany.

Also great for economy which was something that Germany desperately needed, much more than over-engineered Konigstigers or crazy projects like the Maus, being able to use both the existing tried and trusted Pz-III chassis and the whole production line/history/spare parts for them, which otherwise would have been useless as the Pz-III itself could not take a bigger turret than what could fit the 50mm gun.
@Ganiscol9 ай бұрын
@@Stripedbottom I for one am glad their system was geared towards failure like that with competing branches and Hitler constantly pitching his lackeys against each other because he thought that would breed success - ultimately, good for everybody who fought the nazis. This also didnt start with Tigers and Panthers or any of the other megalomanic projects but by abandoning Plan Z in order to build a fleet that could challenge Britain for sea supremacy and thus secure the routes for needed resources. Instead they wasted resources on just a couple capital ships like Bismarck and Tirpitz, which werent enough to achieve anything but could have been used to build tens of thousands of tanks. And again, these failures can be traced back to ole Adolf who didnt understand the importance of naval warfare nor had the wisdom to listen to those who did. Instead, he subsequently even ordered the completion of two battleships for prestige reasons... Nazis hubris, ignorance and infighting were our greatest allies in defeating them.

The Finns used c. 24 Stu-40 (StuG III) assault guns against the ussr. They achieved 87 knock-outs with 8 own losses. Some of the Finnish losses were not caused directly by the soviets, but by e.g. getting stuck or hitting own minefield. On the other hand a couple of damaged and recovered vehicles were later written of in the repair factory. AFAIK the Finnish StuG crews suffered total losses of 5 KIA/MIA and 7 WIA. The losses of the lost StuGs were 2 KIA/MIA and 5 WIA. The losses of the other StuGs (not lost) were 3 KIA and 2 WIA. Conclusion: - the survivability in StuG III was reasonably good - if seriously hit/destroyed by the enemy, the losses on average out of the crew of 4 were c. 1 KIA and 1 WIA
