Absolutely excellent videos (this one and the maintenance one). Manufacturers and dealers take note, flashy sweeping short videos are fine as intro to a product but this level of detail and practical is what's needed in times where getting to a show room that might not even have that model on the floor is what's needed for those of us that otherwise want to be touchy feely with the product before making a decision. The real world experience with the stove played a major factor in the helpfulness. I had to chuckle over the hidden cleaning tool (other video), as I'd have been the same way with how to orient it. Now I just have to hope this or a model like it will still be available and somewhat affordable when I buy or build my next house in a few years. Thank you again for the videos.

Thanks. Yes the outside air is one of the most complicated aspects. You can go above the floor, through a wall. But you need to be close to a wall.

If you can’t accommodate air intake, increase your chimney to 7” diameter. Or, install a barometric damper. It releases negative pressure and allows for a sufficient air flow

Thanks mostly due to your videos, we got ourself this stove, we got the H version, which has 150kg of heat storing stones. Only burned it once so far, cannot wait for colder weather. Talking about first burn, as with most newer stoves, it should be mentioned that the first burn bakes the paint. Even though the windows were open, it resulted in thick fog through the house. Thus do not open the windows, but open up everything you got, close the doors to adjacent rooms and wait for the follow up burns...

This is indeed an excellent video, as well as the other on maintenance. Thanks for providing them! I watched both before purchasing my 30-compact H with the heat accumulator. The odds are probably low, but on the off chance that someone else with the heat accumulator might see this...I've been dealing with a smell coming off of the pipe that goes up through the bricks and connects with the chimney above. I've been burning fires since December and it's not going away. I've tried troubleshooting it with the local fireplace store that sold and installed it. It took awhile to convince him that it was coming off the pipe and it wasn't the wood I was using. After talking to Stuv, he suggested I sand off the paint. I did my best to do so, but even with most of it off it still smells (I didn't remove it all after I noticed a fine coating of black paint dust was starting to cover everything in the room). Has anyone out there with the heat accumulator had the same issue? The smell is kind of "sweet", and it only comes off as the fire gets going. Once it's been burning for about half an hour it dissipates.

That's a very interesting stove. Not for everyone but I can see the appeal to something unique like this, especially for the type of homeowner who isn't afraid of some complicated operation. I'm curious if all those moving/sliding parts and the seals would still be any good after 5-10+ years. To my eye it looks more like an appliance than a wood stove, (lots of sheet metal parts instead of more traditional heavy welded metal or iron or stone), but everyone has a different taste/preference.
@dontscrewitup
@dontscrewitup 3 жыл бұрын
It is very well-designed in my opinion and is heavier than it looks. The stove weighs about 275 lbs. it all rotates on pins and bearings and is easily maintainable. I believe it will still operate like new in 10 years. And if not, all of the parts are replaceable and user-serviceable. If you watch my other video on how to clean and maintain the stove you can see more of the features as I disassemble most of the stove for cleaning.

Hi Tom, thanks for your comprehensive review of the Stuv 30 C. It was very informative. I've just had one installed in our new house build in Australia and can't wait to see it in action... and now feel much better prepared to operate it, as recommended. Quick question, if you don't mind? I've been away traveling during the instal (still not home) and haven't had a chance to look in the box for what comes with the fireplace. Does the firescreen that you showed come as a standard inclusion or did you have to purchase it separately? If the latter, do you mind letting me know where, please? I can't find any reference to the fire screen anywhere online. Thanks, Tom.

Very informative video, thank you Tom. I still do not know how to proceed for the chimney sweeping. On the guide book, they say we have to remove a small door at the entrance of the chimney, what I did. But I cannot put it back at the right place, with the proper connection to its command. Could you make it successfully?
@dontscrewitup
@dontscrewitup 10 ай бұрын
I have never removed that top chimney door myself. I use a chimney cleaning service and I’ve never seen how they’ve done it. The door is somehow connected to a mechanism in the main door of the unit, and if I recall, the main door needs to be in a certain position to get the chimney door back in place. For example, if the main door is open, I think you cannot get it back in place. You need to press a lever at the top of the main door to get the chimney door back in place. I’ll see if I can find the instructions. You could call the company and ask them. They have been very helpful in the past.

Thanks. Good question. I don’t think it would be very difficult. It is not attached to the floor. If the height of the floor changed, you may need to make a small adjustment to the chimney pipe, but there is a little margin for 1/4” or so without needing to cut or replace anything.

Thanks so much for the very helpful and informative video. I am planning on building a new home next spring (hopefully!) and am looking at this for the corner of the great room. I went to the Stuv dealer today and fortunately they had one on display. The "living" area part of this room will be about 13 feet wide before the 'dining room area' begins, with a depth of about 24 feet before getting in to the kitchen area, however the depth to the back of the sofa, will be about 16 feet...so essentially the sitting area will be about 12 feet wide by 15-16 feet long (with open concept dining and kitchen adjacent. Ceilings will go from 9 feet to a peak of a about 20 feet high. I am hoping that this stove will 'look' right in this space...I think it will, but I'd be curious to know what size room your installation is in. The salesman also showed me a brand called Rais, which is similar but just a glass door that opens, not the three versions that this has, and without the ash collections system of this. The one advantage is that they had gas or wood options, but I think I am pretty much sold on wood for this go-around. This is the second time I've watched this video, so thanks again for taking the time to put it together! It should be on Stuv's website! PK

Thanks for the feedback. Our Stuv is in the corner of an open concept room also. It is situated in the “sitting room” corner which is about 12 feet deep and 14 feet long. It throws off a lot of heat in that area. That corner is part of a 30x35 open plan room with kitchen, living room, dining room. If it runs all day it will warm up that entire space a few degrees, but the direct heating area is really the corner where the stove is. Our ceilings are 10 feet high. It is a big space. The way ours is situated in that corner it is more like a “room within a room” setup where it is not pointed toward the center of the great room, but toward an outside wall. Let me see if I can post a photo link.

Just came back and watched this a fourth time! My house is framed and it's time to make a decision. I'm torn between this and the Stuv 16-68 Cube style. Very clean looking with a huge glass door and twice the firebox size. My ceiling peaks out at 26 feet (20 feet above the stove). Your total 'open' room size of all your rooms is a square footage similar to mine, when I count the main great room area, foyer, dining area and kitchen. I am still tempted by the Stuv 30 because of its looks and features...just fearing it will get 'lost' a bit in the corner of my space. I unfortunately didn't come back to KZbin and see your photo, which is no longer available. Any chance you could post that again? It's decision time and I'm trying to get out of this paralysis! And thanks again for the fantastic video.

Hi, at 12:22 you mention you get your woodsman to cut 12-14 inches for sideways. Are you certain because the manufacturer indicates 11 inch for horizontal? 11 would be better than 12 inches if you want them to lay flat. The 12 inch cuts are on a slight angle.
@dontscrewitup
@dontscrewitup Жыл бұрын
I only lay a few logs flat to get it going, then I typically put them in more vertically. So my current batch of wood is more 13-14” with a handful of shorties. You can probably pack more wood in if they are all horizontal, but we burn it more for ambiance and near-field heat source. If I were burning overnight I’d probably stack it with horizontal shorties.

Your review convinced us to buy one. Love the stove, but the slow burn mode does not seem to work correctly. How long does the fire last for you when you put it in slow burn mode. I'll fill up with 3 or 4 logs, switch it to slow burn mode, and it will be completely out a few hours later. It's weird, as soon as I switch it to slow burn the fire really starts roaring which is opposite of what's it's supposed to do. You can hear the stove pipe heating up like crazy. And we struggle to get a good fire in window mode unless it's kiln dried wood. It's almost like the modes are reversed, but the sequence is the same that your video is showing. Any suggestions? Thanks
@dontscrewitup
@dontscrewitup 8 ай бұрын
Are you closing the damper slider for the slow burn? You want to minimize the air. Just enough to keep it burning. Mine will burn for about 6-8 hours in that mode. Just enough for warm embers in the morning.

Inside of firebox gets ash colored. Otherwise operating like new. Easy to clean, and very clean burning. Chimney is still like new. No creosote build up at all. We burn dry, seasoned hardwood. I out a small circulating fan behind it (4 inch pancake fan) on a variable speed controlled outlet. It really circulates the warm air on coldest days.

Yes. It is a very warm in close proximity, but does not throw off heat. However; with a small circulating fan, it heats our main living space, which is about 200 sq meters. We enjoyed your review and are likely to get one of these soon. We currently have a crude wood stove that does crank the heat out, but we find it very hard to modulate the temperature even with wood size and damper control. It also won't even come close to running through the night. So question one, can you really dial in the temperature with this stove, and two how long can it go over night if you stoke it up? Thanks!
@dontscrewitup
@dontscrewitup Жыл бұрын
Thank you. The capacity is not huge. If I really load it to the max with wood and turn the damper down all the way, it will just make it to morning with a few embers to relight the next fire. But it stops producing sufficient heat a few hours before morning. I can run a test for you next time I fire it up. We have high ceilings and the stove is in a large room so it’s hard to say exactly how this would translate to your situation. Our setup is probably the worst case for heat concentration and retention. It does put out a lot of heat when it is firing. I also have a very small circulating fan behind the stove that helps move air around the room. That makes a big difference too.

Thank you. Yes, for our application we are really using the stove for more ambience and near-field radiant heat while we are sitting in that area near the stove. If we were trying to heat our home or a larger space we would have considered the tall model with the firebricks (Stuv 30 Compact H) We also wanted a very small model that is somewhat out of sight in that corner. And lastly, with the stone work behind the stove and the small required clearance, the stone wall actually heats up and stores some heat also. Good question, thanks for asking.

Thanks for the excellent review! We are in the process of building our house with this in the center of our living room/kitchen. Do you believe the 360 degree capability is still feasible with the Stuv 30-H Accumulation (an extra 150KG). The weight on the floor is not an issue as it will be a concrete slab.
@dontscrewitup
@dontscrewitup 2 жыл бұрын
If you are on a concrete slab you need to figure out where your outside combustion air would come in from. Normally it comes through a hole in the floor via a duct running through a basement or crawl space to the outside. Not sure the stove will work on a slab. Check with a Stuv installer or the manufacturer. There may be some other solution I am not aware of. If you haven’t poured the slab yet, you can run an air intake duct under the slab. Consult with your builder on the best way to do this.

Ok good. I’ve not installed that model, but the specifications look the same for the 360-degree rotation feature. I don’t see any reason it would not work if it’s designed to do it. The rotation mechanism looks the same as the one on the smaller model. It is a ball bearing collar which rotates very smoothly under the weight of the stove. It may be best to confirm with Stuv, but based on what I’m seeing it seems like the 360-rotation is a feature of the 30-H model. www.stuv.com/sites/default/files/fiches_30h_btob_220113_en.pdf

We will be installing on a flat wall between the living and the dining area,so I'm wondering if I would need to rotate the fire box towards one or the other. The fire box is sitting on a concrete slab at ground level with a ceramic tile covering,so the air vent would need to be inslab and turned up above ground level on the outside.Any thoughts?Thanks again and greetings from Down Under.
@dontscrewitup
@dontscrewitup 4 жыл бұрын
That is correct. If the outside air comes on through the wall, it does not rotate. When mounting it against a wall, I don’t think you lose much by not rotating. The real benefit of the stove’s rotating feature is really for, free-standing installations in the center of an open room, for example.

Just bought the stuv 30. A few question: 1) did the screen come with the stove for open mode? Or was it a optioal accessory? 2) did you get the floor place included? Or was it an option as well? 3) where did you find (or what is it call) the air inlet flow control valve? I love hpw.you can control it on the floor and not go outside to shut of the fresh air. I bought mine as the display model, so I want to know if I'm missing parts. Haven't got it hooked up yet. Thanks in advance loved your review!!

Thanks! All of those items are extra Stuv accessories you can buy from your Stuv dealer. There are many different floor covers based on the configuration (if you plan to rotate the stove you need different shapes). Download the Stuv manual and dealer accessory catalog for all the possible parts. There is also a grill attachment, wood rack, etc. Also buy a can of Stuv gray paint. The unit may get scratched and the factory paint covers perfectly.

Here are the accessories. There is a more detailed version of this with sizes and specs. You may need to get that from a dealer. All of the accessories are a bit pricey, but are good quality. wp.stuvamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/stuv30-en-2.pdf

I don’t know. It would be best to check with a Stuv dealer on that question.

@@dontscrewitup - Sorry for my English. I was talking about the removable screen that we see at 3:00 ;) Thanks

That is an optional part you can buy from Stuv with the stove. It is essential for the open burning mode if you plan to use that method. I guess some people don’t use that mode and that is why the screen is optional.

What is the price of it

You’ll need to check with a local dealer. They don’t publish the prices. The prices have gone up significantly since we bought ours. I believe we paid about $4,000 USD plus more for some of the accessories (screen, mat, outside air intake, etc.). If you have a dealer near you, also inquire about discounts on display models, or off-season pricing.

How does this compare to a hearthstone Bari?
@dontscrewitup
@dontscrewitup 2 жыл бұрын
It looks very similar. I just read the webpage, have not seen one, but the Stuv has three different rotating doors inside the unit. It can burn with glass door, steel door, or open burn, and you can rotate them while the stove is burning. That is the main difference I see. The Bari also comes in ceramic sheathing. Stuv is steel only. I'd need to research it in more detail to provide more info, but the other specs look pretty similar.

SEE THE PICTURES ON MY GOOGLE REVIEW Stuv 30 Compact Problems: 1) Glass blackens very quickly (even with extremely low moisture briquettes), so you have no chance of seeing the logs through the glass, only the flames. 2) The baffle gets stuck as it relies on gravity to open, so will not overcome the friction of a bit of soot or corrosion. This means when you open the door to add logs you will get a lot of fumes/smoke in your room, which will set off your smoke detector etc. 3) The whole device has warped so the door at the bottom does not close properly (hinges are fine) and sometimes will not close at all. 4) The metal back plate at the back of the area the wood burns in has cracked.

@@dontscrewitup Seems like @jackBoult was more of a disgruntled competitor and not a real owner. His points worry me though.

@@Simple_Citoyen I have used my Stuv now for years, and burned at very high temperatures, and have not seen any of these issues. The unit is still like new. Almost all of the things he is describing can be caused by burning non-recommended combustibles in the stove. You should only burn seasoned, low-moisture hardwoods. Burning soft woods or other inappropriate materials can cause excessive soot and extreme heat which could theoretically cause such issues. The stove also requires (fairly minimal) cleaning and maintenance. Check out my other video on how to clean and maintain the unit and you’ll see how easy it is to do it.
