Something To Wrestle With Bruce Prichard

Something To Wrestle With Bruce Prichard

5 жыл бұрын

On this episode: We are one year removed from the Montreal Screwjob and the tide has turned in the Monday Night War--the WWF is near clearly in the lead with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin feuding with "Mr. McMahon." But the story of Survivor Series 1998 is about to further the lead that the WWF has when they crown their "next big thing" champion. The Rock became "the guy" at Survivor Series '98 but HOW they got there was the most masterful part of the story. Vince Russo has said this was the best thing he ever wrote in wrestling and most agree. The story of Mankind and Vince McMahon, weaving in Shane McMahon and the Rock for weeks before the big reveal... the Rock is the Chairman's hand picked Champion. The stage was set for WrestleMania 15 and what would become the biggest trilogy in the history of professional wrestling. Don't miss the incredible story that made the Rock one of the youngest WWE Champions ever as Bruce and Conrad discuss Survivor Series 1998!
Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard is an audio podcast that discusses topics, events, wrestlers and memorable moments through the lens of former WWE executive Bruce Prichard co-hosted by Conrad Thompson.
The show was launched in August 2016 on MLW Radio. The episodes typically range from 2 hours to 4 hours in length, and include discussions about previous WWE pay-per-views and former WWE wrestlers.

Sometimes I would watch it scrambled because at least that way it was like listening to the ppv on radio lol does anyone else remember doing that? It's funny, Bruce says Vince hates tournaments (which I believe) and they had to sell him on this one, but it's the 5th tournament the WWF had done in 11 months: - Light heavyweight title tournament (December 1997) - King of the Ring (June 1998) - Brawl for All (Summer 1998) - IC title tournament (October 1998) - WWF title tournament (November 1998)

Okay guys hear me out: Honestly guys I wish there was a way we could talk about survivor series 2003. I know y’all like to do anniversaries on this show but the 15th anniversary of survivor series to me is just as good of a topic as 1998. This episode is gonna be good the whole story about rock/Austin/Mankind/Vince will be good. I know there’s a 80-90’s bias and I understand that. But we’ve got enough episodes about pay per views from that time line for ages. Survivor Series 2003 has some fun stuff that I think we’d like to know. Examples: Kane/Shane and all the stuff that went into that storyline would’ve been comedy gold. Vince/Taker buried alive we could’ve talked about how it was takers swan song with that gimmick and we could’ve heard some behind the scenes from that. People would’ve loved that! We could talk about team Eric vs team Steve. It would’ve been a great story. I understand the 80s-90s bias you guys have and I’m not knocking you for it. I love you’re content and I’m sure this episode is gonna be good. But my point is I’m not sure if it’s because I’m in my early 20s and I look forward to hearing about modern stuff. But my point is this I feel like there is some stuff post 2000 to 2008 you guys aren’t hitting on. I love all your episodes and I love all your wrestler bios. But I feel most pay per view episodes are from the 90’s. Some of my favorites episodes ever from this show are: Survivor Series 2002. (That’s my favorite) WrestleMania 19, Bad Blood 2003, heck even unforgiven 2008 was good. I wish we’d get more stuff from the year 2006 I’d give a lot to hear about stuff that happened that year. But more than anything please don’t hesitate to talk about all the awesome stuff that happens in 2004 next year. We wanna hear no way out 2004 and I’m so glad you said you were gonna do it. But we wanna hear about wrestlemania 20 we wanna hear Great American Bash 2004, Judgement Day 2004. Just to name a few. Just a friendly (long) reminder that there’s good stuff post 90s wrestling.

Here is the thing with the Survivor Series Team Matches They worked great in the early days of the event. In an era where we had TV filled up with mostly squash matches, the Team battles were a way to get top stars working with and against each other and continue feuds without giving the big match away too soon. For example, in 1987 we had Team Hogan Vs. Team Andre which was a way of hyping that Hogan/Andre would be in the same ring together, but it doesn't quite give away the big rematch that would be saved for the next year. Fast forward to today, in an era with 3 hours Raws, 2 hour Smackdowns, and more content than any normal human being could be expected to follow, we see top stars work with and against each other all the freaking time, so the novelty is completely gone. Back in 89, I'd be like "Oh I get to see Hogan and Jake team against DiBiase! Cool!". If they were around today, Hogan and Jake would be teaming on TV almost every week leading into the PPV, probably against DiBiase in some matches, so by the time you get to Survivor Series, its like "Meh, I've seen it". The only way these matches can work today is if there is some big stipulation attached to it (like the match with The Authority's power on the line a couple years back). And I'll be honest. I don't give two shits about a Raw Vs. SD feud because neither brand gets anything anyway, so it just feels like WWE's equivalent to the pro bowl. Now, if they wanted to do Raw Vs. SD with the winning brand getting, let say, the last 10 spots in the Royal Rumble, the next year's MITB match, or something like that, then it adds a bit more fuel to the fire.

Bit of a late reply here but those are some good suggestions Patrick. I remember the authority match at the survivor series combined with Sting's debut being the last time I really enjoyed a survivor series match, shame too because of the big 4 PPVs in the WWE, Survivor Series has always been my favourite as I've always been a big fan of elimination and iron man types matches as well as the theme of the PPV being to "survive" which has always appealed to me personally. I hate the way the show gets treated as an afterthought and would love for it to become a meaningful big 4 show again like it use to be. On a somewhat off topic point, I think the theme song for Survivor Series 98 and the set design and graphics with the skull entrance way and the skull poster and the various other bits like the fire, the snake etc will always be one of my favourites, absolute love it. Another honourable mention that just came to mind would be Fully Loaded 2000 with the casino theme, I've always thought that looked really good as well. Maybe it is just because I've done a bit of graphic design and animation in the past in college so that's why I enjoy it but I do miss when they use to have unique stage designs and graphics for the different shows especially with the PPVs, it always made it feel more special to me and I wish they would do it more often.

Conrad tries to get the subject changed when Bruce or anyone else starts in on Meltzer, because it's actually hurt Dave's feelings. That's a little peak behind the curtain. They did try to do too much on this card. The story with Rock turning and joining the corportation was done really well. I have to give Vince Russo (the devil credit) that was done really well. I am surprised that Vince didnt go to cable companies and not get an extra hour for the show. 3 hours and 14 matches on the ppv card was too much. There were chemistry issues for sure. No wonder cause there wasnt much time for each match. I can understand them doing Sable vs Jacqueline. There was a story there. That match was good for what it was. I hated the triple threat for the WWE Tag Team Championship. Felt like that was done mainly cause of the fact that Rock needed time to breath after his match with Undertaker. I am very surprised that they didnt do the first round on Raw starting after Judgment Day. Most of those first matches were un necessary. Not crapping on the show. It was that Vince was trying to do too much and you could tell there were problems on the show and they weren't hidden very well.

Bischoff lies about so much. Saying he never offered Bret a contract in '96 first, which was proven to be a lie. He also said Ric Flair had little to do with Hogan coming to WCW yet on the Monday Night Wars Bischoff called Flair instrumental to WCW landing Hogan. Those are just 2 examples but both are pretty big lies. Bischoff recalls history differently based on who he's talking to and who he's talking about.

"There's no real wrestling matches on this show." -The Attitude Era.
@raysoyars2905
@raysoyars2905 5 жыл бұрын
actual real wrestling kinda went on "hiatus" for about 8 yrs during the attitude era, chairs, ladders, bikinis, heels, cameras, monitors, tables, stairs, vehicles, symbols, books, clip boards, laptops, sledge hammers, kendo sticks, garbage cans, dumpsters, barbed wire, tacks, cages, dogs, bats, tennis rackets, etc gimmicks, but no real serious 1, 2, 3, in the center of the ring. And I loved every minute of it! especially all the bra and panty matches, well the Brisco/Patterson one not so much, but all the ladies...oooh yeeeeaaah!

Everything ended in a DQ in both WWE and wcw big matches always ended in countouts or DQs I never noticed when I was younger watching bit after hearing Conrad list off programs between guys and I watched some WCW recently in the NWO era and fucking every match ended in a big brawl with a bunch of guys running to the ring and just brawling ....

I"m a life-long wrestling fan and I watched both WWF and WCW during the Attitude Era, though I would have considered myself more an ECW fan at the time. I'm not saying there was no value to any of it, but let's face it, the reason the Attitude Era was the most popular era, (arguably, I suppose) was that it appealed to the lowest common denominator. It was mostly trash television. You can keep your biddies slapping eachother and tearing eachother's clothes off and your bikini contests... I'll take real women having real wrestling matches any day.

@fuzzydunlop7928
@fuzzydunlop7928 5 жыл бұрын
@Bryan Mack From my research-related fumblings, Russo was taken on to a job that was basically "stay home, collect a paycheck, and don't fuck around or spill the beans" - which is exactly what happens in those scenarios. The mole gets a guaranteed paycheck for YEARS, if not life, in exchange for their silence - but they wont be anywhere near doing the same job they did when they were a mole in the first place. That's just asking for trouble. Russo didn't like his position, wanted to write, so he left to go ruin TNA some.

@@sabercrosby8128at WCW Russo had no control...literally had Wrestlers with Creative Control telling him That Doesnt Work For Me Brother...he also had a budget cut in half, AOL in meetings not knowin what night Nitro is on, Standards & Practises in meetings makin the product PG, Wrestlers pretending to be injured to not wrestle on Thunder or House shows, and then Eric came back and was literally there for a paycheck...Russo had no chance, destined for failure

I don't appreciate putting the blame on Bossman. The dude's been "on" the entire evening and being such a big part of the event throughout the entire night. I mean, there are Pat, Brisco, Vince, and Shane all capable of doing whatever to Austin. Sure it was Bossman's spot and it was supposed to lead to an Austin/Bossman feud, but the dude was going out so often in the night, can you blame him for forgetting one fucking spot!? Sure, of all the spots to fuck up that was probably the biggest, but as Conrad said "he might as well just stayed out there all night." What, couldn't have Patterson hit Austin with a pipe or something? Shane refusing to count for Austin, distracting him enough for a roll-up by Foley which is followed by a quick count by Shane? Like that shit's not enough? Austin could still chase after Shane and they could still do the chase afterwards. All without relying on one guy who's already been involved in more matches than anyone else in the tournament.
@cborusty3316
@cborusty3316 2 жыл бұрын
For a veteran at the time like Bossman was it was an inexcusable mistake, especially considering it was Shane's first time in big spot and he was able to hold his composure and didnt miss a spot all night. Furthermore, since Bossman already beat up Steve earlier in night it made sense if he came out and screwed him to further the feud. It wouldnt make sense for a stooge or Vince to be able to knock out Steve (which is why weak chair shot from briscl was a lame finish) since theyre non wrestlers and for months Steve had been able to handle all them while still coming out on top. They had been intefering in ppv matches vs Foley and others all year and Steve still would keep belt and/or stun them all. Storyline wise bossman was brought in to screw Steve and protect vince from steve.
