Something To Wrestle With Bruce Prichard

On this episode: Nobody has a story like Jake Roberts. His family life has become somewhat of an urban legend in wrestling so Bruce and Conrad address the rumor and innuendo surrounding Grizzly Smith. They also detail Jake's rise in the business outside of the WWF, how the character was developed, Jake's interest in booking, his unique promo style, the DDT on the floor that took Steamboat out of commission, why the Hogan feud never happened, who created the DDT, how to properly take it, protecting a finisher, why people cheered for Jake, the silly song Bruce and Jake wanted to create for the DDT, how Honky Tonk Man gets blamed for Jake's addiction issues, how Pat Patterson's partner may share some of the blame, Jake's stints in rehab, why his wife Cheryl was on the road, his feud with Rick Rude, the silly Harlem rats that Bad News found, Earthquake squashing the snake, turning heel, the silly Warrior vignettes, who shot the snake-in-a-box wedding surprise, how Jake convinced Savage to let the snake bite him, getting Randy out of retirement, cocaine testing in the WWF, how Vince reacted to the Duggan-Shiek arrests, a tidbit about bringing Snuka back after he lost a civil suit for murdering his girlfriend, feuding with the Undertaker, the misstep of going to WCW and what went wrong, how Jake came back in 1996 to huge reactions, who thought Jake was just working a religious gimmick, who Jake pushed creatively, how Jake joined the writing team, Jake relapsing, how Jake was fired, when Bruce saw Jake again, and the happy ending that no one expected for Jake. "Trust Me" this is a monster of an episode!

Jake the Snake in my opinion is one of the best there has ever been. His story is one worth listening to. I met him back in August in Pikeville KY at a comic con. He signed my Jake the Snake Roberts Mattel Elite figure. Meeting him was a bucket list moment. He was very kind. It was an honor. I scored some other figures too. Mean Mark Callous and Braun Strowman. Right now on WWE2K22 Jake is holding the title. Lol I suffer from abuse that my stepmother put on me as a child. Jake's story really helped me towards dealing with it. Thanks Jake!

Here's how it went down: Originally, The Road Warriors were a member of a faction known as "The Legion of Doom"... A name stolen from the old school "Superfriends" cartoon show. ( It included The Road Warriors, Jake Roberts and a wrestler called The Spoiler"). I believe they were in the A.W.A, I'll have to re-research that. Anyway, everyone except "The Warriors" left the promotion and the Road Warriors were left with the moniker. End of story

Jake has talked about the Steamboat SNME DDT on many podcast interviews. It was booker George Scott's idea. Jake was TOTALLY AGAINST IT. Steamboat was ok with it. Jake insisted it NOT be done because their on concrete floor and because how fast he delivers the DDT he is VERY CONCERNED for steamboat's safety, But both Steamboat and George Scott push for it. When Jake delivers and a bad thump sound occurs. Its realized Steamboat was KNOCKED OUT COLD! Jake dead body weight drags steamboat into the ring and covers for the pin BUT also points to George Scott and mouths "this is your doing!"
@datacipher
@datacipher Жыл бұрын
Lol. I can’t believe people still fall for that kayfabe even today. Even Conrad pretending too. Steamboat took that HARD and is rhe best seller of all time - he wasn’t knocked out at all. Look at his foot after. Look at the way he looks limp in the arms but is stiff enough for Robert’s to easily lift him back into the ring. You really think a knocked put guy’a whole upper body lifts so easily when you grab the back of his hair and reef it up? …and by the way, you should try actually watching the incident before giving a BS opinion. Mouthing to George Scott while covering for the pin lol!!!! Newsflash: there was no pin.

As someone who owns an anaconda and four boa constrictors, there are millions of people who absolutely love snakes. I live in Georgia and just in my county alone I know of 30 people who own anacondas. That's just my county and just anacondas and just people I know of. A lot of people don't like snakes and I totally respect their opinion but killing snakes is just as bad as killing dogs. Whether you like to think so or not. Look at down in Florida where some guy had some snakes that were no longer illegal, he got rid of as many as he could but they were going to euthanize the rest. They ended up euthanizing snakes that he had that were not illegal. Now keep in mind he wasn't housing them illegally, he had them all when they were legal and then they changed the law and he couldn't get rid of them all in time. He asked for an extension and they said no. So not only did they not euthanize the animals humanely, they shot them with a nail gun but they also killed his animals that he was allowed to have and now they are facing a massive lawsuit.

I don't agree that the reason the crowd popped for Jake and the DDT because people wanted to see Damian. Yes everyone wanted to see the snake but the truth is that eventually got to be kinda run of the mill but everyone still loved Jake and the fact is the DDT was THE most over move in the 80s. The snake certainly helped but Jake made that work... If Brutus Beefcake had come out with the snake sure it woulda been popular but Jake WAS the snake.

As horrible as the snake squishing was damn it WAS good to be a kid back them. To just BELIEVE was great. Not like today where they walk out like 'hey kids its all fake, enjoy the show'.

Yeah I remember the snake v the quake and quake squashing Damien like it was yesterday! Sights like that on tv back then didn't happen, so that was nuts in itself. But the acting was amazing in the segment, even now. That and the model blinding Jake were 2 of the best angles ever!

@@Nicholas_Logan yeah, but in the moment, especially for a little kid, was very real. But that's the absolute beauty of kayfabe. Of course now that couldn't be done period just because peta would shit themselves. But that was part of the job to PROTECT the story! You don't break kayfabe. Period.

In fairness to the time it appears a lot of men married young women in the 50s. Although it was met with scandal even back then unless you were very young yourself.

That guitar shot was B-Rutal. The DDT to Steamboat on the floor was nasty also. At first, it looks like Ricky deserves an award for his acting. Later on u find out it was REAL and that guy could've been killed...

It's funny looking back at the first batch of STW episodes and how they were only about an hour, hour and a half, 2 hours tops vs. this one @ almost 4 friggin hours! Not that I'm complaining b/c I'm a classic wrestling junkie but if you're a casual fan I can see you being turned off by something this long. Something like the new Sean Mooney podcasts which are clocking in under 2 hours in most cases might be a better length.
@rampageclover9788
@rampageclover9788 6 жыл бұрын
Difference is Mooney actually talked to a lot of guys even if it’s only for 20 minutes (which isn’t enough). Prichard just rants about them for 4 hours, interjecting himself whenever he can into the anecdotes and assumes he's interesting to listen to...chances are most who have clicked on this video genuinely thought they were gonna get an in depth interview with Jake...

With 30,000+ subs I think most clicking would have followed the STW podcast long enough to know the layout of the show.

@@betterthansex123 Grave wax is right... i heard Jake say it in an interview recently, Jake says he was in a hotel and reading the news paper and saw a headline (early-mid 80s) talking about a chemical "DDT" killing people. So he decided to use that name for the finisher

Every person would do the same thing Hogan did if they got the chance. Even Savage, who was very giving in the ring, held the belt a year and would have longer if Hogan stayed in movies. And Jake would have been no different. Remember that the T-Shirts sold like hot cakes
