In this segment of the Style POV podcast, I interview listeners on their personal style journeys. In the very first episode of the "style files" segment I speak with Makhosi. She discusses her style journey, what style systems she used, and what style hurdles she faced. Ultimately finding her style home in the oracle and goddess style and pondering what that style might look like running errands.

I so relate to what she said about ethnicity and the style systems. Minority ethnicities are so often typed as natural. I think it’s that actually many (particularly White people) are so blind to nuance in other groups and their unconscious biases of other minorities plays such a big part. As a middle eastern, Hispanic woman, I was often typed as natural and dramatic because people perceive me as having strong features but when I compare myself to my family members - I grew up wishing I had their strong feature and it took me so long to accept my moderate features. So yes I think I have natural and dramatic (and romantic) but I’ve learned it’s moderated by classic - which I think is the type that is most unconsciously associated with more whiteness bc unconsciously we learn that Whiteness is the standard which we then associate as being balanced or classic.

Makhosi, your mannerisms, voice and expressions say more about your essence than a still photograph. If i just looked at a photograph I would think you would be a pure Romantic. But in seeing you in action Ethereal is far more apparent. Your measured exacting serene way of communicating tells a different story.

So true! As a women of color, sometimes the journey can look different because there’s structural traits that need to be adjusted for. These systems, especially when they were created, really centered around European features, I believe. I loved hearing about her journey and is really helpful. 🤍 Again, both these looks are great! Love the earrings.

This is so interesting and relatable. I’m a fellow dark-eyed Summer with a lot of ethereal essence. I have had Mermaid and Selkie (seal person) comparisons all my life, especially now that I live on an Island and swim in the sea regularly. So that was the easiest part of my essence to find. I related so much to Mrs Makhosi’s style preferences and the challenge to having an ethereal essence in the everyday routines of life. I am much older and live a very reclusive lifestyle by choice. Soft is my dominant characteristic but I live in a rural community surrounded by corn fields and where the fashion is jeans and tee shirts or sweatshirts, it’s challenging so I have pretty much adopted a loungewear attitude. 😢

Great conversation, thank you both! ❤ I feel like Makhosi is my style sister. 😂 I am also a soft summer leaning dark with ethereal-classic essence. Patterns are only possible on skirts and only if they are not too prominent. And I have a trick on how to wear pure linen with these features: The very high quality linen that is soft and flowy works well in bright colors. I have some white linen shirts and beige linen pants and I look very good in them. Cotton t-shirts work only when they are delicate and on the tighter side. But my merino t's look great in both short and longsleeved versions. ❤✨️

What a great guest. And I find her very relatable, on a personal level. I was excited as she began to describe the point that she started to hone in on her style. I also feel I am ethereal and romantic mixed with either dramatic or classic... I relate to everything she says about what looks good on her. I look much better in anything antique or ancient, in costume looks and fairy-princess dresses, and have even also found tunic tops to work best for me... I pretty much only look good in delicate lace-up granny boots. No jeans for me either! And I also find her struggle to remove the armour and be as soft and yin as she really is very relatable. Also, being called a granny, haha.

This was such a joy to listen to. You ladies are both so wonderful! I feel like I may have to explore the ethereal essence. Due to my close set eyes and high contrast level, I ruled it out. Yet I relate very strongly to being an old soul or grandmother and also have an intense calmness. I also thought it to be a sign of weakness, but there is something so powerful about walking through a storm and not getting swept up into it. I recently attended a wedding and recieved many compliments on my (unintended) greek godess look.

@@Gabriellearrudadesign Not very cold weather; I should have specified. 😊 Merino can be worn in any weather, even hot! Because it regulates temperature, breathes, and handles ambient moisture very well. But it can have a lovely winter vibe. Something like a light to medium weight draped or wrapped top would be perfect for FL winters. Just a very elevated long sleeve.

This is so cool for me to learn about! I’m a definite SD myself (any amount of diva chic just blends right in with me), and a lot of my friends are SN, so I’m familiar with that type too. But while watching this video, I kept thinking “huh, she doesn’t quite fit either of those ID’s, but she also has too much ‘presence’ to be gamine or romantic, I think… so ?” It’s like the rest of us forget that the Classic family exists! She’s a good example of it

This was so helpful! I really appreciate the depth and complexity of this conversation. I really relate to challenges in the style space for BIPOC people--especially around essence. I've had a similar journey with etherial essence where examples tend to be pale and willowy. .

It is a challenge indeed! I do not fit the idea of "moderate height" in Kibbe terms. But when I see myself in public, I am both taller and shorter than many people and there are many people much narrower than me - i.e. I am actually moderate/average height and build in my country. So it's difficult to tell if I have Kibbe petite, or if I'm within Classic because both have tailored fit as their recommendations. I've mostly settled in soft gamine but I still have moments where I question if I'm actually a soft classic. Oh well, hahaha!

I think a lot of people get thrown off by "soft" as a descriptor for colors. Any blended color is technically soft (muted) to some degree. There *are* soft *dark* colors so if you are soft AND Dramatic, it's not contradictory in my mind at least. Depending on whether the hue was softened by grey, brown or a complementary hue will determine how coollish/warmish the color looks. Soft colors aren't automatically cool with a capital C, but they are cooler in comparison to a more saturated hue. I see this in eyeshadow palettes all the time. People or the manufacturer describing a palette as cool when it's not, it's just desaturated warm colors.

I’m a soft summer, Angelic/Ethereal essence - only recently realised. I can so relate to what much of you said. I’m a 60 yo, white woman, with white/grey, long curly hair. Ethereal’s have great strength. Our strength is quiet, calm, measured… most of the time but I think we just express rage in a very different way to most. Thank you Gabrielle and Makhosi. This is sooooo interesting and reflects my problem with the world so much 😂 the way I dress doesn’t reflect my soft, „ethereal“ inner self, that people cannot put me in the box they expected and get confused. I always thought I was dramatic, natural, gamine (also because my Kibbe ID is dramatic), but in reality, oversized makes me drown, dramatic can feel to heavy and restricted. I never thought ethereal could be an option, because my face doesn’t look like the „celebrity examples“.

I was ready by about 22:00 to lock in a guess of SC for her Kibbe ID and I WILL NOT be swayed 😋 She's more delicate in the nose and jaw than a lot of SDs, her vibe SCREAMS Graceful Lady, and ruling out SC bc she has locs feels closed-minded to me. So idk do whatever with THAT lol. 2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the implication she made that we're all telling on ourselves on Halloween 🤔 Going to obsess on this well into November kbye. 3. I def need to talk about my style but prob with a therapist instead 🤣 Tl;dr My gut instinct is dynamite, my loved ones are NOT good at this, and Kitchener might have two missing essences. 1:02:22 oh I felt that! Flamgam here and the kibbe recommendations technically fit my body, but it doesn’t fit me. Have natural, ethereal, & romantic in my blend so…those super cute stiffer lines & piping & super gamine elements look amazing on some other flamgams, but I feel lost. Think I look great in sort of “elegant bohemian” (especially dresses) which means maybe there is sharpness in the neckline & it has wide smocking around the midsection, but then flowy sleeves & skirt portion (shortened to show my ankles) & then let my wavy/curly hair flow freely & look kind of wild & messy. Then I like to add a cool chunky shoe or boots. There is something about that pull towards certain looks that I think hints at your essence blend.

Also, sometimes total strangers can offer interesting insight since they are experiencing you for the first time. Lol once I attended a retreat & towards the end someone brought up Kibbe. When you talked about your tension between the edgier aspects and leaning into your ethereal essence resonated with me personally so much. I think the essences are mistakenly shown on a linear spectrum. I now think it’s a circle. That ethereal and dramatic aren’t actually opposites… (hyper fem and then masculine energy). I think you and I might straddle where they connect again in essence? Just a thought that came up when listening to you. Thank you both for your creativity and sharing! 💜

I don't think there's one right answer to this. I would also suggest you create a keyword list of items that you find work for you that are ethereal and then try to expand to their cold weather alternative. For instance soft draped silks might transition to soft light velvets that still allow for draping (not too heavy). Soft silk jerseys might translate to angora knits that are plush and delicate. But those initial keywords that you resonate will be helpful, I know kitchener also recommends like fur trimmed boots and I think some interesting cuts could also work leaning more toward the issey miyake side of the spectrum

I had the OG CMB book by Carol Jackson & I thought I was an Autumn since the Spring examples were always very blonde with blue or green eyes. The lady analyzed me as an Autumn as well. Fast forward several years & I had the money to get professinally color analyzed (not CMB) & I was classified as a Warm Golden Spring & given 40 something color swatches. That felt much more "me" & was kind of a combo of the Autumn & Spring palette. Most of the shades were medium value & medium saturation except for my yellows (no mustard) I had intuitively been drawn to most of the colors that suited me (except black which I still wear since finding Spring colors isn't always easy) & very much aligned with what my mom & other people complimented me on when I wore them. Both my mom & grandma were typed as Winter (this was before the 12 & 16 sub category system) The biggest challenge is not buying colors that are too soft, especially when purchasing online since photography often distorts color. Red *is* in my palette but it's the biggest challenge for me to wear since I prefer more wine/berry shades of red over tomato or poppy & I'm not a red lipstick kinda girl.

Try Dressing Your Truth and solve all your problems. I ditched seasons as they don't work for me, but I still use SN from Kibbe system and Essences to spice things up. She nailed it, but DYT is the shortcut.

I like it, too. It’s a different approach. I learned a lot about myself practicing it. The guest seems like T1s2. What do you think?

What’s the answer to what does a goddess wear to run errands?
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign Ай бұрын
Well for Makhosi that's her next style extension that she will be exploring. I would suggest for a person who wanted to know "what a goddess would wear" to start with defining what amounts of "goddess-ness" you need in an outfit and integrating details, softer fabrics, and details like bell sleeves, diagonal hems, with more casual pieces. A pair of leggings in a soft muted tone with a draped diagonal hem or ruched top with some ethereal jewelry right be the perfect fit. But there's no "one outfit" fits all.
