I'm taking my beginner's course in Field Archery in just under two weeks. Looking forward to it. I've been wanting to get back into archery since I first tried it at 11 years old when my family joined a local target archery club, but it's only now, 31 years later, that I'm finally getting that chance. So now I'm binge-watching all of your videos!

Thanks for the informative videos. I bought a re curve at a garage sale with VERY little experience. With the help of your and some other videos I have made it one of my favorite new pastimes and have introduced my niece , nephew and brother-in law to shooting bows they love it , Who knew :). Before this it was firearms trap and range. I find shooting the bow much more relaxing and sort of therapeutic . Thank You for your help :)

One style I'm curious about is the hats that many Olympic-style archers wear. It's like a Gilligan hat. ^_^
@NUSensei11 жыл бұрын
It's a bucket hat. You can find it in most outdoor stores. Many archers prefer it because a cap interferes with the draw.

Hey NUSensei - could you perhaps make a video, showing the different bow styles as well, maybe review a traditional hunting bow, an English longbow and the American flat bow? Keep those brilliant videos coming mate! I'd rather see this coming from you and not some hill billy in the woods with his 'stick bow' - what's that anyway? As kids we used to make bows out of broom handles and shoot toilet plungers at each other - a category on it's own ;o)
@johnjriggsarchery24578 жыл бұрын
It's funny how they are called "American Flat Bows", because what people think of the American Longbow or Flatbow was made in similar forms in ancient Europe... Holmgaard, Stellmore, and even the Mollegabet had flattish limbs. The proper English Longbow that we see today, following the strict guidelines of width vs thickness with that perfectly round belly is a Victorian aged form and derived from the yew bows. Bows made from white woods couldn't follow the same designs of a yew bow because the wood couldn't take the compression loads. That is exactly why heavy bows not made of yew are all laminated, combining woods with different attributes in order to create a "super wood". Even the Wych Elm Welsh Longbow probably resembled a Black Locust Cherokee Longbow more than it resembled than a Yew English Longbow simply because of the physical properties of the wood... Wych Elm can't take that thick D cross section in a heavy draw bow without suffering compression failure or extreme string follow. And not all primitive archers are "Hillbillys in the woods with stickbows". That's actually pretty insulting coming from someone who doesn't know much about bows.

Thanks NuSensei can you make a video on arrow stiffness and how to adjust or tune your bow/arrows for different distances?
@NUSensei11 жыл бұрын
I have already made a video on bare shaft tuning (in fact, two). I'm not sure what you mean by tuning for "different distances". You wouldn't tune a bow to shoot differently at 30m compared to 70m.

I been doing some research into buying a bow and I have been through some of your videos and I like to eventually start using a traditional long bow so my question is should I begin with one of those entry level takedown recurves and learn from that then go into the traditional long bow or should I starting learning with the traditional longbow?
@johnjriggsarchery24578 жыл бұрын
If your goal is to use a traditional longbow, start off with a traditional longbow. A good place to find out about different makes and models, pick up a copy of Traditional Bow Hunter magazine, or if you wish to go a step further, pick up a copy of Primitive Archer. There are also Trad and Primitive archery forums. People seem to think Samick is the be all and end all of Trad bows, but it isn't. There is a wide World of people out there building amazing equipment of all ilks. Well built bows will also last a long time so consider spending as much as you can afford to get something that you will like, and will last.

I've been in the bow market for a month or so now, and I got into your channel earlier today so I'm a newcomer and have not seen all your videos just yet, so I'm sorry if this has been asked or if you've made a video on it. I do a lot of hiking and/or camping outdoors and was considering a collapsible bow (i.e. Primal Gear Unlimited or Survival Archery Systems). I'm not sure how seriously I want to take archery, but I wanted something I can easily pack on camps and bring to the woods to just shoot for... fun? (if that's the right word). Anyways, in short, is the collapsible bow a good route to go down? If you have a video up about it already, can you respond with link. Thanks!
@NUSensei8 жыл бұрын
Most collapsible bows are rather gimmicky and don't work very well. That's all I can say on it, as I haven't personally shot one.
@stever76278 жыл бұрын
Dang. Was hoping to get more input on it. I have to travel through my town for a few miles before I get to the forest. I just don't want to have a bow slung over my shoulder. Lol. Thanks though.
@edenfijd8 жыл бұрын
A take-down bow is a viable option. I just bought a 68 inch take-down recurve bow that breaks down into 3 major pieces with each being about 24 inches or so in length. That shouldn't be too hard to pack in and out, and it is certainly easier than carrying around a full length, strung bow like you said.
@stever76278 жыл бұрын
Alright. Yeah, sometimes depending on where I go, I need to take public transportation. Don't know how they'd respond when I strut in with a bow slung over my shoulder, heh. I can keep it on the outside of my back even if it doesn't pack down small enough. As long as it doesn't LOOK like a bow. Lol. Thanks for your input :)

hallo i am looking to taking this up as a hobbie can you give me some advice i know i what to go for the takedown bow but do i need professional training or can this be self taught?
@NUSensei9 жыл бұрын
I have already covered this question in a video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3PMf6xpa9N8o9k). In short, you can acquire the basics of archery to an extent, but having someone to point out what you are doing will ensure that you are doing the right thing. The more you try to figure it out on your own, the more likely you are to acquire bad habits and technique.

Hi Sensei do you think that traditional archery could be mixed with hunting archery? I really like the traditional Hungarian bow style and the shooting style But I've never seen anyone hunt with those type of bows and their manly on the horse back when their shooting Im really curious about your answer....
@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky37335 жыл бұрын
David Petrov well it’s definitely doable its a smaller bow so i wont be difficult to move around it in the woods i just dont think many of them have enough power to kill larger game, it obviously depends on what your hunting but you need to make sure you will kill your target rather than just hurting them
@B.D.E.7 жыл бұрын
What are your thoughts on Kyudo specifically? There's something appealing about all the ceremony, ritual and philosophy, but it can also be equally off-putting. It can often come across as prohibitively elitist, snobby and out-of-touch.

Greetings NuSensei! Would it be possible to put a hunting sight on an Olympic style bow? Is instinctive archery possible on this platform? You da man.
@NUSensei10 жыл бұрын
In short: yes and yes. Sight mounts are universal, so you can put any sight on an Olympic bow. If you want to put on a 5-pin sight, you can. However, it doesn't make much sense to. Sport-style archery is shot over set distances, so a single adjustable ring is far more reliable than having to get markings for five pins. The purpose of hunting sights is to cover a range of distances without having to adjust, a scenario that does not exist in sport archery. Like any other bow, Olympic bows can be shot instinctively. Few people do so because instinctive archery takes many years of consistent training to acquire, and some people can never achieve that. For more consistency and accuracy, target archers need to aim, so barebow shooters are more likely to use a point of reference, such as facewalking or gap shooting, rather than being purely instinctive.

Thank you very much for the quick and through reply sir. I have been doing backyard archery with my sf archery set with targets set at 15-25 meters. We have a nice 2 storey wall as the backstop. A meter in between our targets and this wall we drape a thick rubber mat over a clothesline supported by stilts and there are times when we go for 3d-style archery. Okay okay I also shoot fruits and jugs filled with water. Even the odd tuna can, all with the suspended rubber mat as the backstop to safely catch any misses. Sure im using an Olympic bow but archery fulfills my robin hood dreams of childhood. Heck I have both the sport and traditional back quiver. My sights rock and ill stick to them. Anyway im also meeting friends who shoot competitively to help keep me in the proper form. Happy shooting to you! :-)

left side is more accurate doe
@NUSensei9 жыл бұрын
"Effective" and "efficient" are dubious buzzwords that have come from Lars viewers. The bow will function the same, so it is not more effective or efficient. Which side is used depends on the style being shot - Western European and Mediterranean more often used the left side; Eastern European and Asian styles used a thumb draw with horse bows and shot on the right side.

Hunting, going in to a forest wearing camouflage and hope nobody shoots you by accident when they see something moving but don't see a human over there...
@TheOriginalCFA19797 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I've never met (keyword) anyone who was dumb enough go into the woods during the hunting season dressed in camouflage. Around here people wear, at minimum, a bright orange hat and usually an orange vest. I've also seen people go in in full neon orange overalls and come out with an animal. If you know what you're doing, you don't need to dress up like a jackass to bag an animal. That being said, I've never seen anyone on TV or in most images of hunters online who had the sense to do this.
@Pidalin6 жыл бұрын
many people here don't know anything about hunting season and wearing camouflage cloths is normal here, so that accidents are happening here sometimes :-) and we have tradition of people who sleeping in forests, but that people are not stupid I guess and know when hunting season is

CFA where im from, bright orange is used only if your going hunting with a firearm. Bow you dont need it since most of the time, hunters hide in the treestands. Do it all the time even with a painted camo face
