I love styrene! The first time saw a props guy use it to make a quick ornate box for a TV show I was the tech consultant on, I was like wow! That’s so easy to use?! What is it?! And ironically, it’s as expensive here in The Netherlands than foam core! I always smuggle a few big foam code sheets from the US!

I was hoping for more ideas on how or what to use the square or circular tubing for when building model kits. However, I found this video very educational, especially for how different kinds of glues affect the styrene. I have been using brick styrene sheets for practicing painting techniques with various forms of paint as well as learning how to use spray paints/primers so as to not cover up raised/recessed panel lines on my actual models. Also using them to test color combos and proper thinning of my paints before brushing.

Thank you for this posting. To my fellow hicks I recommend a good art supply store. I'm amazed at the access to materials and techniques they offer. Also, often well-hidden urban plastics supply houses have been accommodating of my need both for specialized materials and advice.

Hi, great tutorial. I don't have a vacuum forming machine but do have a rough 3d cardboard shape that is made of strips to create a curve. Can i use styrene sheets and a heat gun/hair dryer to form over my 3d form to create a smoother curved piece, or is it easier to use strips of 2mm plasticard and sand the edges round like half a ball? Thanks in advance.

Just a side note, if you use regular metal tweezers, they can become magnitized and it definitely affects your modeling when you go to get tweezers tor your styrene or polystyrene and you have applied glue but your tweezers attract small drills or other metal. I have just today bought all new tweezers made especially of not magnetic alloys used by watchmakers who cannot afford to accidentally magnetize gears which magnitize other gears and the watch cannot then be made to run. These tweezers are not expensive.

i'm wondering whether using a "warm" to "hot" lacquer thinner in an airbrush to chemically etch in lieu of sanding would work well. i'm a beginner car model builder, and am finding that complete body sanding is a chore i'd like to avoid, if possible.

Opan, I don't do use Styrene , but I've seen videos of guys using Tamiya thin cement, which flows into the seams (seems?) using capillary action. I have also seen Plastruct Plastiweld, but have heard that is stinky and tends to evaporate very quickly.
@volatilesky
@volatilesky 4 жыл бұрын
Tamiya is the best I've found - humbrol cement takes 24 hours to dry and it's almost like a runny gel, plastruct solvent evaporates really fast/smells awful and is very thin. Tamiya cement is a great medium in consistency (and OPTIONS from super thin to medium and thick), and has a much better working time/holds parts in place better. Plastruct only really works decently if you do the syringe method like in the video.

I'm trying to make a part for a gundam model but I have no idea how to go about it. it would be a round guard for a rapier like weapon but it would need to be hollow, think like cutting off a section from a cone with the diameter of a large marker leaving the top open (or even better just look at this: 3.bp.blogspot.com/-re031LU5Q18/UqR-UN6ju2I/AAAAAAACYJM/g4Jdk8yFkYY/s1600/2000.jpg not the tip holding the lightsaber-like blade, the one just before it) got any suggestions?

When I was a kid it was always ABS. Why in the world do we call it styrene now? Isn't it the same stuff? I can't imagine how all the users changed their common nomenclature. Or maybe there was a "black hole" decade or two when everybody was playing video games and nobody knew what a hobby shop was...

@@EricStrebel Thanks Eric. I found this: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?198979-Styrene-vs-ABS "ABS is a form of styrene: Acrylonitrile-butadiende-styrene There is no plastic that is actually just pure styrene as that is a liquid. The name styrene usually is used to refer to either ABS or polystyrene which is the simplest form of polymerized (plastic) styrene." Sounds like the chief practical difference is flexibility/brittleness & performance under impact. Learned something. This day's just getting better & better!
