These things are so neat! There are a number of them on Amazon so I don't want to link to one in particular. A lot of them look exactly like this one too.

Just an fyi, the styrofoam is not absorbing the heat. Its actually sticking to the wand, and preventing air from getting to it, so it cools down. I have one of these, and have done several controlled experiments with it. The longer you cut, the more build up gets on the wand, the slower it cuts. When you remove it from the foam, it burns the residue off, heating up again to operating temperature.

Hi. I saw your video too late and... trying to disassemble it, I already broke my polystyrene cutter. Can you please tell me how to fix it? The positive wire is still perfectly in its place but the "ground" wire is free in the handle without any connection and I do not know where it is necessary to attach it. Thank you.

Can you bend the wire thing? Like it doesn't have something bittle inside to keep it red hot
@AutistiVision
@AutistiVision Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, interesting idea. I think it would bend. Carefully the way you would bend pipe without kinking. I would have to find a spring that is close to the diameter of the tube to slide over it while bending.

I have one of these. I find it is JUST able to cut through a 50mm slab of foam if you apply a little constant pressure and a lot of patience. My feeling is that the power supply that came with the tool (Rated at 6V 2.5A) is barely adequate. The 2.5A is a joke. I'm sure a tiny bit more power would fix the problem. Maybe a power supply that actually delivers what it is rated at?

Oh, look it up on Amazon. It comes with 3 tips now and one of them is a broad wire. Otherwise, yes, with a small tube bender (which is a spring) you could bend this into an arc and it would still work.

I have one of these wands and I love it, but it's quit working. Because I'm recklessly fearless, I took it apart and found that one of the wires had come apart. Almost looks like it got too hot. My problem now is I don't know where to reconnect the wire. The one still connected goes into the gold receptacle and there's a hole in the side of that. Does the wire go into the same hole with the attached wire, or does it go into the hole? Do I need to take that gold piece apart to repair it? I'm afraid to do anything else with it, although it couldn't hurt anything because it doesn't work anyway. Can you help me out with this? Thanks so much.

It may be defective. But also try unplugging it and waiting. It has a work cycle that it won't let you go past. I've had mine shut off, thinking it was on too long. But playing around with the plug and the plug to the cutter, and it always comes back on. Wait a good 30 seconds with it unplugged.

lol, well, as you saw, I took mine apart. It didn't go back together ideally. My wire contact is a bit compromised, thus yea, a little less current I'm sure. The good thing is that they're inexpensive. I may get another one just to see how much faster they are when I don't mess with them. :)

Nice demo, but, Questions still arise.. Did the smoke stink up the House ? Was the melted foam and plastic hard to clean off, afterwards ? How much did it cost ? Would you recommend it to your best Friend or Pastor ?
@AutistiVision
@AutistiVision 6 жыл бұрын
lol, entertaining comment. :) Ok, yes, the smoke stinks up the house. And gosh, is it toxic? I don't know? But it smells toxic. Funny to see all this scrapbooking moms casually using these but wow, the fumes are bad. The melted foam does build up on the wand but can be periodically wiped off with a paper towel or rag. You just gotta do it quick to keep the rag from melting. I think it was about $20. My best friend is not one to worry about things like fumes and he would do far worse on his own so, yes, I'd recommend it to him. My pastor? Well, sure. He might cut a bunch of circles in a sheet of styrofoam and make it "holy." ... ... ... I'm sorry...

For precision I would not use this, or probably any cut for that matter way too sloppy. It's too hot and deforms the entire work surface as it melts away material from both sides. If there was a way to regulate the heat maybe it might be worth the $9.00. Other than that thanks or the post, now I know what not to buy.
@AutistiVision
@AutistiVision 5 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Yes, it's not a super precision cut, but it's fine for most people. A great way to get things to the basic shape you want quickly.
