Dennis has clearly stated that this was recorded right after Tommy joined. That’s him singing harmonies and playing guitar. No lead vocals were added by TS yet.

@@billhayes7014 I did some research EQUINOX was released December 1, 1975 . John Curelewski (RIP) quit days before the tour began so he never played these songs live with the band. Styx and the management had to quickly find a replacement. Tommy Shaw left M.S FUNK and joined Styx in December 1975. Also Tommy Shaw was replaced in M.S FUNK by Fergie Fredericksen (RIP) who later replaced Bobby Kimball in TOTO after Kimball was fired in 1983 thus Fergie Fredericksen was the lead singer on TOTOS 1984 album 👉 ISOLATION. Small world indeed.

@@waltersimmons946Thanks for the reply and additional information. I was a disc jockey in Los Angeles during most of the 1970's, mostly as album oriented rock (AOR) stations and we played a lot of Styx music from the RCA/Wooden Nickel releases. I still listen to The Serpent is Rising frequently. I was a music director when A&M released Equinox and we played the heck out of it. A&M gave me tickets to see Styx at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. They had just released Crystal Ball and were the opening act for Journey (pre Steve Perry) who were promoting their album Next. The jock I went to the concert with was a huge Styx fan and logged their entire set and then played the entire set the next day on his show. As luck would have it, the A&R folks at A&M records were listening to our broadcast, called the station and the next day we were interviewing Tommy Shaw in the studios. That kicked off a great relationship between me, A&M and the band that actually kind of continues to this day. I was invited to the premier of The Grand Illusion at the Magic Castle in Hollywood which took place on 7/7/77. Pretty much saw them every time they were in town including parties afterwards. Tommy Shaw actually tried to pawn a groupie off on me so he could get away but he was much cuter than me so she was having none of that. I reconnected with Dennis awhile back when he was at the PBS station where I was working, pledging the Sound Stage concert he did in Chicago quite a few years ago. I ended up interviewing him for the pledge show and we spent a lot of time off camera talking about the collapse of Styx, his brief return in the 1990's and his permanent departure. An awful lot of bad feelings between all of the band members which is really a shame since their chemistry relied on the entire unit. I saw them in an early HD video from Itchycoo Park in Tennessee sans Dennis and they weren't very good trying to play the hits which were originally written and sung by Dennis. They have gotten better at performing without him but the records they have released post Brave New World, haven't really appealed to me.

...I keep hoping for more live recordings (if available) from the band during this time period...an archival box set of early-mid 70s live stuff would be a true gift for Styx fans...

Tommy Shaw is evil to prevent Dennis from playing with the band that he wrote and composed seven of their eight hit songs for. Shame on you Tommy!
@stevewatz1924
@stevewatz1924 2 ай бұрын
Not just Tommy's decision. So what if DDY wrote those hits. You do realize there are anywhere from 8-10 songs per album and there were 3 other songwriters. Styx fans are Styx fans because of JY, Chuck and John, John Curulewski AND Tommy Shaw, not just DDY. Yeah, it sucks because he was great, but he wanted to go in a direction nobody else did. Why can't DDY fans recognize that? They wanted to be a rock band, not a ballad/show tune/soft rock opera band. I miss him, but they're doing what they want to do, not what he wanted them to do.

John Curlewski quit Styx just days before the Equinox tour. Jim Vose found Tommy Shaw playing in a bowling alley and brought him to Styx whose only requirement was to hit the high notes in Lady. After Tommy was officially part of Styx did they realize how great he was on guitar, vocals, and songwriting. Crystal Ball was written before Tommy joined.

What sucks about this? This epitomized the sound of 70's rock! Plus, they were opening up for Deep Purple for fu(KS sake!!! Did you want them to play "Christopher, Mr. Christopher" or "Unfinished Song"? That's right, for the most part 2 ballads in their first 5 albums...back when they were a rock and roll band, and playing some pretty heavy stuff! This was 1975, there was no "Babe" or "Mr Roboto" yet...lol
