8mm Film: Charles Miller
Transfer/Production: Analog Kid Audio Video
Restoration/Sync: www.genesismuse...
A big thank you to Charles for lending his films. If you have any 8mm concerts that need transfer, restoration, and syncing please contact us.
Longish clips (for 8mm): Put Me On, Lorelei, Mademoiselle, Fooling Yourself, Suite Madame Blue, Crystal Ball, Lady, Light Up, Come Sail Away, Midnight Ride, Miss America, Born for Adventure, and some great between song moments. This is Styx on the same bill as Uriah Heep, if you look closely you can see Uriah Heep's rainbow and Firefly logo behind the band.
Technical Details:
This is one of the best quality 8mm films I have worked on, and at times it really looks pro quality. It was scanned at 2k and then cleaned up with Artemis AI, and then I removed misc spots/dirt. I normally wouldn't do quite so much NR, but the image quality and definition was so amazing for 8mm that it totally worked, to my eyes anyway.
I didn't do any stabilization as it didn't really need it, and the image is very close to the stage, I didn't want to cut anything off for the very minor handheld camera issues. I then ffmpeg interpolated to 60fps for smooth motion which makes this film really astounding.
The audio was a bit of a bear as there are several good Styx recordings from this tour, but not many complete high quality recordings. They also changed their setlist and Put Me On was so rarely played, there is just one audio recording of it out there. So I ended up using 4 different shows to match this film (Chicago 77, Boston 77, Fresno 77, and Winterland 78) as no known Columbus 1977 audio exists. I tried to get the best quality and match for the tracks played, and then EQed them to sound reasonably similar so they worked well together. Some of the radio shows were dry so I added some reverb and compression. Styx is generally consistent on how they play their songs so the match is pretty good, but the guitarwork and vocal phrasing is never going to be exactly the same, so I could only match it reasonably well.
I have worked on hundreds of reels of 8mm, and this show is honestly some of the best footage that this tiny film standard can produce. Amazing job that Charles did some 40 years ago.

Watching this feels like stepping out of a time machine.... It's emotional seeing a legendary band in its early years, going out there and trying to prove itself to the world, not yet knowing how big they would eventually become. I wasn't born until 1985 but I'm a diehard classic rock fan. Seeing this brings tears to my eyes because it is better than I ever imagined

Jesus Christ! That's the best 8mm footage I've ever seen! Honestly, many moments of this video can even challenge a footage done by professional cameras! The lights, the pyrotechnics, the stage show and the whole atmosphere is amazingly captured on this film, which is really impressive for a 8mm. Even a little joking around by Tommy is captured :) Also, it is interesting to see and hear a show from The Grand Illusion era, which took place a month and a half before releasing the album. Watching Born For Adventure, it seems I have already forgotten Dennis's fencing scene :D Also, I have never seen JY with a Gibson Les Paul! And I'm surprised ,Tommy played a Gibson Doubleneck during Fooling Yourself!

I was supposed to be at that show but got sick and couldn't make the trip. I'm in Cincinnati. They didn't play here. After seeing this, I'm really pissed. Some great songs. Midnight Ride and Born for Adventure probably weren't played much, if at all, after this. Put Me On and Light up as well. I never got to see them until Paradise tour.

Thank you so much for posting! My favorite two bands are Styx & Genesis. Interesting the genesismuseum provides this material. I've been able to find plenty of 70s Genesis video clips, but Styx has been almost non-existent. It's been my understanding their manager didn't want them filmed. Maybe he thought they'd sell less tickets? I recently found another video on KZbin that was similar of the Pieces of Eight "Main Event" tour the following year, but I can no longer find it. Was that your footage? I'd love to watch that again, and anything you have from this incredible group with it's classic line-up. I'm also a huge fan of Yes & ELP, but I can find footage of them from the 70s. Very little of Foreigner, a fair amount of Kansas, the American version of prog rock bands until they head more AOR. What great performers Styx had become by this time! Vocals & harmonies 2nd to none in all of Prog Rock. And Dennis with his new Oberheim synth that so many cool solos would eventually come out of. The date on this show pre-dates the release of the Grand llusion album which this tour is clearly promoting.

This is definitely 1977 my last year in elementary school, I got my mother (while she was shopping) to buy the albums Eqinox and Crystal Ball for me from Sears in April that year and Grand Illusion didn't come out till July. I was 13 and my birthday wasn't till September (I turned 14 then) and I got Grand Illusion in November that same year. Styx to this day is the only band that I got 3 different albums from the same band in one year. I started earning my own money in 1978 and got their succeeding albums yep even Kilroy was here. And saw them in Columbia South Carolina in 1983 (The Kilroy tour) for $12.50 . I had no idea they'd break up for 13 years after that period. I'm not bragging but those were the days, compared to this dark period this country is currently going through now because certain idiots want to control our lives. It isn't only censorship anymore.
