Boy, Jay clearly didnt know squat about Styx and was glued to his cue card like an oxygen feed. What a dork. Styx is classic.
@boomerang89094 жыл бұрын
Oh, but cut him some slack. He was a touring stand-up comedian, being David Letterman's guest for years, and he was filling in for Johnny Carson as guest host when Styx made a comeback after six years so some refreshing on his part and getting to know music more when he was given hosting on permanent basis from 1992. And cue cards were taped to musicians' albums he would introduce in the years since.

Styx was good at the start. But needed a guitar hero. JY. More guitar: JC. Wizard of Strings Tommy. Someone to play Tommy, Glen. ( this version) Someone to play John: Todd. Someone to play Chuck: Glen again. Dennis can't tour? Someone to replace Dennis: Gowan. ...Glen tired of travelling: Hire Ricky. Chuck when he feels good enough.. Last of all: someone to produce, play, sing, help Tommy and the band manage all that creativity: Will.Styx is good now.

As a longtime Styx die-hard, I have a lot of mixed feelings looking back at this, 29 years later. It’s a very good performance, but by that time, Styx had effectively become the Dennis DeYoung band. It was like him and a bunch of sidemen. While I didn’t like the way Tommy and JY hostilely took over the group, they did a great album in “The Mission,” and Styx feels like a band again. Furthermore, the lineup in this performance was short lived. John never made another album with the band and died in 1996. Chuck had recently found out he had AIDS, which was then a death sentence. Thankfully treatment for the disease dramatically improved a few years later, and he’s still alive. And Dennis’s only subsequent album with the band was “Brave New World,” which I consider to be the band’s worst album. Glen is a good guitarist and songwriter, but I don’t think he was the best choice for a replacement for Tommy. I think Rik Emmett of Triumph would’ve been ideal. Anyway, this is still a significant part of Styx history, and the next to last of their sixteen top 40 singles. Thanks for posting!

I love classic, DDY. I will never not give credit to him where it's due...but I think this is one of his absolute worst songs. So, so cheezy. And I am not even anti ballad. I actually quite like his songs on Brave New World. In fact, I like that album in general. A lot of great songs. The production sound suffers from existing right during the transition to digital home studios, plus the disjointedness is painfully obvious, but the individual songs are good. For a long time, I refused to get Edge because I couldn't bear to think of Styx without Tommy. After Cyclo...and seeing them live many times in that era, and growing to LOVE Glen Burtnik, I finally went back and got Edge....and the great irony is, the Glen songs are really the only ones I like. lol
