WOW!!!!!!!! Very deep and a true snap shot of these unbelievable tumultuous times.! I can't wait till we can say...These "Were" The Times...and be able to see the Amazing Styx perform it live - on stage - where they are meant to be. We need music to really live a full life...it's almost as important as the air we breath. It's the story of our lives and we need to hear it, remember it and feel it in our hearts and souls again.

Guitarist James Young told the story behind this tune : “‘These Are the Times’ [2003] is really AN INTERVENTION SONG and what the lyrics are have kind of evolved […]. When we first started working on it […], Tommy [Shaw] was heavily involved, and still is, with drug interventions, and very supportive of a lot of groups that do work in that field, and I’ve been through a number of those, notably with our dearly departed first drummer John Panozzo. The song was about intervening in someone’s life, kind of in a way that Chuck [Panozzo]*, who is now openly a gay man who has come out and announced that he’s HIV-positive and his struggles with this […]. Ultimately, what the lyrics finally evolved into, in a way, was the passing of my younger brother from a lymphoma and when we had to take him off life support. When we were in his room, everyone was around crying and it was very emotional and from the next room comes THE SOUND OF JIMI HENDRIX’ ‘PURPLE HAZE.’ This is in the intensive care unit and I said, ‘This is my brother speaking to me, speaking to us.’ And it lightened the mood. ‘I hear voices from beyond the veil,’ it sort of inspired that line […]. SO THAT SONG HAS KIND OF BECOME ABOUT HELPING THOSE, THAT THERE IS SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR, FOR THOSE THAT THINK THERE ISN’T.” 💚🎶💜 May you rest in peace, John Anthony Panozzo (1948 - 1996)… 🌹 * John Panozzo’s twin brother.

21 years old and over the past year I've grown a major obsession with Styx. I'm a huge heavy metal fan but Styx somehow caught my attention and I've been in love ever since. I can't imagine seeing them in their prime. I'm hoping Dennis joins them for a special tour so I can see them live with close to the original lineup. Rock on! 😁🤘

Sorry to break it to the people in this thread, but the original lineup is not getting back together and you didn't see the original lineup in 1982. Tommy Shaw is a long time member, but not an original member of Styx. Even if Dennis joins them, John P. is deceased. This version of Styx is amazing. I wish Chuck would join them around IL when they tour. JY still rocks. Styx will always rock, even with only one original member left.

Durian Durian you are very correct Durian. Styx put out some very mediocre albums in the 90’s, and doing that can put you directly in the has been category. No one was more shocked than I about this album. I had a friend recommend it. It took about three listens to really appreciate how awesome this thing was. It’s now on my top 10 best album list! What a monster! DDY has never done anything so cool and I do hold him responsible for killing Styx the first time with that God awful “Music Time” from “Caught in the Act”.

Fantastic!! Great meaningful song from a fantastic under appreciated album. Hoping there’s some forgiveness in the very near future and the current Styx can bring back Dennis & Glen for one last super duper tour and album. Who wouldn’t want to see the Beatles again if that was possible? RIP John P & John C , but how about stepping up, forgiving & forgetting the bad and giving us fans who see you guys as Our Beatles one last coast to coast tour. All of current Styx plus Dennis & Glen performing together would be a dream come true for so many of us. Can’t wait to hear your new music. Stay safe & healthy.

Dennis WANTS one last tour for US his fans and for the fans of Styx. It’s JY & Tommy who are saying no. JY’s quote from so many years ago was something like ‘they will be playing hockey on the river Styx before we would ever get back with Dennis’. Well from all that’s happened so far in 2020 in our country & in the world it’s time for everyone to man up and start lacing up your skates. Wasn’t John Panozzo once a goalie? I think this track is the best one on *Cyclorama.* But the CD as a whole is better than what it was given credit for. But going back to this song, why it wasn't released as a single I don't know...
@@Deborahtunes I think it was because at the time there were (and still are) a lot of "DeYoung purists"
@Deborahtunes3 жыл бұрын
@@AnnHatzakis ~ Well it's true that this song was originally meant for *Brave New World.* But DDY refused to allow it on the CD. As for Dennis's crowd, they are never going to like anything Styx does because of him not being there. So I don't take anything his fans think seriously, because they can't be objective about the situation. But also, I would hardly call Dennis a "purist". DeYoung once said in an interview that he doesn't like "musical purism". Why I don't know...

@Durian Durian ~ JY has been doing this for years in Styx. It has nothing to do with Tommy. Go look at the band's history, and you'll see. From most of Styx's A&M era, up through their 2017 Lp, JY at the most, wrote two songs for each album, and that was all. Now he collaborated with Dennis on several tracks, from their very first album. But by himself, after Styx signed with A&M, JY usually wrote no more than two songs, (if that); for any given project. James said himself in 1983, during an interview, that he tends to focus more on playing guitar; and the engineering aspect for the band. That's his choice, no one is making Young not write songs. With a minimum of 3 (at times 4), singer/songwriters in the band, each of them can't have 3 or more tracks on the album. Plus, I can't say I blame JY. It seems like every label Styx has been on, ignored his material for Dennis and/or Tommy. That's the way it's always been. If a label ignores you, why bother writing so many songs?
