When the BOEING FA-XX enters the theater, the Russians and Chinese are going to have to scramble to counter this incredible American aircraft. Primary missions include air combat, ground attack, surface warfare, and close air support. Other missions include reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition and electronic attack. With the F-35 Lightning II in a supporting role, and UNCLAS unmanned aircraft, NOTHING will be able to intimidate the Americans. Certainly nothing Russian or Chinese.

@mopar31 They are having trouble perfecting a 5th gen supercruising turbofan for the PAK FA. The best one they have is the 117S, an updated version of the AL-31F family, which has limited supercruise capability. They would need an equivalent to the Raptor's PW F119.

I'm American and have to admit I'm impressed.This is not all propaganda.Russians have better jet fighters than we do.Our US Airforce conducted mock air to air combat with our F-15 Eagles against Russian fighters and the Russian fighters scored kills on both F-15 Eagles.These results were published by our own US Airforce,I read the whole article.I was stunned.Our F-18 and the new F-35 are no match against Russian fighters.Our F-22 has many problems,although I give the edge to our F-22,barely.

@moredinero True. The PAK FA design team combined the best features of those three planes and rolled them into one airframe design. YF-23's nose, forward fuselage and movable vertical stabilizers, F-22's planform design and Flanker's spaced engines and tail sting. The tail sting contains a rear-facing radar.

Actually the first PAK-FA was tested on the runway in russia on 24 of december when the engines was tested and the plane taxied cross the runway. The first flight is planned for january-february 2010. Have some doubt about the plane joining the airforce by 2015 though.

@JohnMillimetron These are artist's impressions of the PAK FA I had sourced from the Internet at the time I made this video, which I uploaded prior to the PAK FA's first flight. The PAK FA isn't a direct copy of the F-22, but it incorporates the best features from both the F-22 and YF-23 and rolled into one airframe.

@apocalypse359 another name is SU-27UB. engine type AL31F LLUV. That was used only for experiments. Conclusion was as follows: Torque and maneoueverability at high speeds is more important then low IR signature and maneuverability at low speeds/reverse usage airborne. (rectangular "flat" exit creates dramatic turbulance that lowers torque significantly in comparison with round exit) Therefore you can witness axisymmetric thrust vectoring systems on Sukhoi and Mikoyan planes for more then 20 yrs

The PAK FA incorporates features from both the Raptor and Black Widow. It incorporates the Raptor's planform arrangement and the Black Widow's 'ruddervators'.
@ironfalcon100
@ironfalcon100 15 жыл бұрын
The Su-47 Berkut's FSW layout was only for technology demonstration, but the PAK FA's wing layout would superficially resemble that of the Raptor. The PAK FA should have 3D TVC, but the problem is the IR signature. The round nozzles would light up an IRST unit like a Roman candle.

@FelixRohatyn i dont remember what it's called but there's a way to see jet wakes in the air and actually follow it to the source. there are also missiles that use infrared tracking and follow the heat from the engine, i know that the B-2 and F-117 both have the jet inlets purposely set back from the end of the plane so the surrounding cool air can mix with jet exhaust and reduce the heat signature so it's harder for a SAM to track them

Not a direct replica, but the PAK FA's wing planform is based on the F-22. Take note of the engine spacing and the nozzles. Which plane is more stealthy both in the radar and IR spectrum?

@scorpions7536 Actually the Su-27 and MiG-29 were developed as a response to the "teen series" F14, 15 and 16. Each of those had some good ideas so the Russians developed those further and incorporated into the Su-MiG tactical duo. The idea of Su27 and MiG29 to have practically identical cockpits is very clever, any pilot can just switch from one to the other at short call and be very relaxed and comfortable to fly either craft. Nothing is ever as simple as copy, its all about developing ideas.
@ironfalcon100
@ironfalcon100 14 жыл бұрын
@LucoPunx Maximum speed in not that much of an important factor, as long as its top speed is above Mach 2. The 5500 km range for the PAK FA is internal fuel + 1 air refueling. It is not a long-range bomber. The maximum range is obviously misleading because it denotes its ferry range. The F-22 had the best specs available at the time it made its first flights and entered operational service.

Sooner or later, they might be facing a peer adversary (we know who they are). The playing field would have been leveled by then. BTW, looking at the PAK FA pictures, one thing catches my mind: The round nozzles - the PAK FA does not have the same degree of IR stealth as the F-22. It would be more vulnerable in the rear quarter from IR AAMs. Other than that, only its immediate F-22 rival, can hold some ground against the PAK FA in a dogfight, AFAIK.

The T-50 frontal VLO appearance, like the F-35, offers significant stealth capacity in all forward areas, crucial in most BVR fights. Mature PAK-FA will certainly offer more VLO capacity when the new 3DTVC supercruising engine is fitted. Major RCS reduction and supercruise ability presented by PAK-FA will deny F-22 and Legacy fighters advantage of first-look first-kill, compressing missile engagement timeline and space well inside BVR parameters, where T-50 superagility could prove decisive.

Colonel John Boyd himself, among othes, stated about US not having more than 5 combat usable airplanessince WW2 (mostly fighters), leading to development of new combat strategies, F16 and F18. they called him The Mad Major. Turned out not to be. Su-47 was a typo, i meant SU-34 in Gorgia. Sry about that. As far as the shooting F117 down, check it out, colonel Zoltan Dani (he shot it down) explains it, so do multiple other documentaries, specifically about using the mobile phone grid .

@ironfalcon100: Nice compilation. I can't get over how much this thing looks like a 22 though. I guess to achieve some of the things that the F-22 does, however, they kinda HAVE to model it after the Raptor. I just hope that it doesn't lead to friendly fire incidents as it would be hard to distinguish the silhouettes.

Judging from aerodynamic and airframe performance during its first flight, we can tell that most features found on superagile fighters like the Su-35, are present now in the T-50 (It even showed STOL capacity). To provide extreme agility, Sukhoi's design team employed all-moving stabilators and canted tail fins, a nodding movable LEX design, and 3D axi-symmetric engine nozzles. BTW, KnAAPO officials have disclosed that the aircraft has indeed an onboard AI computer,

As for F22, a good plane design should be done with the view of upgrades including the engines. Su50 was developed in the 80s the work was suspended in the 90s due to the political situation in Russia, i.e. change of government and economic difficulties. The F22 was put to proposal in 1991 and it was as a response to both, MiG 29 and Su 27 and intelligence that the Soviets were working on Gen5 fighter.

@val28l Note that US provided Soviets with C-47s on lend lease, they produced the LI-2 and then said it was a Soviet design. The major variation between the f-22 and the SU-50 are those big honkin exhausts on the back of the SU-50. As far as the US not being the center of the world, ask a New Yorker. Other than that we are very proud of US contributions to aerospace. 787's are looking good while Aussies say all A-380s should be grounded. Regardless airbus is going to take a bath on that plane.

Sometime next year, 2010, will be the PAK FA's rollout and first flight. As aviation fans, we are literally waiting in impatience for the Russian 5th Gen fighter's debut. Just waiting, waiting, waiting. The longer the PAK FA is delayed, the longer its U.S. rival, the F-22 Raptor can enjoy air dominance and hold the crown of world's best air superiority fighter. And I am skeptical on how many PAK FAs would be built and how many would the Russian VVS operate. I'd guess 40-50.

"it will be just as vulnerable against the F-22 as a 4th gen fighter, from BVR." And how exactly are you do that? considering that the F-22 has lost its primary IRST capacity during pre-production. In a typical BVR engagement, the signature that counts is the frontal exposition, All forward area of the PAK-FA display VLO appearance similar to the F-35. If LM sells this feature as 5th gen. material and as being efficient, why wouldn't it be the case on the T-50?

We must wait the production models to appear to see if the current VLO performance will be reduced. In either case, current configuration shows a certain mastery by the Russians of VLO design, and besides, as I noted earlier, stealth in only a feature among others to maximize combat performance. As stealth advantage can diminish in the near-future, Sukhoi has mostly put emphasis on maneuvrability, aerodynamics, range and weapon payload as basis of a long lasting fighter for the 21th century.
