Labuan, an island of the coast of Borneo, offers a rich blend of history, culture and natural beauty, making it an ideal location for an educational visit. During this trip on 12-14 September 2005 , Sekolah Ugama Arab Menengah Perempuan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit (SUAMPRIPAD) students had the opportunity to explore significant landmarks that highlighted the island's diverse heritage.
Located in the heart of Labuan town, the Labuan Museum is housed in a pre-war colonial building and features over 700 historical and ethnological artifacts. Directly in front of the Labuan Museum is Dataran Labuan, or Labuan Square. This public square feature four Flame of the Forest trees planted in 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The square serves as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike with benches and landscaped gardens providing a peaceful respite from the bustling town.
Located near Ramsey Point, the Labuan Marine Museum focuses on the island's underwater life and marine heritage. The museum features 16 galleries with exhibits on marine biodiversity, including aquariums filled with tropical fish and corals. An enormous whale skeleton outside the museum adds to the educational experience, making it a must-visit for marine enthusiasts.
Known locally as Taman Damai, Peace Park serves as a memorial for soldiers who fought in Borneo during World War II. The park features landscaped gardens and a memorial mound, providing a tranquil space for reflection and remembrance. It is a significant site for those interested in history and the impact of war on the region.
The Labuan Chimney, a unique historical landmark, is a remnant of a coal mining operation from the 19th century and stands as a testament to the island's industrial past.
The Labuan Bird Park is a notable sanctuary housing over 580 birds, including various species of fowls and exotic birds. Visitors can enjoy close encounters with the birds in a serene environment.
Labuan is home to educational institutions such as Labuan Matriculation College and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (Labuan International Campus). These institutions contribute to the island's educational landscape and attract students from various regions, fostering a vibrant academic community.
