In the quest to make my Open U.P. the absolute one bike to rule them all, I needed to fill that gap between my beefy gravel wheels and my Extralite "road" wheels. Light, robust and cheap:is... can it be done?

Agree pretty much on every key point here regarding the tires: yes, the René Herse Bon Jon Pass Extralight ride very smooth (I ride them with inner tubes, though). I like them more than the Panaracer Gravelking Slick which is way less supple and also quite a bit bouncy. But indeed: I'd also wouldn't trust the Extralights for any prolonged bits on unsealed surface. And yes: any tire supplier should strive for a tan sidewall like René Herse. That brown of the Panaracers really doesn't cut it. Not by a long shot.

I had very hard to pop the Bon Jon tires on my Zipp303S too, even with easylube from schwable. Fortunaly I followed your trick with a tube to pop the tire first. My all black bike looks great with these tan wall tires. I put 100ml in each tires, the front one holds air pretty well, the rear one looses pressure after a few hours. I only rode 10km, the tires may need more km to seal properly.

Another fine entertaining video, Tobias. Just for the benefit of others reading the comments - these carbon rims from Xiamen, China are sold by dozens of companies, some with American brand decals on them. I've personally built up 8 wheels using rims with a similar spec to these. They were some of the best rims I've built among thousands of wheel builds. The finished wheels have very even tension, and are true and round. I've ridden a set similar to this on my Canyon for 3000 miles and they never needed truing. Too bad about the Rene Herse tires, they ride great but they always leak no matter what sealant Jan says to use this week...

What are your thoughts on Caden wheels? I'm a bit impressed by their tubular wheels, (just from reading the specs) less so with the clinchers and tubeless wheels. At 1020 grams for a set, they are about 40 grams heavier than the new Extralite tubulars, but they also cost half as much as the Extralites. And then I get to learn how tubs ride, and I can explore those fabled silk tubulars. :) BTW, a THM Tibia stem is on the way, step one in project "Keep the weight of the Strada decent". :)
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 4 жыл бұрын
I've went down the tubular route before and it's simple way to drop some weight for sure... In the end I sold my set because I was not prepared to deal with carrying a spare tubular and the headache that it involves getting a puncture (In my opinion/experience is much more work than Tubeless) A climbing tubular set has to be below 1000g before I even think it worth thinking about :P The tubular tires usually end up a bit heavier though depending on size.... can you even get 30+mm tubs nowadays? Regarding, Caden, I can't say much... never tried or seen them in real life. In-house hubs never makes me very exited about brands like this. Not saying they are bad, just my own preference, I think the hubs are way more important than the rims now that I live in disc brake land, and today I would no personally would not get anything below a DT240 hub.
@rasmuswi
@rasmuswi 4 жыл бұрын
@@ridesofjapan it's actually that allegedly wonderfully supple ride of tubs, and particularly silk tubs, that intrigues me. And I'm old enough to remember when nobody had a saddle bag on their road bike, but everyone had a spare tub strapped to the saddle. Oh, and the Challenge Strada Bianca and the Challenge Gravel are available as 36 mm tubs, but unfortunately not with silk casing, the 30 mm Strada Bianca has that. Also, don't the Extralite wheels have in-house tubs? :)

The average person has about 100,000 hairs on their head. What also affects this is hair color, believe it or not. Blondes actually have an average of 150,000 hairs, while people with brown hair have an average of 110,000. Redheads have around 90,000. Each hair about 1 centimeter long weighs about .2 - .5 milligrams, so let’s average that to .35. Now, we multiply .35 by whatever color hair you have (Let’s say brown hair) and we get 38,500 milligrams. Now, we can divide that by 1000 to convert milligrams to grams, and we get 38.5 grams. The average person that has one centimeter long hair that has brown hair has around 38.5 grams of hair. -Kid Hermes, Quora. ... You have to shave your beard and head for the ultimate weight savings.

Great videos, keep up the great work! I'm having a challenge deciding between the Farsports and Light Bicycle. I was wondering what was your deciding factor to go with Farspots? Also, any thoughts of using Tubulito tubes with Rene Herse tires? I've heard when you take sealant weight into account they can be pretty competitive on weight and that would remedy the leaking side wall issue.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 3 жыл бұрын
At the time I was deciding, the farsports had the better weight combined with the exact rim dimensions I wanted and 180EXP hub. They both seem to change their lineup a lot, so the configurations might be different today. I don't use tubeless for weight reasons, it's only for the self-healing puncture abilities... tubolitos are in my spares kit. that being said, I would not get another pair of extralight Rene herse tires today if riding tubeless... too much hassle. (I retired the ones in the video, back to gravelkings) Cheers!

Do you attribute discs rubbing to the stiffness of the wheel or the fork? With the hub locked in place the rest of the wheel should not really matter. The fork however is key.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 4 жыл бұрын
I’m no engineer but if I’m allowed to speculate, I’d say the it’s mostly in the hub. (The fork will play a part as well I’m sure) Based on my riding, riding with my DT wheels I almost never get rub and I don’t need to be super picky with centering calipers. On my Extralite I definitely need to make sure it’s dead center to 100% avoid rub in the extreme out of the saddle efforts. But there’s definitely other factors as well involved like the rotors, lazy pistons etc etc. The rim flex though should matter at all like you said.

First, I think your videos are amazing (very cinematic, great typography, soundtrack, AND informative), I became a subscriber. I was not a weight weenie but after binging on your vids, I've caught the bug and I want a Farsport 30 mm road only wheelset for my 2018 Trek Domane SL 5. I'm new to the game and can't decide between the rims w/ nipple holes or w/o holes. Also having a hard time deciding between DT Swiss 240 and Carbon Ti. I'm a feather wt. at 125 lbs (57.7 Kg) and like to go on longish hilly rides. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! 🙏
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 4 жыл бұрын
P Kim cheer mate! it’s all down what your priorities are, if you want something light and that’s a priority, the carbon Ti is unbeatable. Holes or no holes there not really any benefit apart from not needing to use tape, on the other hand of you are prone to breaking spoked it will make it harder to repair.
@pkim8745
@pkim8745 4 жыл бұрын
@@ridesofjapan Thx for your input. Well then, I'm all in. Let's go w/ Carbon Ti as long as it's fairly low maintenance and sturdy. I'll go w/ no-hole rims, sounds simpler to set up (this will be my first tubeless!) And, luckly I've never broken a spoke in my life :-)

Could I ask,. I’m trying to decide weather to get a lighter set of 650s or buy some 700s. My bike came with 650s and currently have the switchback hills on them, lovely ride tbh and I seem to be able to keep up with most roadies with a good average most of the time. I don’t race but like to move some what quickly. Could you tell what the ride is like between the 2 ,Bon Jon’s and switch backs. Is there much of difference between the 2 in regards to rolling speed? Love the vid very entertaining and some amazing views!!!!
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 4 жыл бұрын
gaza4543 it’s over 1,5 years since I rode the switchback hills so I can’t really compare them. But like you said they roll super nice and I too didn’t have any huge problems keeping up on group rides. Riding on the front though at high speed that’s when you notice the aerodynamic disadvantages with such a big tire. (Or maybe it was in my head) Anything thing you can hide from is the weight. With a lot of climbing I definitely prefer narrower tires on tarmac.

You mentioned in your video that if the bead of the tire is unseated from the rim, there's a chance that the tire is either undersized or oversized for the rim. I started riding road tubeless last year with the Roval CL50 and Continental GP5000TL (25mm) setup. When there isn't sufficient air in the tire, the tire bead will unseat from the wheel. Is this something that I should worried about? My other tubeless experience is Zipp 30 Course with Schwalbe X-One and G-One. With both tires, even when they are completely deflated, their bead do not unseat from the wheel.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 4 жыл бұрын
That was mostly in regard to mounting the tires... I’ve found that if stays up on the shelf without air I usually only need to use my floor pump to seat the tire. Originally got this information from the Rene herese tubeless manuals some years ago, the smallest tubeless tire they make is the 35, so I imagine a 25mm tire would be prone to creep back into the channel more than a wider tire. I guess it all depends on the tubeless “shelf” on the rim as well. If you are worried try adding a layer of tape and see it there’s any difference.
@changrenyong7616
@changrenyong7616 4 жыл бұрын
@@ridesofjapan Thanks for the quick response! I may give another tubeless road tire (perhaps the new Schwalbe Pro One TLE) a try. I think my GP5000TLs are going bald! Earlier this year, I switched from Stan's tubeless sealant to Orange Seal. Before I switched, I took the GP5000TLs off the wheels to clean up the old sealant. I noticed loose strands of rubber - slightly thicker than hair - coming off the tires, on their sidewalls. I pulled a few of them off the tires. Two days ago when I went out for a ride, those loose strands of rubber appeared again, one from the front tire and one from the rear. It can't be good when your tires are going "bald".

Re-watching this for the 20th time as I'm riiight there ready to hit the order button! Did you ever consider the wider "gravel"-type wheels from Farsports? About 80-90g heavier for the set, but also 24 internal/30 external. Don't know if that's better for all-road use or not. Really stuck in between.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 3 жыл бұрын
No, not really since I have a proper 650b gravel wheelset already. This wheelset was meant as a comfortable option for 95% tarmac in various conditions that could handle the occasional gravel section out in the mountains. I don’t have any intention of putting on bigger tires than 35mm on these. For bigger tires than 35 I’d say a 24internal would probably be a better choice though.

Sorry mate, But we are about to boycott as much chinese products as possible! Although that will be very challenging due to their mass production,especially when it comes down to bikes/bike parts....... 😩 I’m too tall (and heavy!) for lightweight stuff anyway. So my titanium bike is at around 8 kg,which i find spectacular when i think of the bikes i started riding with in the 70ties. I started racing with 10 gears,today i have 20 which also is spectacular,so do i really need 22,24 or 26!? Instead investing money i will invest TIME on the bike,and it seems to pay off: I’m already faster than i would be even if i had a 4 kg bike! Go out on a ride and smash the watts!! 🚴💦
