That effect on tile is called foil. And I always play with characters on the icon side, it's easier and faster to read.

Got it this morning and played a 4 character game solo (I wanted to be able to teach it and know the answers to the questions the play brought up). I played on an easy level (more rounds before the eruption) but still failed to get to the sanctum in time (I missed a few rules but carried on anyway) after drawing lava and floor traps early, getting stuck at a dead end, then having to backtrack through the traps and lava again. This took out a couple of the characters, slowing our progress, and making us move all the way back to the entrance crossroads. By the time we got there it was almost halfway on the volcano track. Even though I felt like the game was constantly beating me down till that point, I felt glad that the randomness of the tiles drawn, coupled with my bad strategy, had led to this situation. On the negative side, I found the guardian meeples unbalanced (literally); not as easy to stand up as the character meeples. I also realised (part way in) that the characters I'd picked were all female (not a bad thing) and agree with you that the character tiles would have been much better with male/female versions of each to choose from (they want to sell their miniatures, I guess). I was impressed with how small the footprint of the game was; other exploration/character games (Mansions of madness/Gloomhaven/Journeys in Middle Earth etc.) take up so much room per character, along with the map tiles, but this was so much more manageable. Thanks for your reviews!

Thank you for taking the time to post -- it's great hearing what others think of the games. Getting beaten in a coop is a good thing, better to be too hard than too easy. Your description matches our experience in terms of it being VERY important to try to find an efficient path in and out.. If your path becomes too convoluted or blocked you just dont have time.

This really sounds like a great game. The luck aspect does seem to be a bit of an issue, but I will keep my eyes open for a copy. I hope you guys upload a playthrough.

I much prefer Sub Terra I (the first one! the blue one!) by a million times! PURE fun with no boring elements around! I just sold back the boring red one!

That's really interesting! We wondered if the order that we played the games might have biased us against the base Sub Terra.. I'd love to hear more about what you prefer of the original over the new one.

im planning to buy ST2, does the 1st one doesnt have chracter unique ability? because on some reviews for ST2 some minor complains is waiting for a character's ability to be performed 1st so other players can do their thing after the other one used their ability. is that the reason u sold the Volcano one?

Just got Subterra 2 and I LOVE the first one. Got the new expansion for the first one too. Waiting to get my first play. Love the enthusiasm for these games. I feel like their underrated.

@@COOPFORTWO so I’ve played Sub Terra II now like 5-6 times. I feel like it offers the same feeling of Sub Terra I but in reverse. What I mean is…..in Sub Terra I you feel the tension early and throughout the main phase of the game. There’s a bigger threat that you will trap yourself in, the clock is a huge threat. In Sub Terra II, that tension is in the final phase. Initiating the lava and definitely running away from the erupting volcano.

That sounds right to me -- when we have played sub terra (1); we have lost by trapping ourselves more than once.@@michaelrodriguez3129

@@COOPFORTWO Lol...totally happens. That's why too.....I do feel like Sub Terra I has more dynamic character (powers). Having a diver that can "teleport" across the map, protecting from cave-ins, better tile placement control, so far I feel Sub Terra I has better characters. I did just get the "A" expansion for Sub Terra II and will try out those characters.

Great discussion! I was looking for a comparison between the first and second, and you guys seem to be the only ones. Love your thoughts! I wonder though if ST1 has a bit more longevity and variability with all its expansions. It didn’t sound like you guys had tried the expansions for the first one. (And I don’t know if the new publisher, Naylor Games, will be making any more for ST2) I’m going to stick with the first one for now, for two reasons: 1. I don’t currently have the expansions for ST2, and I do have everything for ST1. 2. I think I like the caving theme more. The idea of taking artifacts from an ancient temple won’t age as well in some of my gaming groups

Thanks for the kind words. Your guess was right, we have not tried the expansions for ST1, and I have heard they do address some of the issues. I think really if you like ST1 then you are in a great situation, because after you get tried of it the move to ST2 will be all the more enjoyable.

Dude sub terra 1 is better than 2 ur spot on.. like you said, it's a better theme, more variable. And I LIKE a little unpredictability in games! You walk away with a story! Sometimes reviewers get mad that the game is hard or something wierd happened... I LIKE those memories! I feel like I'm in that real life situation with crazy stuff happening. And I feel feelings in st1. St2 is cleaner... but I feel nothing.

I've played both after loving the original for years and I find the simplicity of the first and the theme is completely ruined by the second game. The stuff I liked about it, such as a player being downed which makes the whole team prioritise getting them up, the horror being hard to remove, the way it suddenly ramps up during the game but the start is nice and easy, it all feels like playing a horror film with then really hard to solve puzzles that take the whole team. It's brilliant, the second really lacks the feeling of the original.

Keep up the great discussion videos. Two 10s. I'll have to pick up a copy at some point. The underwater caves and monsters of sub terra 1 (haven't played it) do appeal to me a little more thematically but you guys did a good job explaining how the sub terra 2 is more refined. Maybe at some point they could go back and release a second edition of sub terra 1 with some of the refinements they developed for two. Weird about the kickstarter. I guess it probably had something to do with unexpected rise in shipping costs?
