Hi, I really enjoyed this mystery. This story I found it a bit hard to get into at first but I'm so glad I kept going. It was a really good mystery. The little touch about the james bond movie was really fun too.

Another very solid entry. We had a real blast playing this one, especially at the end. We did think it was easier than the other level 4 difficulty games from cryptic killers -- maybe a 3.5/5? I do have some advice for other players: First, save the internet stuff for last after youve gone through all the physical documents. Second, go through the internet items from oldest to most recent (bottom to top). Third, when the game asks you at the end for your solution, make sure you aren't just guessing, that you have very clear and convincing evidence about your answer and make sure you can give good reasons for not only the identity but also good motive, means, opportunity, etc. -jesse

Great review as usual. I watched all but the last 2 minutes because I'm about a third of the way through Mission 2 and I don't want any strategy tips at this stage. Thrilled to see you gave it a 10 out of 10. As you already know, I play true solo and probably differently than most people, because I allow myself to read only 2-5 numbered paragraphs each day. This allows me to make better tactical decisions, and ramps up the sense of excitement and dread ---- and makes me feel that I'm getting more value for my money. I'm definitely in the "I love this game" camp not only because of the World War II theme and the roleplaying aspect but also I prefer short term tactical decision-making rather than long term strategic planning (although there's a bit of that too). So far, I haven't had any Agents get killed or have mortal wounds, but I can't get complacent because danger is lurking in almost every decision and luck can play a role too. I never feel the game is unfair (even when insufficient info is provided to make a proper choice) because of the unpredictability and "fog of war". The words "fog of war" came to my mind when you first started talking about the unfairness aspect of the game --- and then a few minutes later, you used exactly the same phrase in the video! The limited replayability is actually a plus for me because I have about a dozen other solo games I'm playing simultaneously, and I have 6 new games queued up anxiously waiting for table space to open up. I definitely have eclectic tastes when it comes to solo gaming as is evident from the games currently occupying space and permanently set up on large folding tables inside my condo ---- namely Unfair (56 plays and my #1 solo game); Imperium Classics/Legends/Horizons (86 solo games); History Maker Golf (Season 2 of a 42 tournament schedule using 450 of the best golfers of all time); Terraforming Mars (on my 63rd game); ISS Vanguard (Campaign game on my 6th planet); Masters of Crime: Rapture (new); Fallen Lands: A Post-Apocalyptic Board Game (10th game); Tapestry (21st game); Sherlock Holmes: The Baker Street Irregulars (2nd case); Tournament Fishing: The Deckbuilding Game (195th game); Second Season Football (Week #7 of a full 16 week season with the top All-Time players of all 32 NFL franchises and I'm playing every game for every team); Harmonies (13th game) and Rome: Fate of an Empire (2nd game). Even though there is a lot on my plate, I play in a very leisurely manner and never put stress on myself to play more than I enjoy. Today, I did manage to play every one of these games (except football) but it doesn't bother me if on some days I do much less. Sorry if I got carried away, but hopefully it gives a little insight of how slow-playing War Story fits perfectly into my schedule.

I love the unusual way you are playing these games making them last. The only concern I would have is forgetting where I left off -- I wonder if you keep detailed notes. I think you would enjoy the play-by-mail games which force you to make only one move per week. They are some of my favorites. -jesse ps. how are you liking ISS Vanguard? I have it but I have not played it.
@JimmyPattaya
@JimmyPattaya 4 күн бұрын
@@COOPFORTWO I keep detailed notes only for Sherlock Holmes, the Suspects series (Claire Harper mysteries) and other more complex deduction games. For optimum enjoyment, I do maintain detailed performance statistics on each NFL and PGA player in my tournaments and keep logs/notebooks for a more meaningful experience in Fallen Lands, Terraforming Mars, Tournament Fishing and ISS Vanguard. I absolutely adore both the planetary exploration and the ship log maintenance aspects of ISS Vanguard. My current exploration of the planet Everstorm has been so enjoyable that I devoted a full hour to it yesterday (which is double my usual allotment) and I'm chomping at the bit to play it again today.. I ranked it #7 in the 2024 People's Choice List of Solo Games that I submitted this year. Just the base game is a mammoth Campaign though that will take me hundreds of hours to complete at my current pace. I love it so much that I decided to buy the 2 expansions for it from Amazon while it's still available. I would be very interested in watching you do a video of one of the planetary explorations, but I think the rules would be too complex for your audience who are not familiar with the game. For War Story, I have no trouble remembering where I left off since I write down all the log numbers in the Mission Book. Even when I'm not actually playing the game (such as when I'm taking my daily walk), I mull over the current situation in the mission ---- trying to make my best decision to move the story forward. I try to remember every little detail to give me the advantage that you mentioned in your video. I've never watched a single one of your play-by-mail videos but it does sound like fun. I guess it's because I'm reluctant to join in half way through, and don't follow closely enough when a new one is starting.

It's not going to be for everyone, but we again had a bunch of thoughtful enjoyable puzzles in this box, along with a creepy dark story that reminds me of an occult graphic novel. quick spoiler-free mini-review: We really took our time playing this because there were so many times where we had to work to understand and explain some fact, or to make an intelligent decisions. And I had so much fun talking through theories and hypothesizing about possibilities. The art is beautiful, the mechanics are more elaborate than in the previous box, with a very well implemented mechanic that lets you ask people about things. We had some great ah ha moments. Overall a real joy playing this, and I was extremely impressed. You absolutely have to take this game very seriously or you may miss too much and have a bad time. I can't guarantee everyone will love it, there are people who might be frustrated by parts, especially if you are the type where the ending solution will make or break a case. Take it seriously, take your time, play it over multiple sessions. Give it the respect it deserves, and enjoy the journey. Can't wait to play a third box. -jesse

Always fun with some real adult stories. I agree with Jesse that it was very clever to have the main character a schizophrenic, so the puzzles can be viewed as logical from her point of view and not so random and out of place as they almost always are in these types of games! The playthrough was a real culture clash. 😄Americans having problems with European date and address formatting, as well as unfamiliarity with common soap dispenser designs. lol I don't think the puzzle you complained about was broken. It was just hard. Perhaps it was another cultural issue with regards to how the sun moves depending on your location, but you're told the game takes place in Denmark. (Not Holland as Jesse kept saying. heh)

Broken might not be the best term, but it was a puzzle that was certain to be frustrating and fragile, with too many ambiguous moving parts. This could have been made into a fun puzzle -- it was a missed opportunity.

Quick spoiler-free mini-review: I was very pleasantly surprised by this first box of 50 clues. It was dark (as advertised), There were some good subtle puzzles here (and 1 real clunker). The story was entertaining, and moved along at a brisk pace. There's a real horror vision here, which is unusual and welcome. The website worked perfectly, and has a great interface, with easy access to nice hints. The scoring system works great to keep you from just randomly guessing. The object interaction stuff is fun. The art -- this may be subjective -- but i LOVED it. Perfectly suited to a graphic novel dark creepy vibe. Try to go in with low expectations and you may really enjoy it like I did. The ending of this box was anti-climactic but that may be because you need to continue the trilogy to get a proper ending. We'll see... -jesse

Hey Jesse, I love the new format. The Post Mortem series by Mysterious Package Company seems to have gotten a revamp. They have new cover images and more importantly, the price is only half of what it previously was. From what I can remember about your review, the price was one of the main downsides of the game. I can’t really tell if the content of the box is the same, even after the drastic price drop. Thought this might be interesting for the next episode.

Congratulations to you, Jesse, and your team for your successful Mission! I was excited to watch all 3+ hours of your video over a 2 day period. I had just completed my own Mission 1 with mixed results --- full success on Objective 1 with 3 injured agents and 1 healthy Agent plus 6 maquisards surviving. I failed Objective 2. At least none of my Agents died or were mortally wounded or missing in action. I had entered France by boat. I was happy that in your new replay you selected entering by paradrop as an experimental simulation to see how different it would be. I certainly didn't expect to see an entirely new adventure unfold from choosing this 2nd option. On the one hand, it made watching your video much more exciting because I had no idea what would happen. However, on the other hand, I felt somewhat disappointed and cheated that so many new narrative sections had been added to Mission 1 that I would never get to experience. Even if you had never made this video and I knew ahead of time that there was a whole new branching alternative to explore, I definitely would have chosen not to play the paradrop scenario myself. My desire is to go through the 3 Missions in War Story only once and do the best that I possibly can in achieving the objectives required. To do otherwise is to sacrifice the sense of urgency and realism that this game creates IMHO. Instead of rolling 2 games into one to maximize replay value, I would have much preferred if the designers had given me twice the paragraphs in the narrative book for me to discover and experience in my single run-through. I enjoy War Story very much and feel enthusiastic about proceeding to Mission 2. I'm not sure if I should watch your overall review of the game now or when I've completed all 3 Missions. Usually you don't put any spoilers into your reviews, but I want to maintain the element of surprise as much as possible as I progress further. Heikki (aka Jimmy Pattaya)

Here's one general lesson that I think we keep learning over and over again: It is very enjoyable in these SHCD-style cases to have a VARIETY of lead lengths and tones, and for a narrative game an occasional VERY LONG lead can feel like a real reward. Moreover, the scene of the crime is a place where we always enjoy having a big long lead with lots to chew on.
