Make sure that you always take up the offers of counseling after difficult or tragic calls. People are often quick to put a brave face on, say they are fine, and push their problems down. @@damionlee7658 Yeah I was going to say the same thing as you - my brother is a paramedic, and although he’s a very stoic person, a lot of sh*t can happen that is genuinely just not in your control. I remember one time him coming home for a weekend and just breaking down, because he didn’t feel as though he was making a meaningful enough impact, and that ‘people die anyway regardless of what I do’. My mum and I convinced him to go to the NHS counselling service, which specialises in counselling for NHS workers, and he says that it’s the best decision he ever made. What people have to face and deal with in jobs like paramedics / firemen / nurses / doctors can often be completely overwhelming and devastating, but there is help out there to help you to deal with those emotions, and it’s important to take it.
