Looks to me like I wouldn't have to remove the "drive pinion shaft" from the "driven shaft" if all I need to do is replace "second driven gear." Does that sound correct to you? It's just the synchro teeth on the driven gear itself that are slightly mangled in my transmission. Could also be the teeth on the inside of the "reverse driven gear," if I'm not mistaken. I believe this gear is a single piece, whose inside splines are what make contact with the teeth which are part of each selected gear, after being dragged across the baulk assemblies.
@vdubjunkie Жыл бұрын
No, wait. After a better look at the exploded diagram, it seems it's not part of "reverse driven gear", but the "1st-2nd synchronizer hub" which actually makes contact with the smaller `select` teeth on the driven gears, 1 and 2.

My ‘97 Outback Sport 5mt will only go into first gear with sometimes a grind. When in neutral the lever won’t really move over to the right, like it’s stuck. Does that sound like a trans or clutch issue?
@SWSpeedCo2 ай бұрын
Could be a transmission issue but before you commit to that I would inspect the shift linkages and make sure nothing is wrong with those because if something came disconnected it could keep the shifter from moving like you said.

I'm pretty sure it is just the sound of the center diff gear noise. From what I understand it's normal, and if you mess around with tire pressure front and rear you can get it to be quieter

Hey, my 09 outback transmission is starting to make a clicking sound under load only, (no it’s not the axles, I replaced them). It sounds kinda like putting a stick in a bicycle spoke sound. Any idea what that could be? I’m thinking a bearing internally,,,,, it only makes the sound while accelerating, and goes away if you push the clutch or let off the gas,,,,,
@SWSpeedCo7 ай бұрын
Yeah I'm not sure what that would be, I would guess it might be something internal on the transmission but idk what exactly
@jeffflowers7292 жыл бұрын
Same problem for me as Pandawatch below. I recently replaced the input shaft on my 08 wrx with another complete shaft from a 2014. My first gear stripped. Looks like your third gear. I kept my output shaft as is. It had no damage and I wanted to keep the same shims so it fit the pinion gear. Day one everything was fine. Next day I have a deceleration whine coasting in first gear. The slightest touch of the pedal and it goes away. Tire pressure didn't fix it. Any idea what other gremlins snuck in overnight to cause the whine? has about 200 miles on it now. I used 80w-90 but should be fine for now in the 90 weather we've been having. Also, around 26:15 I didn't see you put sealer around the two bolt holes that go through the center of the case. It cuts to you putting the case back together so maybe just got edited out.
@SWSpeedCo2 жыл бұрын
Not sure of what else would cause that unless some other parts have play in the transmission. The two bolts that go through the center I put sealant on I just got edited out.

@SWSpeedCo Жыл бұрын
5th gear has a woodruff key and some amount of friction fit so you need to find a way to clamp onto it and press it off, I would probably use a bearing separator which might be able to take it off on its own but if not you can just get it tight and then press it off

@SWSpeedCo Жыл бұрын
The dealer is your only bet for sourcing the parts. Whining on decel is normal but not on acceleration. If I had to guess I would say one ir multiple bearings are probably in need of replacement. Not 100% sure on that but it's the only thing I can think of that would cause 5th gear to wine loud.

@maxbolamperti9550 Жыл бұрын
@@SWSpeedCo only on accel and decel, it’s not a grinding noise just a whine, sounds like a race transmission, and it’s only in first and second gear, very faint in third and every gear after, can barely hear it

Yeah so the first and second gears have a closer gear angle to straight cut gears than helical gears. They are still helical but since the angle of the teeth is less steep they are noisier. But yes that's normal.

There is a special tool that Subaru recommends for measuring backlash. I didn't want to buy one or make one so I just used gear alignment paint to make sure that the front differential gears were meshing properly based on the pattern.

Yup.. this is one of those jobs that’s better to leave for the pros, not saying it’s not doable, but definitely not like putting together an engine. The amount of little parts, gears, bearings, pressure seals, one must have and the proper orientation and the specialty tools needed to place the parts correctly so the transmission works properly again is enough to leave this job for the pros. Great work on you at least opening it and trying it, have a better understanding of how things go/work. Thanks for the video. Edit: this was a cool video I found. I do love how people criticize the stock motors and transmissions in WRX/STi. I've tripled the power output, and something failed. What a piece of junk!! Maybe you need to learn some more stuff before applying criticism to mechanical components! Mind you, I'm not saying this to you, specifically. You were just referencing the term others use. It just always makes me when I hear it.
@SWSpeedCo Жыл бұрын
I 100% agree with you. I think alot of the criticism now a days is because alot of German cars are overbuilt and can make lots more power with a tune and minor bolt ons, where as subarus you have to replace everything to make more power. That being said I have a friend with an audi s4 making the same power as me and he probably has 70k into the car and I only have like 30k into mine even though the only thing left original is the body lol.
