Just good tires. My 99 4Runner with Falken at3 would have been a Sunday walk in the park. Driver knowledge and ability plays a big part. 9" of snow ? Child's play with 4Runner had mine for 20 years 210,00 miles never stuck, stranded or dissiponted in her. Plan on keeping my T4R till I die then handing her down to kids who are waiting for me to die so they can have my cars lol. A 97 320,000 miles a 99 210,000 miles. And they ain't no pavement princess's or mall crawlers and still run and look great!

P.J Absolutely correct. Proper winter tires will throw a bit more snow and stay softer in the cold, but there’s little that you can do for traction when your body is floating on a lift of snow and you can’t get any weight on those tires. Still impressed by the performance though.

And the tires are the difference here. My highlander has done much more than this in the snow and at ORV parks. All these guys that do crazy comparisons have regret. The Subaru is much much cheaper. Even a used truck or suv, they would be happier with. I didn’t research and really think I’d want to go on trails since I was driving a car in the city for decades. I got a highlander and I could drive up curbs and other things easily. I soon went to other places and found out I had Awd but open differentials. The the research started and I learned how it all works and I should have gotten an4 runner (my brother got a 4Runner a few days before me) or a Jeep or true four wheel drive. But it was too late. I’ll never try to compare to to a 4x4 because I’m not desperate or stupid. Ground clearance is real thing and larger tires. The Subaru can never ever have that.

Get good winter tires mounted on cheap steel wheels one inch smaller diameter and narrower. Ask your tire dealer for their recommendations for your car. Nokian Haakapalittas, Bridgestone Blizzaks are excellent, I went with Continental Viking Contact and they have been amazing.
@ttthr333 жыл бұрын
Check your owner’s manual to be sure, but snow chains are not recommended on most Subarus. I drove through snow and icy roads last winter on the factory tires without an issue. Had to go through a road where snow chains or all-terrain tires were required. I ended up putting the chains on to avoid being fined and found out the hard way why my Crosstrek can’t have snow chains. When I drove, the chain would bang on the wheel well. I ended up taking them off cause the sound hurt me to hear. Got to the snow chain check point and they let me through. They looked at my wheels and said my Subaru didn’t need chains. I’m due for new tires soon. Even though I’m confident in the factory tires as I experienced no issues at all, I will probably get all-terrain tires for extra reassurance and better deep snow performance before heading up the mountains this winter.

I was the only employee to get to work on time, and I cleared the driveway in the evening, just to please my neighbors not because I needed to. At least a half dozen of my neighbors have bought Subarus after witnessing the ease that I have had plowing through snow. It's been my experience (over 50 years) that the vehicles that I see most in the ditch are 4 X 4 pickup trucks who had just recently flew past me because I had been driving sensibly according to the conditions. And i suppose that wasn't fast enough for them. This has been MY expetience,my brotha.
