Real life extreme winter conditions for the Subaru CROSSTREK Wilderness - not a Subaru designed test course. Is it safe and how does it handle the ice and snow? Will I make it up my long steep snow covered driveway!

I'm an ex-Jeep Wrangler owner who finally had it with the endless, bottomless pit of repairs that inherently comes with Jeep and got myself a '24 Crosstrek Limited. One impressive feature of the Crosstrek is being able to take corners on snow and ice without it losing the back end. I get double the gas mileage too! Absolutely love it, never going back to Jeep.

I believe I had the 2012 crosstrek before. I had to turn the traction control off (vdc?-I’m getting old😅) to get the back end to slide so I can easily drift! Even still, the electronic Nannies will interfere once you start to drift! 😅

I just bought a 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness that the wife uses. It replaces a 2017 Toyota Prius. The Crosstrek drives like a tank in comparison. Unbelievable performance. Took it down a road with about 4-5 inches of snow and kicked the back end out easily to do powerslides around corners. It crushes everything. 10/10. If it turns out to be reliable, I will be a Subaru convert for sure.

I absolutely love my Subaru in every way! I have the Crosstrek and an F-250 7.3 Deisel and I have anything that requires a vehicle totally covered! I really haven’t been in a situation that truly required X mode because it has handled 6” of snow on top of 1/2” of ice more than a few times with ease. There was a Sherriff on the side of the road and I stopped because GPS wasn’t working and I was lost in a snow/ice storm and he was furious because he thought that I was going to add to the accident problem 😂 I just hopped in and took off like it was just rainy and he couldn’t believe it! He drove to the place that I had asked for directions to and I was there in the parking lot and he looked the car over inside and out and decided he was going to buy one! He couldn’t believe I was able to just drive off in those conditions

I bought a 2023 Forester wilderness, already have 41,317 miles on it. I joined a non class specific 4/4 club so I could find out how my car handled in different conditions and get used to the suspension without the jeep drivers looking down their noses at me. When we were airing down our tires everyone was asking if I was sure I wanted to take my car. I told them yes I wanted to see what it would do while I had a lot of help if I needed it. I didn't need help and only had to put it in snow/dirt mode a couple times climbing over rocks or going through water holes. I actually did better than some of those vehicles jeep was stupid enough to put their name on to give people false confidence in. As we were airing back up everyone was impressed with how my car did and welcoming me to the club. Still don't know how it will do in the deep snow/mud mode.

Thank you so much Claus for this informative video about a car that I actually own. I completely agree with your remark on winter tires. I ran my car with the stock tires and it was OK, but not great. In my opinion, the stock tires that come with the Crosstrek wilderness’ are more for show than for winter. I installed studded winter tires and it just walks through everything, so far lol. The winter tires made all the difference 😊. Canada.

The Crosstrek is too small for our needs, but we LOVE our Outback (it’s my wife’s car, but our road car). It’s just an Outback Premium. I asked her if she wanted leather interior but she didn’t… well a couple of months after I bought it for her 50th birthday gift, she came to me and said that she wished that I would have bought the Limited for the leather interior. I’m thinking about having Katzkin make 2 tone leather seats for her, (Tan and dark brown) to match her Cinnamon Brown Pearl paint. She currently has Ivory cloth interior.

My dealer rep told me to use the snow/dirt setting in X-Mode unless you're feeling like you're going to get stuck. I bought a 24 Crosstrek Sport and immediately put a set of Falken Wild Peak A/T Trail tires on. We had a snow/ice storm a couple weeks ago and the Crosstrek was amazing. I drove around stalled out 4WD trucks on a few different hills like it was nothing.

I've had the very same Falken tires for two years. I bought it for dirt and mud, and I was a bit sceptic about it in deep snow. I could hardly stand not to change back my dedicated snow tires. But after the first winter I never looked back. These tires are probably the best for a crosstrek. By the way I got the same advice about XMode and it turns out, I never activate it, not in mud, not in 10-15cm fresh snow. I wonder what terrible road will I need to use it.

Good video. All your comments regarding other 4 x 4 systems were spot on. Having has 4 x 4 trucks with diff lockers etc. the dreaded understeer issue is all too obvious. Subbies avoid all that with a really intelligent system. I have a 21 XV (Crosstrek) and it's really good in the slippery stuff. It also revs quite high, but the engine snarl actually sounds quite good IMHO and you can tell how hard it's working. The only fault I can find with the system is that the CVT is reluctant to change down and tries to use the torque for best economy. This is mainly noticeable going up inclines, so a flick into manual mode and ratio drop soon fixes that. I also drove the Forester before buying and it felt like a barge compared to the almost neutral handling smaller XV. XV is definitely more fun to drive. Cheers Rob
@clauskellermanpov3004

Thanks Rob, I've got to agree with you. The XV is more nimble than the Forester. The Outback has great low end torque and climbs easily

About 18 cm's thick snow Claus..... Fun man !! I did drive a Nekaf in military, was 4-wheeldrive, high and low gearing and double-clutch, very good tire profiles; very handy off road in wilderness and mud, worked very well ! ! On the road I drove on two wheels in sharp bends, lot of fun !! Well in wintertime, the sides were open as well as the rear and windshieldwipers on aircraft, so didn't work in gales....... pretty cold.....So Claus, try the same (or in maybe Landrover or Jeep ?) in those conditions...(Subaru ? The Subaru AWD system is 60/40 split, so it is also front wheel biased. Also with 4wd no one locks their diffs (if equipped) in snow/ice. If you’re driving in normal snow and ice you want your diffs open and your transfer case locked. The only time you’d lock your diffs is if you’re stuck in deep snow. You’d only use it to try and get out.
@clauskellermanpov3004
@clauskellermanpov3004 23 күн бұрын
Dude 60/40 is as close to 50/50 than any other system. It is NOT front wheel biased. If you drive a "front wheel biased" car you can feel how it slips and drifts on poor roads.

Your description of other brands AWD is exactly how Subaru's AWD system works. Outside of their sports cars like the WRX, Subaru's AWD send 80-90% of the power to the front wheels, until it senses it needs more power to the rear. At that point is when Subaru's system send more power to the rear, usually up to either 40 to 50% of power. Other brands usually, expect for systems like Audi Quattro or BMW X-Drive generally only sends power to the fronts and nothing to the rear, but when it feels slippage, then it sends up to 50% of the power to the rear. BMW xDrive and Audi Quattro is similar to the Subaru's WRX's AWD setup, in the way it works. Usually being rear wheel bias, instead of front wheel bias like the normal Subarus and most other's AWD setup. BTW, I'm not sure how Mazda's system currently works, but at one point, their AWD setup was sending power to both front and rear until it got up to either 30 or 40 mph, at which point, it would cut the power to the rear. The reason most AWD systems are FWD bias is for better fuel economy.

I've owned and driven 4WD's in winter for over a half-century. 4WD pickups are actually not very good in snow and ice conditions IF they do not have a decent amount of weight in the back. In winter, I usually carried 400-500 lbs. of Tube Sand in bags loaded in the bed of the pickup behind the rear wheel wells. A rear locking differential does improve traction considerably but will tend to "step out" under very icy conditions. A front locker can improve traction, but it also tends to drive the vehicle in a straight line under slick conditions even when the wheels are turned--the 4WD will go, but not necessarily go where you steer it. A conventional part-time 4WD works well going uphill on snowpacked and icy roads, but it does not necessarily work well when driving downgrade on very slick roads. In those conditions, I shift back into 2WD (rear wheel drive) so that only the back wheels are dragging when descending a grade. My best 4WD vehicle in snow and ice is an older Jeep with the "Selec-trac" transfer case that has the option of 2WD, full-time 4WD (basically AWD), part-time 4WD, and part-time 4WD low range. That gives me an option for almost every driving condition. I'm considering getting a Subaru for my next vehicle. However, I now live in an area where icy and snowpacked roads only occur a few times each winter at most, compared to where I lived for a number of years where winter road conditions prevailed for 4 months or more every winter.

The idea of the rear camera spray is to clear dirt as the rear of the car gets dirty due to aerodynamics,. Virtually every hatchback is fitted with a rear wash/wiper for the same reason.

I’ve had 4 Acuras with SH-AWD, and when driving in the snow/on the roads they’re absolutely the equivalent of Subaru. I’ve also owned 6 Subarus that have been great as well, so definitely have something to compare to. With that being said the deepest snow I’ve ever driven in was 12” unplowed and my Legacy GT handled it superbly.

The Subaru dealer told me not to air down under 15 psi. The factory rims don't have a back lip and you could unseat the tire. I run the Yokohama geolander ats on all my rigs and these thing come to life when you get aired down. My cherrokee at 6 psi is unstoppable. 20 is good for this rig. A 100 dollar cheap air compressor and your in business. It's a lite weight rig different rims these tires under 10 psi you couldn't stop it. I grew up and live along the Canadian border I know snow wheeling. Play with the air psi with different types of snow. Low air and a heavy skinny peddle don't mix. Hope some of this helps.

I have Michelin X-Ice Snow on my Forester SG (was ready to buy Outback Wilderness from USA but war has come... So, not good time to update a good car to better one). This hill is kids' hill for them :) Even my wife will not be scared to drive here on these tires. If it will be slip and wet ice... Well, better to have latest X-Ice North, but Snow also fine. But I will put chains on wheels to brake it down for other cars. My Forester AWD has 95% front and 5% rear by default and can put up to 45% on rear wheels. Different transmition variants on some turbo SGs have rear main, and they are more for fun and winter drifting. But the best thing about Subaru AWD is that it will send this tork smoothly, without any surprises when you already have troubles and at this moment rear wheels wake up to kill you. PS: You are good man, but people also want to see cars. More cars less face. A little bit. Not only cars :) Especially I've came here to watch Outback Wilderness it real conditions.

i think that 4900 rpm full torque figure is at wide open throttle. chances are you wont need to climb a hill at full throttle, so the traction control system should keep engine rpm low enough to keep peak toque for the *demand* at whatever rpm achieves that goal. im typing as i watch, and i predict the system wont need 5000 rpm to climb the hill, nor will it let the wheelspin get that far out of control that the engine will hit that high an rpm. if all 4 wheels have grip, the cvt should hold the engine at peak torque on wide open throttle.

@@clauskellermanpov3004 on full throttle? My 16 crosstrek with snow tires climbs like a champ at about half throttle with just enough wheelspin to keep the snow caked in the tires. Id be curious if your behaves the same with a grippier set of tires. Im on goodyear winter commands in a 225/50/17 (i think) ill check the size tomorrow. Ive had them on 3 years now and they wear very nicely with only a hint of road noise

Hey! Awesome, fun video! I’m seriously considering replacing my 2014 Audi all road with either a Crosstrek or Outback. Any thoughts/experiences with Audi Quattro? Especially the original, actual full-time and (like Subaru’s ) vs. the newer “Quattro U,tea”/
@clauskellermanpov3004

I owned an A4 full AWD when they had the big engine, then they switched to a 1.8 liter turbo which had poor durability issues. I owned an All Road for 6 months and the air bag lifting lowering system failed. My friend owned and S4 and was told he needed all the gaskets in his engine changed after 40,000 km for $12,000. Now the new quattro isn't full time AWD. And the price of all their cars has doubled. lol So Audi is not high n my favorite list.
