I had a 1987 Subaru Legacy with less than 60K miles. One day when my wife started the engine, a giant white cloud blew out of the exhaust. She turned off the engine and I checked the oil dipstick: Only oil with no coolant, but definitely a blown head gasket. It could have been worse, but repair was expensive. After this was repaired, it broke a timing belt. It had two and that 1.8 engine was non-interference. Again, it could have been worse, but repair was expensive. The tow truck owner loved me. Hmmm......

"Avoid the car if you see blue smoke coming from the exhaust or the hood, especially when the engine is running" If you see blue smoke coming from the car when it's turned off, you shouldn't worry as much? Lmao

Or if you see blue smoke coming from any car, at least if it's coming from the exhaust, you likely have blown oil rings. New engine is the usual fix.
