Great video!! I have 2005 Forester 2.5x MT and the car doesn't have a rough idle but when accelerating it bogs and loses power. The more gas I give it the more it stutters and bogs and sometimes it turns off. There are no check engine lights on. I also have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, cleaned the throttle body (watched the video you posted on the throttle body cleaning) and tried this idle relearn procedure but its still doing the same thing. What can it be? Where do I go from here?

1. turn off all lights and accessories (no A/C, lights, blower, radio, etc.) 2. disconnect battery for 30 min (now is opportunity to clean terminals, check ground, clean throttle body) 3. re-connect battery 4. turn key to ON position for 15 seconds (throttle body has a chance to go through a check sweep during this period; do not let engine turn over) 5. start car and let it idle without any load (no A/C, lights, blower, radio, etc.) 6. leave engine running for 10 minutes, never loading, never touching accelerator 7. turn off engine and leave key in off position at least 20 seconds 8. turn key back to the ON position for 15 seconds without starting engine 9. start engine and leave idling for 5 minutes without loading or touching accelerator 10. turn off engine and wait 20 seconds before restarting DONE! Test drive!

You saved my @$$! Had MAJOR shoulder surgery Wednesday. Saturday wife calls from the road. 2007 Forester died. Told her to get a jump, have Autozone put in new battery so she did. As she drove away, car died again. Autozone said the alternator was bad. She got it home and I found out, on my own, the alternator can be changed with one hand. Car still died. MAF spotless. Found this video. Followed it to the letter and the car runs like a champ! You have no idea how thankful I am. You really helped me out in a time of need. Thank you again.

Hi Mr. Subaru, I'm so grateful for this video. I'm a 60 yr old woman. I really need to watch all your videos because I own a couple of Subaru's since they are so perfect for driving in the mountains where there is snow and where I live. I have a 2016 Subaru Forester and I noticed at a cold start it would have these popping noises as it would warm up for a few minutes and those popping noises got worse. I found a very very dirty air filter and I replaced it with a new one. I did disconnect the battery when I did that. Not sure why but I did. Just the negative post. So the popping noise went away but started to come back as I drove it and now at idle, at a stop sign, the rpm's would drop so bad the car wanted to die. The car has 130,000 miles and the first thing I thought of was, well since the MAF sensor is where the air filter is, maybe the MAF sensor needs to be cleaned. So your videos popped up when I was looking for anything Subaru Idle issues on KZbin. I saw the one about the throttle body and also this one "Idle Relearn" so I thought "Don't touch anything. Do the relearn first. So I followed it and completed it per your instructions and it fixed it. I was so happy. Thank you so much. I never even knew there was such a thing as an idle relearn. You are a great teacher. Thank you so much. Diana

Your channel is a terrific resource for Subaru owners! This video is a very useful detailed tutorial, and essential viewing for anyone who wants to save money by changing their own battery! One other procedure needed after disconnecting battery in many Subaru models is to relearn the power window settings, which also get messed up. The steps for this can be found in your owner's manual.

Like all these other folks, this procedure worked, amazingly enough. I cleaned my battery cables a couple weeks ago and when I put them back on I couldn't get the car to idle. It died every time. I thought it might be crud in the gas tank but that didn't work. I finally consulted Google and found this video. I thought, no way can it be this simple. Well it is. Had my oil changed at the Subaru dealer yesterday, and Dealer says I need to clean my injectors (They wanted $170 to clean injectors) as it was running rough at idle( around 600 rpm). I followed this procedure, and idle with A/C on is now stable at abour 750 rpm with AC on, and NOT a rough idle! This is on a 2015 Crosstrek with ~35K miles. I knew something was fishy since the idle speed was so low with A/C on. Searching here turned up this procedure, so thank you for documenting this!

I had to do this on my daughters' '05 Outback. Somebody (probably me) left the dome light on and ran the battery down. To make matters worse, in the process of checking the air filter I pulled the air boot part way off the air box so when we jumped it, it ran like crap. Did the training procedure 3 times before I got it right. Should be a pro at it now! As always, thanks for the video.

I had the battery in my 2016 Legacy go bad and then noticed if I started the car after it was warmed up it did not want to idle. I also have been noticing that when I come to a stop the engine would come down to 500 rpms then bounce back up like the torque converter lock out was getting sluggish. Tried the relearn but the engine would not idle on the second start. I read the comments here and tore into the throttle body. Removed it and it was plenty dirty. Cleaned up and tried the relearn again. Complete success! This also cleared up my idle dip when I came to a stop. A great channel! We got 4 Subarus in the family and we love them. They handle the Nebraska winters here very well.

My old battery died while I was on vacation. When I replaced the battery my idle was pretty rough. It wasn't dying at stop signs, but I was worried it might. Very useful for my Impreza 2013. This procedure corrected a too fast idle issue especially on D speed since I went to the garage for a recall for valve springs replacement. The garage employee didn’t believe (what I perceived) that this problem began after the spring replacement and suggested a throttle body cleaning, which I refused.

Prior to this video, I had put a new front catalytic converter on my Subaru 2008 on me to suddenly get a rough idle after installing it I was like extremely bummed out. I figured the catalytic converter would probably fix a solution only for me to get a rough idle after watching the video and doing all the procedures I am I am completely satisfied with the results, and my car now runs has a smooth idle, no roughness to it and is extremely sensitive in a good way so if any viewers that are watching the video and are skeptical, don’t be this procedure. I don't usually comment on help videos, I usually leave a like and be on my way, but I'm commenting to help your algorithm. This was a last resort for the "free way" to fix my problem. It would stutter hard coming to a stop or turning the wheel when stopped at a light. Even would stutter for no reason with no load. I didn't think this would help, but after cleaning the throttle body, EGR valve, and doing this procedure, it runs perfectly! Some stutter when I have a heavy load and turning the wheel, but that's to be expected. I appreciate the video! 2012 Legacy 6MT for reference.

It would idle down only if you shifted into neutral or press the brake. It drove me nuts especially driving in traffic with all the stop and go. It eventually went away so it must have relearned itself. I bet this video would have been very useful. Interestingly enough this happened after throttle body cleaning. Regular idle was fine. Hello from St Thomas in the Caribbean. I am almost through all of your videos. Truly amazing work. I have a 1999 Forester and it’s perfect for down here. Hard to get repairs done so I have had to learn myself. I realize you probably have tons of requests for advice. We do not have a dealership here or even a qualified mechanic to do the work. If you have time I have an intermittent idle issue. Rungs great for a while then all of the sudden it will almost stall 6 or 7 times in a row and then run great again. When the ac is on and I turn it off the rpms drop like it wants to stall and then levels off again. New spark plugs, MAF, PCV valve, air filters. Have pulled the IAC and cleaned and put back but I just can’t seem to get it running right. Car runs great under power. Checked for vacuum leaks as well. Also a ton of forums

Thanks for this video. I Recently replaced spark plugs on my 2010 Subaru Forester and then was having idling issues, the engine would stall out at a stop. This procedure fix the problem thanks again.

I have a 2000 Subaru Legacy wagon with 230,000 miles and still runs great thanks to your channel. However, recently when I start it, it will immediately rev up to 3000 rpm then drops down to 1750 for a few seconds then 1500 and hangs there for a while. Once I drive around for a bit and stop it idles normally. What’s going on here?

If you ever re-make this video, it might be a good idea to mention that the windows may need to re-learn too. Fortunately I already knew about that, though I had forgotten until I went to adjust the front-passenger window from the driver-side controls. I could see that some folks might panic and think their window is broken... as I did until I remembered 😆 Maybe add a mention as a pinned comment or to the video description? As always, I appreciate what you do!

So when that day comes for me to do it on my 2019 the same procedure basically apply? Say if I have to replace the battery etc.? Thanks for making these videos I have learned a lot I’ve had a 2013 crosstrek, 2015 crosstrek hybrid (don’t recommend that one!) and now our current 2019 outback love it! Again thank you for taking the time to make these videos!

After a headgasket job on a 11’ WRX I couldn’t get the CEL out. I forgot to do this process. Reason for the light was, i did not wait the 10sec for the throttle body sweep. Did the proper relearn as this shows and bam, no CEL. The computers are THAT picky.
