Great video!! I have 2005 Forester 2.5x MT and the car doesn't have a rough idle but when accelerating it bogs and loses power. The more gas I give it the more it stutters and bogs and sometimes it turns off. There are no check engine lights on. I also have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, cleaned the throttle body (watched the video you posted on the throttle body cleaning) and tried this idle relearn procedure but its still doing the same thing. What can it be? Where do I go from here?

1. turn off all lights and accessories (no A/C, lights, blower, radio, etc.) 2. disconnect battery for 30 min (now is opportunity to clean terminals, check ground, clean throttle body) 3. re-connect battery 4. turn key to ON position for 15 seconds (throttle body has a chance to go through a check sweep during this period; do not let engine turn over) 5. start car and let it idle without any load (no A/C, lights, blower, radio, etc.) 6. leave engine running for 10 minutes, never loading, never touching accelerator 7. turn off engine and leave key in off position at least 20 seconds 8. turn key back to the ON position for 15 seconds without starting engine 9. start engine and leave idling for 5 minutes without loading or touching accelerator 10. turn off engine and wait 20 seconds before restarting DONE! You saved my @$$! Had MAJOR shoulder surgery Wednesday. Saturday wife calls from the road. 2007 Forester died. Told her to get a jump, have Autozone put in new battery so she did. As she drove away, car died again. Autozone said the alternator was bad. She got it home and I found out, on my own, the alternator can be changed with one hand. Car still died. MAF spotless. Found this video. Followed it to the letter and the car runs like a champ! You have no idea how thankful I am. You really helped me out in a time of need. Thank you again.

Hi Mr. Subaru, I'm so grateful for this video. I'm a 60 yr old woman. I really need to watch all your videos because I own a couple of Subaru's since they are so perfect for driving in the mountains where there is snow and where I live. I have a 2016 Subaru Forester and I noticed at a cold start it would have these popping noises as it would warm up for a few minutes and those popping noises got worse. I found a very very dirty air filter and I replaced it with a new one. I did disconnect the battery when I did that. Not sure why but I did. Just the negative post. So the popping noise went away but started to come back as I drove it and now at idle, at a stop sign, the rpm's would drop so bad the car wanted to die. The car has 130,000 miles and the first thing I thought of was, well since the MAF sensor is where the air filter is, maybe the MAF sensor needs to be cleaned. So your videos popped up when I was looking for anything Subaru Idle issues on KZbin. I saw the one about the throttle body and also this one "Idle Relearn" so I thought "Don't touch anything. Do the relearn first. So I followed it and completed it per your instructions and it fixed it. I was so happy. Thank you so much. I never even knew there was such a thing as an idle relearn. You are a great teacher. Thank you so much. Diana

Do you start the procedure with warm engine or cold? Thanks
@zackstaa78262 жыл бұрын
Cold engine. All modern cars idle high when they’re cold, but Subarus do something called a “stratified start”. It basically uses a secondary air pump, lowered ignition timing, and high rpm to force and recirculate hot air through the exhaust valves to the catalyst as quickly as possible while not running too lean. Thats why a proper idle relearn procedure is important for Subarus, there’s a lot going on.

@8:35 you described the exact "issue" that I've had with a used Subaru I just bought. I'm guessing the previous owners never did an idle relearn when they replaced the original battery. I can almost guarantee they traded it in because they had issues with it afterward.
@Apocalypse41623 жыл бұрын
This this the same procedure for if you physically removed your TPS and then reinstalled it? I stupidly did this and now my 2003 Impreza 2.5 idles high, rougher and has flashing AT oil temp light and solid check engine light all of a sudden.
@Apocalypse41622 жыл бұрын
Update: I purchased a digital multimeter and set the TPS loosely in its place and slowly turned it until it hit the magic number, then immediately tightened the screws. Unplugged the battery and pumped the brakes. Within one or two start ups, all the dash lights automatically went away and the cars performance was back to normal. Seemed intimidating at first but was quite simple really.

Very useful for my Impreza 2013. This procedure corrected a too fast idle issue especially on D speed since I went to the garage for a recall for valve springs replacement. My 2013 impreza sedan had been sitting in the garage for weeks due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The battery lost power so the engine wouldn't start. I went ahead and connected a battery charger to it and the engine started just fine. I began warming up the engine daily to avoid the same battery problem. Ever since, I noticed an iddle issue at very low rpm without the car running, simply sitting in thr garage and in parking gear. I never did anything about it until I run the car for the first time about 2 weeks later. Immediately I noticed the rpm drop to 300-400 when in drive gear and when I changed to reverse gear the engine stalled and shut off like MT cars , but mine is AT. I got scared, AC was off, lights were off (11am), what do I do?. I started the engine again and had to use the gas pedal to accelerate the rpm to not stall again. I thought I needed to take it to get an ECU scan or any other expensive labor, but I found this video, followed it step it step and Holy idle fix batman! It worked perfectly. 👌👍 Note: If you live in a hot place like me, try it with the windows down so you don't swet like Patrick Ewing in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Bulls 😉

The car was surging going up hills in 5 gear with the A/C on, cleaned the throttle body(god it was bad), she says it runs like a champ now. Thanks for such an informative channel!!!

You say leave everything off, no load... will it mess things up when the electric radiator cooling fans come on? My engine cannot run for 10 minutes without the fans coming on.

Does this (disconnecting the battery for so long) affect other learned procedures? I just had my transmission fluid exchanged (CVT) and they supposedly performed an A/T relearn which I wouldn't want to lose because of disconnecting the battery

My headlights come on automatically even on the off position. Hopefully that doesn't mess with the reset procedure?

Do I need to disable the daytime running lights before doing this procedure on a 2005 Outback? If so, how do I do that? Also, I did the throttle body cleaning, new air filter, clean MAF sensor about 9000 mostly highway miles ago. Should I do that all again before doing an idle relearn?

Handbrake up should disable the DRLs. With that small amount of time, likely wouldn't need to reclean.

I have a question, what were the symptoms of this being bad, cause mine were it revving to atleast 4k rpms and it would do it on and off

In a manual subaru can you start the car and get out? Ive always sat in the car for the procedure but ive been curious if opening the door would draw enough load to mess it up

Not sure if this is related but my manual transmission XV would rev up to about 2500 if I was in gear and press in the clutch and stay there as if it was anticipating a gear change. It would idle down only if you shifted into neutral or press the brake. It drove me nuts especially driving in traffic with all the stop and go. It eventually went away so it must have relearned itself. I bet this video would have been very useful. Interestingly enough this happened after throttle body cleaning. Regular idle was fine. Just thought it might help someone. Great tutorial!

This is after I disconnect and reinstall my throttle body with a new gasket after cleaning it and getting the dirt off right it's for my 2008 impreza 2.5i naturally aspirated rubaru

I wonder if I can do this for my 2019 Crosstrek? It idles high

Going from a CVPI to the 2011 Outback I have now is nuts. The engine bay alone gives me hope of less blood pressure spikes when I need to do maintenance 🤣 I am actually really excited, and your videos are super in depth, thank you!

I tried to do the idle relearn on my 2011 NA Forester after changing the O2 sensors, but it did not take. I will try again today. However, one thing that is not being explained here or anywhere is the ambient temp conditions in which you can do this. Can it be done in a driveway when the exterior temp is in the 40s (F) or lower, and does the car have to be warm, to begin with???

Does this work on 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback models?

I just changed plugs and cleaned throttle bodies on both my 2014 crosstrek and my wife’s 2011 outback. I need to do this idle relearn ASAP. Thanks for a great video.

Why can't anybody ever write what model what year and what motor they're working on and what years have the same motors or parts. 🤦
