Issues I ran into while installing the new dial face (in order of import): 1. Tabs. By far and away the biggest headache was freeing the upper tabs of the transparent panel window. This is my first time trying to remove this type of connecton and my efforts reflected this. I understood the principle behind the push-in tabs, but I just couldn’t get the leverage to budge them. I tried using a pick like the one Kevin used in his video. Eventually, I pushed down so hard that the plastic tab broke. Once that one broke, the other two came out with somewhat less effort. The bottom tabs released themselves once the top ones were free. After completing the installation, the broken plastic tab doesn’t seem to affect the integrity of the transparent panel window. It seems securely fastened. Outwardly, you can't tell the difference that it is being held by 5 tabs instead of 6. 2. Metal clips. Kevin failed to mention that most (all?) of the screws are held in via metal clips. I accidentally knocked four of the clips off while removing the pieces. I found two of them and tried to replace them, but they were so loose I had to get some card stock paper to shim the metal pieces so that they would remain in place. I have no idea what happened to the other two metal clips, I was forced to reassemble everything with two of the screws inserted-but-not-connected-to-anything (installed loose). I’m assuming that the two screws freely spin because they are missing their respective metal clip. However, because the receiver is hidden in back of the panel, I don’t know whether the clip is missing or merely misaligned. I don’t even know whether there was a metal clip to begin with. All I can say is that the screws are fully inserted into their holes with zero resistance to turning. 3. Speedometer arm installed in the wrong position. I did my best to zero the speedometer arm during the reinstallation. I even test drove my KS4 back and forth in my driveway (couldn’t do much more than that because my steering wheel was removed). After completing all of the work and reinstalling the steering wheel, I took it for a test drive. Tested by a neighborhood speed warning sign that I have verified with my Tacoma speedometer in the past. Three trial runs at 40 mph. The new speedometer readings were 6-7 mph higher than the speed warning sign. At this point, I’m am reluctant to go back and correct the speedometer arm position due to the problems that I had with the tabs and metal clips. P.S. I'm glad I took the few minutes to remove the steering wheel before starting this work. I can't imagine how frustrating it would have been to do the dial installation while attempting to work through the steering wheel.

that sounds like quite the adventure with yours! i think once the tabs have been removed once, its easier the 2nd go around if you wanna fix the needle, which i think you should lol :D you got this!!
@1dash1339 ай бұрын
@arage Yeah, I'll probably recallibrate it. My earlier reaction was more of a knee-jerk reaction to dealing with the tabs and clips. But you know what they say, "No pain, no gain." And that's the way it is in Kei-land. If you aren't willing to put in the effort, then you probably should consider owning a different vehicle. EDIT: Done. Now accurate to within 1 mph according to my GPS Speedometer app. Probably more accurate than my factory Tacoma. 😉 EDIT 2: FYI, the zero mark on the speedometer dial is equivalent to something more like 5 or 6 mph. To properly calibrate the needle, you need to set it at least a full mark BELOW the zero mark.

The newer early TT2s have a similar cluster with no backlighting so this could also be done for those now that you Yanks can finally get the new generation in for on road use. The 2006+ Sambars have a totally different cluster though

Do you have a tutorial on replacing the instrument cluster lamps. Mine are pretty dim. I was hoping to replace with mini LED lamps if possible.
@OhKeiGarage4 ай бұрын
i do not, but removing the cluster is a little more compliacted. hard to reach plugs and speedo cable. it can be done. once it is out, then the bulbs can be swapped with LEDs. Everyone find the LEDs on amazon. I personally have not done it. Don't feel like tackling that one yet lol
