I have it headed out to a shop on Tuesday for an alignment.
Since my back injury, I discovered that hard wrenching is kinda out for me.
I’ve tried a few times, and discovered that I need to stick to projects where twisting is not required.
The tires came from Harley Rose -

Video #1 in the series talks about my decision. In short, make sure the paperwork is good. I went as far as to only look at trucks with current mass title, and registrations. The trucks themselves are generally pretty good bets.

1:20 - They're called balancing beads. Those 23X8-R12 tires with the deep tread will do great off road but will be noisy on road. I looked on their website but didn't see where those SuperGrip tires are DOT rated. Any wider and they'd sling mud on the sides of your truck unless you add some large fender flares, and the fold down sides of the bed won't hang vertically because they'll hit the tire. I'm getting the Harley Rose 2" coil over lift kit for my Hijet and I'm going to try to run 25X8-R12 Tusk Terrabite tires although I'll almost certainly need to trim a bit off the bottom of the doors even though I've read that the Hijet has an inch more tire clearance than the other kei trucks. 25" will give me another inch of ground clearance and they'll roll over larger diameter objects more easily. The tread isn't quite as aggressive and not as deep as your SuperGrip tires but I'm hoping they'll be a better road compromise by being DOT rated and hopefully not too loud. 2:00 - Your SuperGrip tires look great! 2:20 - Thanks for the view down the side. I was hoping you'd do that. I wanted to see how much they stuck out to the side, so I could guess how much mud they'd fling onto the truck. I plan on reusing my stock steel wheels and I think the offset will just barely miss the suspension with 8" wide tires, and that should have the tires barely within the wheel wells. I think that's the setup MotoCheez is using. I'll verify the offset will work before I order the Tusk tires. You have one chill dog. :-)
@JimsEquipmentShed
@JimsEquipmentShed Жыл бұрын
They don't sling mud terribly, but enough to make me consider fender flares. You are totally right about the side panels, they can no longer be run in the down position, but I never did that anyhow, so no biggie for me. The lift I have took a lot to get the alignment squared away, so it will be interesting to see if the fixed Harley Rose setup requires less tweaking. (I'm guessing it should be easier.) I love the looks of these tires, but predictably, they are noisy as hell. I used to run a Suzuki samurai with buckshots, so the noise doesn't bother me much. The tires I have (From Harley) are DOT rated, but only up to 55mph. No biggie for me. The balancing beads were a new one on me, at first, I though someone just changed a flat with a dirty rim. Until I got to rim, #4, they I started to see a pattern..... ;-)

@@JimsEquipmentShed - I bought my Hijet almost a month ago and it's still sitting in Yokohama. The wait is killing me. :-) It'll probably arrive in the US just in time for winter so my project upgrades will be deferred until spring. :-( I'll probably install the Harley Rose lift kit and larger tires over the winter. It'll give me more time to plan, measure, imagineer, shop online, etc. I hope you are recovering from your back problems. I broke my back when I was 16 and was in bed for almost two months. That's the time to do it! At 61, my recuperative powers are lousy. My wife bought two huge medical filing cabinets to organize her craft stuff. They were so large that only one fit into a full size pickup at a time. I wrecked my back getting them up the steps to the front porch. That was a couple of weeks ago and I'm still recovering... very slowly.

Is your hiJet 4x4 or 2WD? I run mine year round, I’m just very careful to wash it a lot in the winter. As the metal isn’t real thick. My back is just getting to the point where I can lift things again with out a crap ton of sharp pain. It’s made me a bit gun shy…… I never really worried about stuff like that before, but now, broken bones yak a lot longer to heal…

@@JimsEquipmentShed - My Hijet is 4WD with the HI/LO transfer case, but no rear diff lock and no A/C. Those would have been nice but the A/C is something to break and the radiator is fairly unprotected for off road use. I basically got the minimum features I wanted for my zombie apocalypse bug out truck project. :-) I hope your back continues to improve. I had just gotten over a broken rib from falling over on my motorcycle in the garage (Super Derp time) when my wife got those two monster industrial records filing cabinets that wrecked my back getting them into the house. That was a few weeks ago and I'm still recovering. At this age, I recuperate so slowly that something is always a bit broken. You're right about getting gun shy. Everything breaks easier, takes longer to get better, and many injuries never heal all the way now. Almost a month after paying for my Hijet, it's still in Yokohama. Mid-November is the earliest I'll see it, and probably more like December. The wait is interminable, and by the time it arrives it'll be too cold and wet to work on it. My fall project is becoming a spring project. :-/

With these new tires, you quadrupled the value of Jimmie Cricket. Handling will improve if you upgrade with Pedders suspension, look into their Track II kits with all new bushings. I didn’t notice if you have headers, but that’s something else to look into! And don’t forget a dog seat with 5-point harness for Ted when he’s along.
@JimsEquipmentShed
@JimsEquipmentShed 2 жыл бұрын
It actually has a factory header. I suspect that’s due to the engine design being much like a motorcycle. I do need new bushings for the rear, I’ll probably stick with rubber. The poly ones were always too stiff for off-road stuff. Ted’s car seat fits in it, but just barely…….

I got the rims from Harley Rose on FB, they were listed as "BLK L/O 115mm Rims with 23x8 K9 tires". No spacers, but the kit did come with new lug nuts that worked with the alloy rims. Keep in mind that each truck has a different pattern. For example, the earlier Suzuki uses 4X100mm and some of the Dyhatsus use a 4X114.5mm.

These are not to bad in 2wd in the snow if you add a little bit of weight over the rear axle. My minicab is only 2wd and I have had it out with a foot of snow and managed to get to work and back home no problems. Of course you for sure need a good tire and lift still. Did the alignment shop get it right? I have been messing with mine for about a year now and cannot figure out any way to get the positive camber out of it.
@JimsEquipmentShed
@JimsEquipmentShed Жыл бұрын
My alignment shop got it spot on. But this guy works in model T’s, so old school is kinda his bag. My truck spends most of its time in 2WD, once it’s rolling it’s fine. But out here in the sticks, it’s the getting it rolling part that would keep me from ever bothering with a 2WD. I keep my truck empty at all times, because when I go into town to pick up shavings, I need the square footage. (Or I probably would run a little weight in the back.) but honestly, with the 4WD to get it rolling, I’ve never really worried about adding extra weight.

@@JimsEquipmentShed Any idea how he managed to correct that camber? Im so stumped because my camber plates are maxed out. I even added blocks between the subframe and frame which helped but I cant possibly add any more lol. These are not like a standard strut mount where you could use camber bolts. I got my toe pretty darn good with string just that pesky camber. Its wearing the outside of my tires bad. Im probably going to flip them on the rims this spring.

On mine, its a combination of the vertical steering rod, and the drivers side vent. (Two separate items, giving my the symphony of sound...)
