Appreciate the lesson but am wondering what the tolerance might be? My workshop manual says to measure the width of the belt and that if it's less than 27mm, replace it. Mine is 30mm so that's good. but when I do your test shown here one side looks to be about a half tooth different. So that's not good!

I appreciate your video; thanks. I have an "Check Engine" idiot light, in my 2002 Forester, with 202.000 miles in it (yeah, I know...). The analyzer tells me "Knock Sensor". I did replace sparks (3 years old), and PCV. I can't remove the knocking sensor (risk to brake its bolt; frozen solid), but I hear "noises" at acceleration (similar to 'pinging', or the ball bearing in the PCV rattling, kind of). Could it be that the Timing Belt has a slack? Any of your insight and/or suggestions would be much appreciated; I am a retired person with limited income, mind you... Thanks.

As of this writing this question is from 4 years ago, but I can provide a comment based on my own experience with a faulty knock sensor. I have a 2001 Subaru Outback that I inherited from a family member. When I got the car the check engine light was on. The car seemed to run fine, but after awhile I noticed that it seemed to be sluggish when decelerating for a turn and then re-accelerating. The car would hesitate, and then all of a sudden the engine would "catch" and it would take off again. So I did some basic things -- changed the spark plugs and air filter (which it did need), and all seemed to be better, although the check engine light was still on. Later in the year I took the car in for inspection. The car passed without needing any repairs, and while there I asked the mechanic if he could put a scanner on the car to see what was causing the CEL to be on. So he did and told me it was a knock sensor code. So I left, drove home and got on KZbin to find out what a knock sensor was, and how to replace it on a Subaru. I watched a couple of videos and then ordered a knock sensor online. It came after a couple of days, total price with shipping, $19. I installed it, which was easy, started the car, and immediately the CEL went out, and the car has been running like a top ever since, close to 2 years ago. When I took that first drive with the new knock sensor I noticed the change immediately. The car has great acceleration after stopping and slowing down. When you need power to go up hills the engine and transmission respond beautifully. So I can say with confidence that if anyone out there has a knock sensor code come up on their Subaru, change it out. It will make a world of difference for the better.
