Now, this is what I wanted Dual Destinies to be. I don't even know anything about the game yet, but I'm getting a very dark atmosphere from this video. That same dark atmosphere in the first four Ace Attorney games. The music is also spot-on. I really feel the Shu Takumi touch here. Don't get me wrong, I loved Dual Destinies, but I can't help but feel that, while the theme of the game was dark, the atmosphere felt very light. I can't describe it exactly, but that's how I think of it. I just didn't feel as immersed in the game as much as the first four Ace Attorneys. What I hope, though, is that this connects with the main Ace Attorney games. I have an idea, let's get Ami Fey in this game and let her meet Ryuunosuke . And then in the next present day Ace Attorney game, reference events from The Great Ace Attorney through some mysterious mystic character who knows whatever events happen in this game and somehow connect them to Apollo, Trucy and Athena to give them more character development and at the same time give Phoenix a stronger tie to Apollo and Athena's stories, since their ancestors were all involved in it. Now, because it has the Fey clan involved with all its mysticism, in the present day, Mia and Maya would come back. And also note how Apollo and Trucy come from a family of magicians, what if it was somehow connected with the Feys? And with Athena also having her special abilities, what if she's somehow connected too? I think this game shouldn't be a spin-off and it should be a prelude that leads to something greater in the next present day Ace Attorney game. That would give it a nice sense of scale. Just an idea, though, to connect as many Ace Attorney games as possible, because I love connecting stories that seem unrelated. Sadly, none of this will ever come true. I just like the thought of it. If anyone spots inconsistencies with my idea, feel free to reply. I'd love to patch my idea up.

Wow......that idea totally made my day!!! And your thoughts on dual destinies, too. I mean, I really enjoyed it. It made me laugh and was just entertaining. Sometimes sad, too. But it just didn't feel as real... Well, maybe I can never get that feeling back from AA1-3. I mean it sounds silly but I really miss the old-school music. It created even more atmosphere than this really beautiful music (kinda Layton-style in my opinion). But other than Maya missing (and Nick as a lawyer in AJ...) and the music, I couldn't point out what actually was missing in DD. But the missing darkness you mentioned...it's true. To your story idea: You just won the internet. And you should be hired by Capcom! I also don't like the fact that so many stories in the AA universe are not tied together... it's not satisfying for a fan to only hear of a certain character's name in a letter. And bringing back Mia would be so wonderful! Really missed her spirit in PL vs AA aswell as DD. To me, she belongs at Nick's and Maya's side! My biggest wish is just the return of Maya. She's my favourite character of all time, and what does Capcom do? They probably didn't want to create complete new sprites for her in AJ. And now they probably don't feel like she "fits into the story". But if she doesn't, then something must be off. She's one of the few main characters. I think the story should be responsible for the characters. The characters shouldn't be responsible for the story.

Emmy Fey Thanks! Yeah, I also miss the old school music, but since we're on the 3DS now, Capcom has to move on. If they stuck with the pixelated sprites and old-school music, most people would see it as a lack of effort. I'd say the music here in this trailer is the next best thing. The fact that there are so many stories that aren't related to one another in Ace Attorney is exactly why I thought up that idea. I would really love to see every main character being related to the big case at the end of the next present day Ace Attorney. Remember, that was one of the reasons why Trials and Tribulations was so effective.

Oh my, T&T is my favourite AA game. It felt really epic with so many characters and plot twists etc! I especially love the appearance and character from Dahlia. It's so easy to not like her and I admire such a character creation you know? Let's hope that Takumi will remember what made the original AA games the best so he can make the next one epic as hell! ***** This is set in the Meiji period at the turn of the 20th century, placing it at about 1899/1900's. Unless Athena's mother somehow found the secret to eternal youth and was actually from the early 20th century, there'd be no way she'd be around in this game for the player to get to know her more before the events of Dual Destinies in this game but it was a nice idea all the same, I can see where you're coming from.

This is where they should just go "Phoenix has a japanese ancestor" and localize it that way. Which would eliminate the possibility for english puns in the names... And would definitely give them a hard time with the existing surnames. Ryuunosuke Wright doesn't sound... right. Heh. Sligneris I dunno, would that work? They'd be clearly japanese-dressed people in a clearly japanese setting in an actual historical period of japanese history, and the narrative themes of the game will most probably also be heavily japanese-inspired. I don't know how well english names would work there, even if they attempted to use old-style names as in Professor Layton VS Ace Attorney. Then again, both this and PLvsAA were directed by Takumi. Although I don't think neither him nor the development team will consider the localization process in the slightest.

I feel the should either used English names (Though that wouldn't work given the setting) or use the names in Romanji Japanese for the localization. Only issue with that is, for someone in the Western world (Or possibly anyone outside of Japan) Romanji names, despite using the Latin alphabet they still take a lot of brain power to learn how to pronounce and remember, the only Romanji name in the Ace Attorney series I can remember off by heart is Bansai Ichiyanagi but even he has an unofficial fan translation of his name (Blaise Debeste). But just because it's in Romanji doesn't mean pun names won't happen, Bansai Ichiyanagi is a Japanese pun that roughly translates as 'Forever number one' which was how he saw himself in Ace Attorney: Investigations 2. So there will still be puns, we just won't understand them.

Japanese game developers have sent us tons of crazy Asian-culture games, with my personal favorites being in the Shin Megami Tensei series, and I'm sure that having somewhat of a culture dictionary ingame to explain certain things could solve pretty much all problems.

I think that all the previous games were localized as 'American' as the first game stuck with that (probably due to Japanese themes making less sense to USA/EU back then), so the other games had to follow suit. However this game has no excuse to not be set in Japan whatsoever and I believe they will NOT set it in America for obvious reasons (I'm worried about the names though). But in other news, this looks amazing and probably influenced by the crossover game, I can't wait to see what this has in store for us!

I don't see how this would be hard to localize. All they would have to say is that Phoenix has a Japanese background and take place in Japan and all that. I'll admit, it would be hard to make this place like an old timey Los Angeles. And as for chances for localization, I say there's a pretty high chance, let's remember that Capcom's more popular games included Dual Destinies, and they localized Okami and it's sequel, which was FULL of Japanese things and culture!

His last name is Wright. How can a Japanese get the last name Wright? I mean, sure, I guess it would be easier to just say that it changed somewhere else later in the timeline, but it's the keypoint that points Phoenix to his ancestor. Without the Wright, the players would still make the connection between the characters, but the blood connection wouldn't too strong.

We don't know enough of the game to be able to tell if it would be hard to localize. If Phoenix is the only person with an ancestor in the game, then the localizers will probably be able to manage. If we start seeing ancestors of all the other characters, then that becomes a problem. It's easy to believe that PW's ancestor moved to America. It'd be hard to believe that everyone had an ancestor from Japan.

Actually, reading all these comments... I'm kind of surprised at the amount of criticisms for Dual Destinies... I thought it was pretty good. It felt a little different from the PW Trilogy, it's spirit, you could say, wasn't the same, but... In itself, I thought it was a good game, with good plot, and plot TWIST, more importantly, and, well... It felt like it was pretty much at the same standard as most of the other AA games.

DD has been really good so far (I'm only about halfway through with it - just finished the third case), but I do feel like it's missing... something. It sort of feels like it's riding a bit too much on the success of its predecessors. I don't really know how to explain it adequately, but I don't think it's nostalgia goggles talking. I think this game - a complete reset conceptually, character-wise, aesthetically, and just overall directorial approach - could do the franchise good. Of course, it shouldn't be permanent, this is just a spin-off, but I think it's what the series needs to breathe some new life into it. After all, you can only follow one man's story for so long.

The title of the game (Dai Gyakuten Saiban) translates to The Great Turnabout Trial and the localized name is The Great Ace Attorney. This means that the events of this game are influential to the legal system in this world, after all lawyers where a new concept in Meiji Japan. The title would indicate that the final case could be called The Great Turnabout Trial, and be a historical event, meaning that the Naruhodou name would be famous. The court in the first game should have expected better, Pain should have been afraid to face him! But since Phoenix starts off without a reputation that would mean that something that made everyone forget how crucial the Great Trial was, and thus the game is Phoenix reminding the present of the case. Also why does he have a sword?

I know this is a conceptual debut trailer and they still hadn't written very much at the point of this trailer's release, but one has to wonder if these concept-art shots of the different camera angles for the courtroom and etc. are indicative that the final game may go back to 2D sprites? It could look gorgeous since the 3DS has a higher res than a DS. Games like Dillon's Rolling western have a sharp and clean 2D art style for dialogue. It could work extremely well!

As a person who watches subbed animes, it would really be great if they went with the "phoenix has japanese ancestors" and if the setting takes place in japan instead of LA. Plus i'd honestly explode with happiness if they kept Ryuunosuke's japanese name.....of course it's highly unlikely. At most they'll probably change his first name (like some old animes) ....Well i'll keep on dreaming. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a Gyakuten Kenji 2 thing again... I just realized, we don't even know if Ryuunosuke is directly related to Phoenix. He's his ancestor but they don't say whether he's his Grandfather or anything. For all we know it could be his brother or sister that is his grandparent. Ryu could have even adopted his kid which would make it easier for the english version to change the kids last name to Wright. Sidenote: I wonder if they'll leave in the honorifics?

This looks really cool and I'm sure I'll love the game. Really hope we get a localisation. But I can't help wondering if they are ever going to fill in the cliffhangers from Phoenix and the gang's story. What of Peals' mother's promised revenge? Apollo and Trucy's shared parenthood? What about Maya? Does she finish her training and become the master? Does she get with Mr Nick just like Peals had dreamed of? Not to mention the complete lack of Mia in the last game. What's happened to her? Has she passed onto what could be considered the 'other side' or is she still watching? God Damit! I want my answers! Hopefully they'll do something really cool like release another Phoenix Wright game that address' these questions. For the moment I will be happy with gleefully awaiting this game... I'm so excited already.

Well, if we think for a bit, we can "solve" some of these issues, iirc DD Pearl said Maya was the master in some way, Nick lost his badge for 8 years, maybe it was too late to Morgan to take revenge at Maya(since she became the Master) and Nick was "destroyed" without his Attorney's badge, Pearl still ship Maya and Nick iirc, but not many details on DD and about Mia, she said Nick didn't need her anymore after T&T last case, where he blew Godot's plan without her help.

Matheus Ferreira You answered with a lot of good old LOGIC. *cough Edgeworth was speaking. kinda* :D But I think I can speak for the most fans from the very first three games that these possible answers won't satisfy us. I feel like Capcom still looks around for puzzle pieces, still figuring out how to tie up its lose ends together into one game. With returning characters etc. We wanna see the old cast, of course together with the new ones, so it won't feel forced. And honestly, Nick and Maya have such a close relationship (I don't necessarily mean in a romantic way, though I support Pearl's opinion there), Maya would do anything to see him again. She would always find her way of meeting him besides her business as the master. And when they meet, something ALWAYS happens. Somewhere a murder or kidnapping... So Capcom wouldn't be able to argue that we will never see Maya again just because her future is "already decided" and the case is "closed". I know you never said that these answers justify some characters' absence, but I know that +MegaMarshmallow is referring to the wish that the lose ends need to be tied up, not only reasonable but in an emotional way. Right?^^

Aside from localization issues, one of the biggest game changer thing that I'm seeing here is the fact that it's set in the past. No video footage evidence, no fingerprint analysis, blood tests, photographs... basically a laaaarge chunk of the main attorney thing. Evidence. I haven't played PWvsPL but I believe they'll pull off something similar to it. I don't think there are finger print analyses in that game, was there? Eh... but still. Maybe they'd introduce a whole new way to play the game? Who knows?

I love Ace Attorney and Feenie too but let it go. He had about 5 games worth of character development and his story already played out. What more can they do? Apollo and Klavier needs it the most. (Like will Apollo ever know who his parents are and his connection to Tracy? Why doesn't Klavier grieve when his best friend and brother is thrown into jail? How close were the Gavin brothers? Why did Apollo want to be lawyer?) Hell, Apollo's first game was ALL about Phoenix. I love Dual Destinies and Athena is my favorite character. But the Dark Age of Law idea starting then is complete bullshit! A prosecutor killed someone? I guess Manfred von Karma, Godot, and Jacques Portsman doesn't count. An unethical defense attorney? Well, Phoenix forging evidence makes sense but he was not the first unethical defense attorney. Robert Hammond (never believed in his clients, made Yogi plead insanity and ruined his life) and Calisto Yew (killed a Prosecutor and was part of a smuggling ring). It would be the Dark Age of Law if a judge killed someone. In my opinion the Dark Age of Law started at DL-6. And this game is like a new way to re-invent the Ace Attorney series. I for one, can't wait to see more of it. I'm just wondering how the localization team is going to fix this lol

The difference with Nick and Simon's crimes is that they were seen in the public eye to be outstanding figures of justice. Nick was seen as someone who would do whatever he could to find the truth, and him using forged evidence ran contrary to that, and made everyone question if he forged evidence in all his cases. Likewise, Simon was seen as someone who believed strongly in a strict moral code, and killing Metis ran contrary to that persona that he had in the public's eye. The examples you gave were all people that didn't have a good public image in the first place, or, in the case of Godot, any public image. It wasn't as shocking to people, and didn't inspire the people in legal schools the way Wright's crime did.

Apparently Phoenix's ancestor teams up with Sherlock Holmes and apparently Watson is a 8 year old girl named Iris...I guess John Watson was a character she made to be her avatar... But seriously, apparently he teams up with Sherlock when he and Susato go to Europe during a case or something... Welp, it's official folks: Phoenix WRight takes place in the same universe as Sir Conan Doyle's stories AND with Professor Layton, if the fact that it takes a plane ride to go to Layton's place in Europe says a lot...

I wonder how on earth they would "localise" this since they've been continually changing it so Ace Attorney takes place in LA for every game so far? I really want them to bring this game out in English, but I can see 4 possibilities with the localisation: 1) They make it set in a 1900s Chinatown 2) They claim Phoenix has a Japanese ancestor 3) They fix their major localisation problem at last 4) They still say it's in LA For teh lulz.

...Phoenix's ancestor is a samurai lawyer...huh... now I know who inspired Simon Blackquill :P And likley in this situation...I think the dubbers will say taht this is Phoenix's ancestor, and likely from his Mother's side. since it's highly unlikely they can give him an American name when it's before the World Wars, so I kind of have doubts at this time that the Japanese could have jobs as lawyers in America at this point. ;; Though I think these two could be Phoenix's great-great grandparents. After all, it's set in 1900. It could make sense if this was when Ryuunosuke and Susato were young adults. and people worried about localization? There WERE parts of California that were set out for the Asian population...and if they keep it to Japan, it wouldn't really be all that different. They would just need to find something that would have a similar meaning to 'Wright'. Hell, they would likely be talking to the japanese team on how to dub it without insulting their past.

I don't know though...'Phoenix' as a name sounded reasonable because there are so many crazy names today. But in that time, Dragon would be really odd as an English name. I'd think maybe Draco, except that makes me think of Malfoy, and I'm not sure I could handle that for a main character.

I wouldn't put it past them to explain nothing and localise all the names but NOT the region which... would amuse me and make me want to headdesk at the same time and is, probably, the route they'd take. It's certainly the easiest route. That and localising only the names of characters who are clearly meant to be related to already-existing-localised names (ie, Naruhodou Ryuunosuke becoming something like Chiron Wright. Go look up Chiron in Greek mythology for why that was what I chose for my example. He's a centaur. Go on.) but keeping the others except Westernising the order (ie, Mikotoba Susato becoming Susato Mikotoba). Ryuunosuke is adorable, by the way. He sort of looks like Clay to me, just with a less angular face.

Well, the easiest route that includes localising the names is to just localise them and not the region, especially since they'll probably have to localise Naruhodou Ryuunosuke's name (They're not going to keep his surname as Naruhodou, for goodness sake, as people seem to hope they will, it's going to be Wright). I prefer the idea of localising names, though I myself speak Japanese (albeit not fluently anymore), in part because I know that people will butcher the spelling and pronunciation. I have nothing against the Japanese names, I should make clear, I love the way they sound. The Japanese language is both very pretty and very cute. If they localise the names, great, if not, fine.

Ellie F. I get the feeling they'll most likely change his name to "Raito" or something similar. It wouldn't be that hard to say that he changed his name to Wright sometime after the game. There are alot of ways you can have the family name change over a few generations so its not like its impossible for them to have different last names. As for other characters I think they will meet half way and change them so they make sense to an english speaker while still sounding japanese. I hope we see an "Ejjiwasu" make an appearance and basically confirm that everyone has japanese ancestors.

Am I the only person who doesn't want to see Edgeworth have an ancestor in the game? I like Edgeworth, hell, Apollo and Franziska are my favourite characters in the games and I wouldn't really care much to see their ancestors in the game. Seeing their ancestors go up against Phoenix's ancestor would be too much of a coincidence for my tastes. Really, if there are more ancestor characters, I just hope they're not just like their descendants. Like Ryuunosuke being rather more stiff and formal and less susceptible to reacting to being mocked than Phoenix, but not like Edgeworth was. About the only other ancestor I can really not be irked at first at seeing is one for Payne, because I got the impression he comes from a long line of prosecutors. At the very least, he gets an expy. And... *OBJECTION!* The surname not being Japanese doesn't mean his ancestors aren't Japanese. Ryuunosuke could easily be like 3/4 Japanese, with his paternal grandfather being American and thus the name Wright passed from him to his son to his grandson. Same goes for Edgeworth or any other character. There's really, really no need for "Raito" or "Ejiwasu" when they can just use the original surnames... It won't be obvious to younger players, especially ones who aren't familiar with Japanese, that they're supposed to be "Wright" and "Edgeworth", because younger people and people who know virtually nothing about the Japanese language DO play these games. There's NOTHING wrong with keeping the same surnames their descendants have, especially if there's only one or two characters besides Ryuunosuke who are ancestors of other characters and have the same surname. I really don't get why people are so bloody against it. Yeah, it takes place in Japan during a special era, I know that, am I just missing something? Is it just Rule of Cool? Am I being racist? Heck if I know, but if I am, it's not my intent. I should also point out that we don't even know if the fact that it takes place in that period is even significant as more than just a time period, especially since the promo implies it's at the END of the Meiji period, in the very early 1900's. If the ordeals of the Meiji period don't affect the story, then they will probably just straight out localise it entirely. Also a lot of the meaning in the names gets lost when the players don't speak Japanese or don't speak it enough to get the joke, and the names are half the fun of the characters. But I should shut up because I'm a one woman army it seems about the naming ideas.

Most Europeans (barring UK people) are not xenophobes and they don't mind a game to take place in Japan, China or any other place. The USA is a very insular culture in a very globalised world, very similar to the Japanese in that respect.
