Game 6 of my Subbuteo take on the 1976 Home Internationals. Scotland v England.

Thanks Graham, I never had the rugby as a kid so didn’t get the chance to play it. But now I have a set I’m going to give it a go. Should be interesting 🫣

@@SubbuteoFocus You might struggle with the different ball shape. There is a good bit of setting up the team positions for lineouts and scrums. The 'scrummer' was always great fun... the oversized kicker was good as well... but I always struggled with the drop goal kicking wedge... many a player went flying into orbit from that!! I did not get the cricket because I got Test Match. Good luck anyway!

@@grahamlloyd7157 Graham I can just imagine that player flying off the pitch. Yes as in real life that ball shape will make it a challenge 😁 All looks fun though. I love the Cricket, I didn’t have test match but played it a few times, much easier to set up and play.

Thanks Mike, yes Clemence did have a bit of a word with Dalglish but was more of a quiet word. He could have gone nuts at him 😁

The Subbuteo match was good, end to end stuff, alot of missed chances from both teams, but perhaps a draw was the the right result. Meaning of course that Wales were champions -well they did have the best looking kit after all. I've seen a Subbuteo team painted in the Admiral Wales 2nd kit which was pale yellow with green and red trim - I don't think Subbuteo ever made that though. The actual game - maybe Scotland did deserve to win, although they never looked like scoring a goal until Clemence dropped that clanger. Was that the year they invaded the pitch at the end and tore up sections of the turf? My dad always said that the Wembley pitch never looked as good after that happened......

It was a tight game Darren, England hitting the woodwork twice and Scotland having some good chances. And they left the door open for Wales! And they did have the best kit. I haven’t seen the Wales second kit, I wonder if it was a repaint. The post and turf destruction was at Wembley, the year escapes me, this one was at Hampden Park, so the Tartan Army enjoyed a victory at their home ground so no need to rip it up 😁

I remember how much stick Clemence got in the press the day after it, and on the Monday saying it was a soft goal for him to concede.I will agree Scotland had a decent side and when you think about it, thry did qualify for successive world cups (74 & 78) I still think Home inernationals could be used to develop youngsters at international level. Hoping now we have aggod Euros, and getting out of that group has to be first prioty. I think our only test will be the French.

Yes I remember Clemence getting pelters after that one. And deservingly so! I think people of my age remember the home internationals with fondness, and it would be a good end of season tournament to have a look at fringe and young players in a friendly but competitive game situation. This was probably the best Scottish team I’ve seen in my lifetime. Be interesting to see how the euros pan out, tough start for Scotland.

@@SubbuteoFocus It is far more a tougher start for Scotland I agree. Were the Home internationals classed as Full internationals or not?

@garybanks2325 I think players did get caps for home internationals but I stand to be corrected on that.

Northern Ireland couldn't play at home because of the trouble in Belfast at the time if my memory is correct? Im liking the Action Man is he Foreign Legion?

Remember watching the game live and not believing that Ray Clemence making that error against the ‘old enemy’. He was normally so reliable and kept Peter Shilton out of the starting team for years! On the Subbuteo front - I have those two classic 70’s England and Scotland teams. My only disappointment is that Subbuteo didn’t contrast the Scotland team with a white base and blue disk. So many kids at the time would have had those two teams - for me subbuteo thrives on the contrast of the teams bases rather than strips.

@@jonathanwoodard6147 it shows the impression that goal had if you can remember it so vividly. I would have been 11 years old and can remember it like it was yesterday! Totally agree about the bases, Red and black/dark blue combo would have looked nice as well.
