because of this video, I asked my vet to teach me how to do this when my 1,5 month kitten diagnosed with panleukopenia. she was severely dehydrated (when I pinched her skin it stayed up. it was horrible.) and I figure if I keep her in clinic she will be even more stressed out surrounded in strange place without me by her side. so I think it would be better if I learn how to do this at home. thankfully the vet was very helpful and she gave me the fluid that is already been mixed with required medication and extra vitamins. apparently it helps her a LOT! she perked up after every injection and it helped a lot with her medication. she's now a happy and fat 3 month old kitty! I'm glad I came across your instagram and youtube channel that day, you just save another calico kitty here in Indonesia

Of course it’s Indonesia! Here in US you couldn’t get Ringers solution even if your life depended on it. The only way is through the vet IF he is nice enough. And if it’s a weekend the only way to do it is to go to Emergency Vet Clinic and be ready to shell out around 2000$ for an overnight care. In all other countries you can find Ringers solution in any pharmacy, just not here

I found a kitten and i rescued him he was alone for hours so i picked him up took him home and he looked about 20 days old. I bought him a bunch of things and he knew how to use the liter box so I didn't have to stimulate Anyways he looked fine except he slept a lot and i wan going to take him to the vet the next day but in the middle of the night i woke up because it smelled really bad in my room and i found the kitten had pooped so i picked him up to clean his bed and I realized his whole body was limb it was the saddest thing ever. He looked dead but he wasn't and he seemed to be in a lot of pain he made facial expressions like he was meowing but he couldn't meow. I touched is paws and ears and noticed they were extremely cold. So i started looking things up online and i think he was going through fading kitten syndrome. So i put some blankets in the dryer and put them on top of a heating pad and put the kitten there & i syringe fed him pedialyte. I didn't sleep that night. I thought the kitten slowly got better then it got worse again all in that night and sadly he died even though I really tried to save him. There weren't any 24 hour vet clinics near me but i did what i could and I regret not taking him to the vet the moment i found him. He just looked fine and clean and he approached me and was purring so i fell in love. I wish i could've saved him 💔 but i adopted a cat with in that week and he had a upper respiratory infection i guess from being around a lot of cats. He is the best cat ever. The first cat I rescued off he streets was a feral kitten and he never ever got used to me or anyone he still wanted to be in the streets even though I had him for a year he always left and would only come home to eat. I made sure to get him neutered though. He would bring me back mice every now and then lol he was a good cat he was just happier out doors and i just made sure he was doing good and being fed. I love cats & all animals

@@delftblue8801 I am lucky to have a neighbor that has given many pets fluids.. he helped me the first two times. I had help holding my kitty the first two times I did it on my own. You pitch a tent on the back below the shoulder blades, if the drip doesn't go, then it's not in well enough. I put it in and feel it underneath and then start the drip. After doing with help twice, I now do it on my own. I do have to comfort her and I always make a little nook.i have the bag hanging on a hook by the bed. I was so worried about her being frightened of me. She isn't and she's doing well. Sometimes it takes me 5 minutes of giving myself a pep talk, but I get it done 😳💝 I wish you luck, confidence and calm.

The only thing different I would recommend is wiping the rubber part of the LR bag before you stick the needle in just to make sure it's sterile...especially if it's a really young kitten or one that's already sick with a compromised immune system. We had a litter with the calisivirus (limping kitten syndrome) and they wouldn't eat, so we had to do Sub-Q fluids until the antibiotics really kicked in and made them feel better. Thankfully, within 4 days they were feeling better and back to eating! The worst thing I had to do was tube feed a litter of 2 day old kittens whose mother wouldn't feed them and they were starting to fade. They caught whatever she had and one by one I lost them all over the next 7 days, but at least they left the world with a full belly knowing they were loved. It's all I could do for them.

Keeping plastic syringe handy, water slow into side of mouth. Can buy 30ml etc. off internet. When cats dehydrated they can also consequently be prevented to drink on attempt. Or fail. I think their oesophagus or swallowing apparatus also becomes dehydrated, plays a part & cat needs human assist. Meaty (canned) drinks help cat enthusiastic to drink. As cats only sippers of water. If having eaten excessive dry kibble food, cats/kittens need consume enough fluid to match for proper digestion & for avoiding dehydrated kidney stress.

Several years ago I administered SubQ fluids to my friend's older cat (with renal problems) every day for several weeks. I'm a nurse so I had no problems doing this. What I'm wondering is what size butterfly you use for a kitten - a 23g or 25g or...? I'd like to have some on hand (along with some Lactated Ringers) for the occasion when I get a cat from the shelter that is dehydrated.

Kelly Swartzentruber yes but you normally use one with a line attached and an 18 gauge non butterfly needle because the cat is an adult and needs more and its not going to wiggle as much..you won't use a syringe at all. Google sub q fluids for adult cat.

I have a question. You heated the bag of fluids and after it cools down you can reheat the same bag until it is complete used up right?
@sickntired987 жыл бұрын
You share lots of great information. But what you did here was not sterile, and each time you use a needle it gets a little bit duller. You should always sterilize the membrane (alcohol wipe) prior to inserting needle. Because you not only contaminated the needle, you contaminated the solution. You might consider getting syringes with a needle attached, to draw fluid, then remove needle and add butterfly.

Question for you, Kitten Lady - why dose not a dehydrated kitten drink on its own, instead of needing subcutaneous injection? Love your channel and what you do.
@ettinakitten50473 жыл бұрын
They might not have the energy to drink enough because they're feeling so unwell, or if they're sick (diarrhea, vomiting, etc), they might be losing fluids faster than they can drink.
@FAIRYGIRL9113 жыл бұрын
subcutaneous is pretty fast, it gets into the skin/muscles/joints etc pretty quickly, whereas having the cat drink involves having the water go through the digestive system first. the cat may also have some issues with their digestive tract/kidneys that makes it harder for the appropriate amount of water to get where it needs to be

Legend has it, if you're early you get a response... Well that legend is a load of rubbish usually.

I have rescued 5 kittens in Korea... I left 3 hours ago and one of the cats... the one who was doing the best... must've been throwing up and then had diarrhea ... he is a mess... severely dehydrated.... I have given him 10cc's subq 2 times in the last 45 minutes... does anyone know how often... he was so plump this morning... so discouraging... they were taken from the mother and left in a box for at least 2 days before I got them... they were about a week old... I have had them 2 1/2 weeks.... any help would be appreciated

how do u do it without them crying or wiggling? my sick kitten sounds so sad when i do it to her, and im sure im doing it correctly

It will hurt, no matter how well you're doing it. It's puncturing the skin, so pain is inevitable. Just know that it's for her own good even if it makes her unhappy in the moment.
