I knew about Subjunctive Mood when I encountered issues with grammar whilst writing minutes of meeting. However, even though I knew about it for many years, you have the most comprehensive and clear explanation of all the resources I have come across thus far. Thanks for your detailed, fuzz free and clear explanation.

great lesson. Subjunctive mood and indicative mood nice explanation.

Problem at 5:40. When the subjunctive mood is used to express a wish, demand etc, original form of the verb is used. Like “am is are” become “be” in the first row. For hypothetical situation, “am is are” become “were”. In the 3rd row, “I was free” shall become “I wish I had been free”.

I’m learning Spanish right now and this video was very helpful in understanding the subjunctive, which is a notoriously tricky grammar. I can’t believe how much more clarity I have meow.

For the several "demand" examples, I note that the second verb would appear to be in a more "normal" construction if prefaced by "shall". You give good illustrations. I should also like to see some explanation of how we historically/grammatically came to a subjunctive mood in the first place, and/or even what the abstraction of "mood" means. I do not say this is your responsibility, only that it is my wish.

I didn't know that subjunctive mood is on the same criterion with indicative and imperative mood ! Thank you so much! As far as I understood from your class, a hypothetical mood is used when a possible event didn't happen in past, but I can mention it now. That's why I use past tense in If clause. It could be a tentative present situation, but obviously isn't the present situation.

This was a great lesson. The problem here though is just want is considered hypothetical. I see "If the sun was shinning, I would be swimming" as a statement of fact with no need for were. What about, "If I was home, I'd be working on my homework"? I see nothing hypocritical about that, so no need for were.
@Grammar-Monster2 жыл бұрын
Nice thought, but it’s a statement of fact based on a condition, so “were” is acceptable. I think you’re overthinking it. But, maybe I’m underthinking it. 🧐 Nice question 👍
@cryptocoin53182 жыл бұрын
Use were when an if clause states a situation that is impossible , extremely unlikely, or simply untrue. Use was in all other cases. If I were you, I would make that phone call. ( it is impossible for me to be you.) If I was asked, I'd go with you. (It is possible that I'll be asked.) Here is another example: If Bob (CEO) was here, he would be yelling at us. ( Bob is inside the building but not inside the office. ) If Bob were here, he would be yelling at us. (Bob is neither inside the building nor inside the office.) "If I was home, I'd be working on my homework"." -- The distance becomes hypothetical If I was in my room, I would be working on my homework. ( I'm inside my house but not inside my room.) If I were in my room, I would be working on my homework. ( something happened to my room; being remodel or preventing me from) If the sun was shinning, I would be swimming: If sunny today, I will go swimming If it were sunny today, I would go swimming. If it had been sunny today, I would have gone swimming. There is no past participle of “were”. One would think it would be WAS but is BEEN as replacement for the past participle of were. for example the irregular verb of RUN: Ran ( infinitive ); Ran (Past Tense) ; Run (Past Participle) There is no past participle for were but there is a past participle for SUN and shine: Sunned and Shone If it had sunned today, I would have gone swimming. If the sun had shone, I would have gone swimming. OR if the sun shines, I will go swimming. Or If the sun shined, I would go swimming. The most Grammatical Correctness: If it is sunny today, I be swimming at the lake. ( if conditions are met) If it is sunny today, I swim at the lake. ( habitual) Cheers !

What about subjunctive mood with passive voice, could you make a video for that, please?
@jatirmoyadhikary78652 жыл бұрын
In the field of passive voice, the formation of second verb will be "Be + V3". Example: Active: Rocha advised that John take the exam. Passive: Rocha advised that the exam be taken.

I have a question. Regarding this example with ''wish''. Instead of saying ''I wish that situation end soon'', wouldn't be more appropriate to say ''I wish that situation would end soon''? Keeping in mind that we use wish to refer to hypothetical situations where the verb that follows is always subjunctive but past. If you can reply, I would really appreciate it.

The verb form in the subjunctive mood often mirrors the imperative mood. Example: "Eat" vegetables. (Imperative Mood) It is imperative that you "eat" vegetables. (Subjunctive Mood)

@@gaMEXDavid both correct but normally you will see (if...V2,... would V1) as it is the standard form. The context you mentioned, might have emphasized the importance of the imaginary situation. ( If only you would do this, that would really become.)
