Yeah, when I finally upgraded to the Cutlass. I loved it. Still do. But once I got the tankiness and extra cargo of the Freelancer, it was worth losing a bit of Agility. But now I've gone up to a FL Max. And zero regrets. She's a keeper.

It might or might not matter that much, but the turret on the Freelancer is 2xS2, and as mentioned can’t fire forward because of the spoiler. CIG decided early on that it should be “defensive” so they made sure you couldn’t use it to fire on the same target as the pilot. The Cutlass, on the other hand, has an “offensive” turret that is 2xS3 and can fire forward. Depending on how the improvements to turrets go in 3.10, this might impact your decision regarding Freelancer vs. Cutlass.

After having both a Cutty and a Lancer, I love to use the Lancer more than the Cutty, but the Cutty has a certain charm to it. The Cutty is faster and more nimble, but other than that it does everything the Lancer does, but worse. Less cargo, less missiles, smaller gimball guns, fewer components (mainly the shields, it has half the shield slots of the Lancer). The Cutty is good, but, in my opinion, the Lancer is better. Especially the MIS. God I love the MIS.

I love my MIS too but I HATE the bed placement in the Freelancer series. I'm also not a fan of the visibility and I can't count how many times I'm rushing through the ship trying to take off and the door sticks so I hit F and then suddenly I get stuck in a bunk. Also the turret on the 'lancer is trash compared to the cutty in terms of placement. Lastly, when the ROC hits, the base 'lance may not be able to fit one, while the cutty has room to spare.

I also love my MIS, but I hate all the wasted space in the Freelancer. There is no reason to have four seats with MFDs, a separate engineering station, and four beds. Why would you ever need a crew that large? It’s true that a lot of ships have co-pilot seats with nothing for a copilot to do, but having three copilots is silly.

@@JookySeaCpt While I can't say for sure whether it makes sense given I don't know what CIG has planned (not sure they even know). It does always strike me as a little weird that the Freelancer is meant for a crew of 4... while my 600i flies with a bridge crew of 3. (arguably it's a ship designed for 3-5 crew and since I have touring variant, 4 to 9 passengers as well, depending on how you look at it) So... 90 metre long luxury ship can operate fine with 3 people, but a 30 metre workhorse vessel needs 4? Doesn't really add up does it? XD Though I have a soft spot for the freelancer cockpit. It's mainly caused by the resemblance to the cockpit of Starbug on Red dwarf though. But that's kind of a poor comparison, because while there is a strong resemblance between Starbug and a freelancer (freelancer MIS even has a similar paint scheme) Starbug is a fairly large mining support shuttle, and in terms of scale is more comparable to a starfarer than a freelancer... So, yeah... I think practically speaking a freelancer doesn't need 4 crew. But still I like that cockpit for some reason. XD

I feel like the freelancer should get rid of two beds and replace them with some storage/weapon racks... And maybe jump seats... There's just no need for this ship to need a full 4 man bedded crew imo Also I think it would be smarter to have the turret closer to the middle where the docking collar is, so it can shoot all around easier but I'm not 100% if that's possible or even better Would also be very simple to give a better pilot view by just like making the windshield bigger

Yeah totally agree. I can see the freelancer as a fully capable exploration ship for a two-person crew. There's enough room for a bit of comfort without the two additional beds and the four seats in the cockpit. You can put literally everything inside it: small table / bench for sitting, a nice kitchen deck as the origin 300 has etc..

Been using this ship for years in Alpha. Such a great ship and great for hauling missions, and for mining, you can load a mining vehicle in the back and go mining with ease :3 Good for some battles though pays to have someone in the turret to defend your flank against smaller-faster ships.

Excellent break down Sub. I totally agree. I also probably have the unpopular opinion that the Freelancer could potentially be fun fully crewed once there are lots of things to do in Star Citizen (5 years from now lol?). I really get the "camping trip" vibe from it. You and your 4-5 best friends go out for a weekend trip for profit and fun. It's not the flashiest way to go, but you'll get to know each other better!

Aye, it was developed in that spirit long before all the giant ships were thought up and everyone realized those would never get enough people to crew them along with all the other ships everyone now has, so they started giving them fewer seats and the npc crew thing. Before that the whole bridge commander idea working together with 4-5 of your best friends was really hot. I don't see any particular reason to change the freelancer though. That cargo will need to be loaded and unloaded physically, not bloop and it's gone like the mock-up does at the moment. It's that overcrowded industrial shrimping boat type deal, or go camping in a DUR yes. ;) I also have fond memories of glitching in the old one in ye olde area 18 with a bunch of random people, because it was the only way to finally see them space pixels up close.

The engine connection to the hull looks like it could still rotate for VTOL but the pilot would need to watch out for a wing strike. I do wish the cockpit had a better window. the one on the MISC Prospector would work. I used to use a excel spreadsheet at a previous job to print a repair estimate and had set it up with 3 different templates depending on how many repairs were needed. I'm getting used to the loadouts being in a different video. A nice touch for people who just want to see your loadout recs.

So far, I'm the only player I've met who owns the Freelancer DUR. I bought it in like 2013 because exploration is totally my jam. I know exploration isn't in the game yet, but I'd still like to see the DUR get more love. What it has going for it right now is that huge fuel tank. With the XL1 quantum drive installed it zaps all over the system and never has to refuel with 5000 units (!) of fuel it lets you move around very quickly and finish missions in a hurry, or pick people up- whatever.

3:11 that thruster being there is actually a glitch that 3.9 had. i noticed it on my dur and its definitely not supposed to be there, and as of 3.11 the thrusters are not there anymore. i think it was potentially to fix an afterburner glitch or something, as the vent it was covering is itself a thruster used to slow down the ship, but the actual circle piece should not have been there.

That speaker thing isn't supposed to be there, I'm pretty sure that's a bug, or the artists slapped an extra retro thruster there temporarily because of the new flight model, it looks really odd and out of place, I'm pretty sure they plan to remove it again and put it somewhere else on the ships hull.

I've had my Freelancer since, well since before it was flying in the verse, and could not agree more. Yes, it's a bit of a tub and slower than many, but always able to out run trouble when needed.

as much as the cockpit restricts a players visibility , lets keep in mind if Armour comes in to play in a later stage , that windows do not add protection against incoming fire, shields can only withstand so much until all that stands beside you and the vacuum of space is a thin see through shield. I can understand from MSI's perspective to add the protection of its crew by narrowing the risk window.

I’m enjoying these to the point but thorough looks at various ships. Looking forward for the Mercury to see your take/recommendations. I bought into SC on the base Freelancer. I wanted a versatile multi crew multi role ship that wasn’t too big or expensive. And I can’t stand the Cutlass aesthetic. I melted it because the flight deck view was just too restrictive for me with my visual disability. The MFD layout was a similar issue. The fluorescent strip light style and material sets in the interior also hurt my eyes (and just gives me the piles). If we can eventually change the interior lighting and materials, I’d consider a Freelancer in game at sone point.

QUESTION (from someone who has created an account but not bought a "package"). Today is Dec 26th, 2020... if i buy a ship I could do missions (or whatever) where I could earn in game currency that I could then buy more ships? 1) could I (would I) get killed by players 2) how would these deaths affect my income and lastly 3) is the world persistent or would my progress get wiped at some point?

You can do missions, you can mine in a IRL purchased ship, you can mine in an ingame purchased ground vehicle, You can mine by hand, You can Trade legal and illegal cargo. Much much more to come. You can be killed by players at almost anytime, you are more likely to get killed in certain (avoidable) areas or while trading/mining in popular areas. Death while trading is the worst as you would loose all income invested in commodities. Death while mining would cost as much as what was destroyed. Death any other time would just cost you time. Progress WILL be wiped at some point. The next wipe that is guaranteed is before beta release (years from now). However a wipe could happen at anytime. We have been wipe free for almost a year now. You will looose anything purchased or gained through playing the game. IRL bought Items will always persist. This is not a finished game. It's not a beta it is an alpha (Before Beta) So expect bugs. You are essentially purchasing the ability to test a videogame during its creation. Hope this helps.

I like how much firepower the Freelancer can bring into a firefight. When you are going against NPCs and run all CF-337s there is almost nothing that they throw at you, you won't be able to handle. I think I need to buy a MIS one day since that one seems to fit my playstyle the best ^^

Well it won't be great at combat but it will be superb at cargo hauling. Id say the MAX and MIS are the best freelancers for sure. This one is only $110 normally.

I like the freelancer. If I wasn't routinely flying things quite a bit bigger or smaller than it, I'd definitely find it's a pretty decent ship. Arguably I'd favour the MAX over the base, simply due to what I'd use a ship like this for, but it's a solid enough design in most ways...

I've owned a Cutty, and IMO the Lancer is a better choice...Although I ended up at the MAX version, I LOVE that ship! The only thing I liked better on the Cutty was the pilot view and the general styling of it. To be fair the Lancer 'nose' has always bugged be and reminded me of a frog. I'd love it if they revisited the design of the cockpit too, but I don't expect they will, and I'm ok with that.

Yeah, that seemed a bit of a reach to me as well. But we don't currently have any carriers so it's a bit hard to judge what kind of ships will fit on a carrier deck and what will not. On the other hand, I've heard that if you're careful with the landing, a Freelancer will fit into an 890 jump's hangar, so I guess it's possible that this can be considered accurate...

Dear CIG, please give us a CNOU or Origin 400 series, something that competes with the freelancer/cutlass in this size range. What we have is great, but more is better. More to the point Cutlass Black vs freelancer has three main considerations: 1st: Do you have a gunner or are turrets automated yet? If yes, The cutlass outDPSes the freelancer while also being more agile. Also, the Cutlass's turret is more fun for the crew than the freelancer's, having 2 s3 guns as opposed to the freelancer's dual s2 turret, making it punchier with WAY better firing arcs. If no, freelancer has way better guns (barring convergence bug) 2nd: How strong are missiles in the current patch and do you like using them? The Cutlass is a missile boat with 6 separate s4 missiles racks (48 s1 missiles if you go that route). In 3.9, that means a cutlass can lock and fire 6 missiles simultaneously. If you fit s4 missiles, that is an alpha of over 30k dmg. If using s1, you can fire 8 salvos of six missiles, with each salvo doing about 18k. Freelancers missiles are very good, but Cutlass is among the best in the game for missiles 3rd: How tanky do you want to be? Freelancer currently has 2x the shields of a cutlass black. A skilled pvp fighter pilot will be good at staying in your blind spot on either ship, but the drake has a better turret and maneuverability but the freelancer can absorb more damage. I would consider this a wash based on your skill. Drake is easier to get ground vehicles into and out of, especially with freelancer's wonky rear turret. I personally prefer the Cutlass as my day-to-day, but my MIS is my usual bounty hunter.

The pilot view is the third worse of flyable ships, IMHO. Even with that, I prefer it to the Cutlass. I would not expect to be able to carry a cyclone, unless you intend to make the trip riding in the cyclone. :) Now, I know it isn't flyable, yet, but in the same price range is the Constellation Taurus. The loaner is the Andromeda. The Taurus is likely to be, when all is said and done, a better multi-function ship and can carry a rover. Just a thought.

it's a good ship but the view from the cockpit is about as good as the view out of an early tank they seriously need to either move the seats closer to the windows or make them larger

Huh. That price is pretty reasonable. I like looking at ingame prices because it gives you a much better sense of what the value of a ship is in lore/gameplay terms rather than the distorted prices that you pay with IRL pledges... For instance, a ground vehicle like a Cyclone is pretty cheap. At 28,500 UEC that's something almost anyone can earn in a few hours at the outmost. At 1.7 million, the freelancer is also quite cheap. Some of the dedicated military fighters cost 1.4 million. And a 350R costs about 1.45 million as well. (though a base 300i is more like 750k, so the racing premium is hefty...) That just shows you that a freelancer is clearly meant to be quite an attainable goal for someone to earn ingame no matter how badly they're doing at making money... It's also interesting to consider ships that get compared as though they're similar but the price says otherwise. Like the Constellation and 600i. The Phoenix, as a luxury variant is in and of itself almost twice the cost of any other constellation. But it's still half the price of the 600i. Even more interesting, a 600i touring is more expensive ingame than a 600i explorer (even though for the real-world pledges that's reversed.) Yeah... Ingame prices show up some weird realisations...

If you're going to drop a hundred plus dollars on a Freelancer, I would say go for the Max. Nearly twice the cargo space, and it doesn't really lose anything for that. I have over 700k UEC, and the Freelancer's 66 cargo units is starting to feel like it's too little for increasing my wealth quickly.

Here's one you didn't cover Sub, the Freelancer is one of the best stealth ships in the game. No kidding. Put all Class A stealth on it and Tarantula's. 930 EM and 4330 IR (starting).

I can't rightly say for new accounts. I bought mine with my game package. My brother has the 325a and still has his free freelancer after 3.10 went live . Other players report still having it too. However, they gave it to everyone as a workaround for a glitch in like 3.7 or something like that. I would guess that if you joined up now with a Aurora or something you might not get the loaner freelancer. I can't tell you if the alpha SC experience is for you or how to spend your money. What I can say, is while many people love their Aurora's, the general consensus seems to be that the avenger Titan is the best bang for your buck for an all-rounder. The minimum cost of entry is gonna be $45 bucks for a basic starter ship and game package. If you decide you like the game, you can upgrade to the Titan (or any other more expensive ship for that matter) and just pay the difference. You can also rent ships in game for a reasonably small amount of in-game currency to try before you buy. You can also buy almost every ship in game as of 3.10. But until the game goes to full release we all all subject to progress wipes. Hope that helps

If you're going to compar it to other ships, be fair about it and compare it with other ships of its class. Will this stand up to a Valkerie, if it gets attacked by one? How about the Constellation Taurus? Huh? How does it compare with the 600i? These are the ship I want to know about! Those are actual compatible sized vessels. I think I can figure out how it will compare to a Mustang Alpha.

In edition this is a very popular ship among new players. Adding these starter cargo ships show them what they are getting.There are more people upgrading to this ship than upgrading from. This ship is a jack of all trades I could compare it to a million ships. If it were a DUR, MAX, or MIS I could better suggest some of those ships you mentioned as competition. The Freelance is a Medium ship not a large. Comparing it to a Valkyrie is pointless because it's a drop ship and more than 3 times the price. The 600i is a $435 luxury exploration ship might be compared to a DUR. The data I show if extracted from the games files. The Taurus is not released so there is no game data. That's why I added the Andromeda. Upgrade suggestions? Are you talking about my Load-out Guide? I have made them into 2 separate sections. Dude you really need to listen to the video. I mentioned that the data for comparison is skued because I am comparing some starter cargo ships.
