our sonar man had a unit he strapped to his chest with headphones and a wand with some type of sensor at the end of the wand , he would touch it to the machinery and write down the levels displayed on his meter display , some times he would shut down the machinery until repairs could be made .. long complicated video , way above my understanding bit i'm sure they knew what they were doing ..SSBN 608 1971,1972 ..

I didnt know they use sonar man as vibration analist on board. It makes sense since the vibration is a mechanic waveform, the sonar man is basically a mechanic waveform analyst. what your sonar man was doing was analyzing the sound spectrum from the machinery, if levels increased or a particular frequency changed he would recommend to make a repair. I'm a rotating equipment vibration analyst and very recently i discovered some resemblances with sonar man.

You don't let the magnet with accelerometer snap like at 13:06. The sensor is very delicate and expensive.

So those measurements are also used to determine condition of machinery? (as the noises and vibration are measured monthly or any 6 months they have references to compare, it may be possible to point certain wear or misfunction depending of the frequency changes is it?

Yes, these measurements determine when machines have to be upgraded, replaced, or fixed.

Yes and by seeing which frequency are predominant you can also figure out which component is wearing or misfunctioning.
