Both released games have you play as a black person, meaning this new game is the first time you can play as a white protagonist (assuming the white girl in the trailer is playable) and the protagonist from the first game wasn't exactly a supermodel (he had nice hair though). Furthermore both games had backstory audio logs which mention characters in lesbian relationships. I don't think the overall fandom really has a problem with "Woke" aspects of the game. It's been there from the start.

The thing that made the first subnautica so good is there is zero talking from the main character, and the only dialogue you heard was from the audio files you collected which revealed the story as you went along. What’s ironic is that the people behind things like this are causing the very racism they claim to be fighting against. The character in the first game didn’t have any character, and for good reason. It allowed the player to immerse themselves more fully in the experience. That the character model was white and male was barely noticeable because it wasn’t important. In fact, the only thing you learn about him is how unimportant he is. That lets the player define their importance and place themselves in the role. Then Below Zero screwed up this vital aspect by making the player character and her sister important and defined. But not just important, oh so righteous and moral because they’d _never_ sell out to Altera. Seeing the character designs in the trailer definitely isn’t a good look. But part of me hopes there’s just a simple character creator or something and there won’t be any humans talking. But maybe I’m just being naive for trying to give them any benefit of the doubt.

The reason people have issues with these character designs is because they don't look human. Sure on the surface level they look human from distance but when you have an up close visage the eyes are two small, the eye distance is far to wide, the nose is too big for eye placement, the mouth is over extended, and the overall head shape is just beyond what a normal person would have making it outside and inside the uncanny valley at the same time. Character designs like 2B, 9S, Bayonetta, even something like Jack from Jack and Daxter have the necessary proportions body wise to look human from afar and up close.

Riley from the first game always did look a bit goofy, it was just a part of the art style they went with, the two we see in the new trailer are less goofy looking in comparison to him ironically enough. You never really saw or Heard Riley if you did not look for it. It wasn't FORCED(remember how that part is what people complain about?). Now BZ already started out with Robin talking to her contact and then her weird Interactions with Allan. I had no problems with how Margret was, but with how she was alive in the first place. The plot in itself also didn't make much Sense, the later Change was noticeable. And then there was the entire Drama about how simons got fired.

The whole representation thing blows up when the first game basically showed a pair of gloves all the time. Instead it needs to be specified to irrelevant* detail, and from there you will always face the complaint that box xyz didn't get as much attention as others. [* irrelevant: any sexual orientation other than pescesexual when by yourself in a game full of fish] Not being able to empathise with a character unless it's essentially "you" shows a major problem in your own development. That's not for everyone else to adapt to. It's for you to address.
