According to developer Brian Cummings, the Sea Emperor Leviathan was always intended to be passive and was only shown as aggressive in the early access cinematic trailer as the Sea Dragon Leviathan had not been modelled and the Reaper Leviathan was yet to be conceptualised. This left the Sea Emperor Leviathan as the only suitable candidate.

Man it's been a long time, and when you realise that the graphics were ultra good for 8 years ago and now most people cry about stuff like "it doesn't look 2K what is this?" while I'm happy even with medium quality water. I love this game, it scared the cr'p out of me but I still love it. The only thing I could request is a multiplayer mode because I'm playing on a console, but for anything else this game was made with so much love and dedication, it's a masterpiece

It's called the Emperor Leviathan, and the Reaper Leviathan is already out, but still being built as well as the Emperor, the Reaper has a animation and is as big as the Cyclops, while the Emperor is just a tiny creature, but in a future update, I bet it'll be huge, they aren't out as in you can find them in the game, you have to spawn them in

For everyone commenting on the Sea Emperor supposedly being hostile, heres the thing. That's not the Sea Emperor. I mean, it is... in model. But not in audio. That roar? That's a Sea Dragon. I think what happened is, when this trailer came out, the team didnt have the Sea Dragon model ready, so they just used the closest thing they had. That being the Sea Emperor.

Very unlikely, for it to be so deep in the water that so much time has passed without us even catching a glimpse of it, it's probably dead because of how little life there is in the deepest parts of the sea, and the crushing water pressures would have probably turned it into a pancake by now.

Given the appearance of the sea emperor and what it does in this trailer, I think it should be a deep-sea stealth predator, inhabiting places like the grand reef and the area near the floating island. It should attack using a different set of tactics than the highly aggressive (and smaller) reaper leviathan, such as stalking the player (or its natural prey), swimming up slowly, and making a swift strike with little warning, engulfing the player or the seamoth with its mouth or using its arms to grab the Cyclops, praying-mantis style, and inflicting damage. I swear, if this creature attacks by jumpscares, it could really raise the scariness to "heart attack" level. It'll be awesome, though I might need to gather quite a bit of courage to return to my base at the grand reef.

Adrian Heys Maybe. I like to think that this creature is more like a praying mantis with those arms and the jaws it has with small mandibles on the side. Perhaps it will prefer to attack big things like the cyclops and the reapers, sneaking up on them and grabbing them from the side and chewing them in half. Or if it gets into a fight, it could slash with its blade arms, grab with its tentacles, and deliver crushing bites. Its narrow jaw looks like it is for crushing while the small side mandibles are for tearing, add to that the bioluminescense, dark coloration, four eyes, and a set of tentacles that could propel it in strong bursts like an octopus, and you got a nighttime/deep-sea-dwelling stealth killer that hunts large prey, like canyon striders and reaper leviathans.
