A subnet is a logical subdivision of an IP network. The process of dividing a network into two or more networks is called subnetting. In this video, I will use an example to demonstrate a simple way of subnetting.
Some background links
• Tricks to five classes...
Example used in the video:
One day your supervisor walks to you, saying: “here is the network ID 192.168.4.0/24, please create three separate networks or subnets for a coffee shop: Sunny Cafe.” The three separate subnets/networks are: One is for the office, one for the front desk and storage room, and one is for public use.
Your task is to list each subnet network ID, subnet mask, Host ID Range, # of usable host IDs, and Broadcast ID. One last question: How many subnets are wasted after subnetting?
Subnetting Practice
With the same network ID: 192.168.4.0/24, you are required to get 6 subnets. List each of new network ID, subnet mask, host ID range, # of usable hosts, and broadcast ID. One last question: how many subnets are wasted after subnetting?
Answer for your reference:
We will have 8 subnets. subnet mask is /27 for all 8 subnets. The number of usable host IDs is 30 for all 8 subnets. I list below 8 subnets’ network ID,host ID range, and broadcast ID in the order.
#1: 192.168.4.0, 192.168.4.1-192.168.4.30, 192.168.4.31
#2: 192.168.4.32, 192.168.4.33-192.168.4.62, 192.168.4.63
#3: 192.168.4.64, 192.168.4.65-192.168.4.94, 192.168.4.95
#4: 192.168.4.96, 192.168.4.97-192.168.4. 126, 192.168.4.127
#5: 192.168.4.128, 192.168.4.129-192.168.4. 158, 192.168.4.159
#6: 192.168.4.160 , 192.168.4.161-192.168.4. 190, 192.168.4.191
#7: 192.168.4.192, 192.168.4.193-192.168.4. 222, 192.168.4.223
#8: 192.168.4.224, 192.168.4.225-192.168.4. 254, 192.168.4.255

On each other requirement and process, there are plenty of other tricks and techniques on how to do subnetting in the wild. Knowing all of them can give you confusions and complications. Sunny! I just got out of a Network+ exam which I passed, and memorizing your subnetting table and writing it down the moment I was allowed to write notes during the test was critical for answering 2 of the test questions correctly. Considering how close my passing score was, I give you and this video in particular significant credit for it. Thank you. Also, your accent - while very obviously Chinese - is clear enough that the *vast* majority of English speakers could understand it. So don't worry about the accent. Its certainly better than what I could do in any Chinese language or dialect!

Man @Sunny Classroom, I just have to thank you so much. I am bouncing between about 4 online CCNA courses, a few different KZbin videos, and online explanations, and I just could understand bits and pieces of subnetting. I picked up the binary conversions, how to turn a slash notation into decimal notation, etc. But I had a very hard time grasping the concept of how to lay out subnets from a single network ID. As someone with ADD, struggling every day to get this, trying to better myself, I am just so grateful that I stumbled upon this video. I literally just typed in Fun Subnetting on KZbin and your video was the first to pop up. You made this very simple as the video title states. I just opened up a word document, added a few tables, made the Sunny Table, and then did the rest, checked the video after to make sure I did it correctly. You are awesome!

Can I ask what the purpose of the subnet is? Or why it starts at 24? Thank you again
@laurellaoang6840
@laurellaoang6840 2 жыл бұрын
@@Spellcaster12449 it starts with /24 because the network type he used to demonstrate is type C. We have variety of Subnet Mask types like A(255.0.0.0), B(255.255.0.0) and C(255.255.255.0). Type A Subnet Mask is /8, type B is /16 and, type C is /24. Where did those numbers come from? Well, technically they are the equivalent counts of their bits. Eight bits (11111111 binary) is equivalent to 255 in decimal so, (255.0.0.0) has 8 bits. For type B subnet mask(255.255.0.0), we have two 255s therefore 8 x 2 = 16, and since we have three 255s in subnet mask type C the answer will be 24 (8 x 3 = 24).

SUNNY!!!! I already “knew” what was on this video but didn’t understand. Your way of teaching is way better for how my brain learns. I’m really happy to find the right teacher because I have spent a LOT of time trying to understand concepts. My problem is that I can’t learn the rules, remember what to do and then implement what I learned. I have to understand what’s happening or my brain just farts. Thank you! I just took a screenshot of the Sunny Table, printed it out, & tacked it on the wall!

If I had teachers like this in college I would have graduated Summa Cum Laude. Instead I had guys that couldn't teach, could hardly speak English or just read from a textbook. Though Sunny is not native English speaking, he is very easy to understand. Great job Sunny. You should be Professor.

There are many talented brilliant people out there, but unfortunately, you come across them too late. I've completed whole cisco routing semester, still was unable to create subnets so easy as watching just this one video. Sunny, many thanks to you for going out of your way to explain the subject so thoroughly. Keep up the good work

My Network professor kept saying how hard teaching subnetting was and would dumb down our lectures because of it. We then had to do a network design project, which due to our curtailed lessons, nobody knew how to do and our professor got annoyed because of it. This video explained it so clearly. Thank you, Sunny! I should be paying you my college tuition.

Thank you so much for this. To be honest this is probably the simplest and cleanest explanation/expression of subnetting. I totally needed this. I transitioned to IT from legal. Currently in a IT role and I'm looking to move up within my company. I am studying for the Google IT Support certificate to help me prepare for the Comptia A+ cert.

I'd say go straight for the A+ or Net+. I have never seen the Google IT cert being mentioned in job applications. The ITIL, maybe, but even then you can go straight for the A+ or Net+.

I've been in IT for a looooong time and this is the simplest explanation and most valuable tool I've seen for subnetting ever. With the exception of perhaps very entry-level exams (I think), I've never had to know binary to decimal conversion for any reason except for subnetting. And now I don't even need it for that. Thanks Sunny. Best, Mike.

Before this video, I have taken courses and classes and none of them, despite being paid content, explained it as well as you did. Please do not feel your accent got in the way of this excellent material. If anything your accent was comforting, clear, and you did an outstanding job. Thank you!
