Douglas Murphy jacks intelligence is said to be great but I don't think he was ever taught basic skills. Hos parents ignored him and never spent time with him and thus why he must have taken to building robots in the first place. He is scientifically a genius. But I don't think he has basic skills due to the neglect. Though to be honest I think they threw in some really dumb stuff just to make jack sound even more pathetic.
