Back in 1980 I took a job as an assistant manager at a woolco department store . These stores were related to Woolworth. At Christmas they had train sets on display along with accessories. They featured ahm locomotives as an extra purchase with the train set. What didn't sell at Christmas was put in a stockroom for the next year. The amount of handling they went through was incredible as that stockroom was condensed and reorganized with each seasonal change during the year. One pacific had not sold for several years. So were born many issues with individual locomotives. Most stockroom work was performed by teenagers who were not exactly career minded. Just a thought to share. I love ahm steamers by rivarrossi and were happy with some of the diesels. Thank you for your program .

He must have mailed those to you before he saw the last couple of videos, lol. The Dremel motor made less noise than the loco motor. Nice job fixing that. You restored the loco and your confidence.

Hi, That rear truck with the missing spring is called a trailing truck, and as you said, the front one is the pilot truck. Another way to fix the missing driveshaft problem would be go back to my old radio controlled (RC) days when I was running both gas and electric boats (and a couple of float planes). We would use a length of piano wire for the prop shaft and a piece of rubber tubing for the universal, so a short length of similar sized piano wire to the gearbox and motor shafts and two pieces of tight tubing. Another great video. An FYI: all older Rivarossi (your particular 2-10-2 started production in 1966) were designed for a rather wide 18" radius curves. I say wide radius as similar era Marklin 2-10-0's were cleverly engineered for 14" radius curves. Have to remember back in the day it was fairly standard practice to have 15" radius - large curves meant 18". Like everything as manufacturers started going for scale length (mainly coach length) the need for larger and larger radii became apparent. And no, it's not toy train stuff: it's to accommodate a model railway in a smaller area, and modellers were happy with that.

Super. That motor looks different from my Rovarossi 2-10-2 model, and they usually have two black round plastic driveshafts with rectangular holes in both ends. I saved all summer to buy this locomotive, many decades ago. It was my first steam locomotive with a tender. I ran the daylights out of it, constantly, inside and outside, and it actually survived and operates to this day on my railroad. (Many other locomotives haven't survived my railroad.) I had an interesting accident with mine. I was operating on a friends layout when one of his four light train yard floodlights on a mast (Remember those? Mine ran so hot.) decided that white glue wasn't going to hold its base to the ground, (What nail holes in the base?) and it tipped over right in front of my train and catapulted the locomotive only off the edge of layout right onto the floor. I checked and it wasn't looking all that bad, a few scratches, a few pieces, until the short vertical driveshaft fell on to the floor in two pieces. Well, it turns out that an old school code 100 track connector is exactly the right size to replace the short driveshaft and fits the driveshaft connection with a minor squeeze. I have been meaning to replace the track connector with a driveshaft or tubing for years now, but the code 100 track connector driveshaft works great and delivers the freight. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N. Edit: I modified my 2-10-2 slightly by filing the frame a little narrower in between the second set of driving wheels and the fourth and fifth set, so mine will easily take 18" radius snap track curves. I added about four ounces of weight, glass in the windows, and a back up tender headlight. It has almost 50 years worth of patina and weathering, and it looks very realistic, and runs great. There's one thing that I noticed right away with this locomotive which is the motor is not an original Rivarossi motor. The motor looks to be from a CD player spindle motor. Somewhere, I heard of guys using these motors to replace the old Rivarossi motors. This may also explain the funny wiring with this locomotive and the missing drive shaft which was lost or didn't work from the start of the project. It looks like you were the lucky person to finish the project and get it going again. One thing can be said about this locomotive, now; It runs.

If I were having you repair a locomotive for me, I'd be on top of it at every moment just in case you have a question or whatever. I'd be attentive and available. Sometimes I don't understand other folks. With age comes wisdom and I'm now 73. Now that was a very nice fix. I purchased a few traction tires off fleaBay and they were clear so you couldn't really see them. I use a ton of 2-56 screws since I use Kadee couplers and have the tap and drill set for 2-56 screws. I would have tapped the hole for a 2-56 screw, but then to each his own. Cheers from eastern TN

Well done!. When it comes to curve radius on layouts I found in my own case, that 22" radius is best as a minimum for the outer mainlines. Anything else tighter than 22" I run smaller steam and diesel locos on that. Freight switchers, doodle bugs, trolleys ,etc., etc..

Well done but as you said probably most amount of drive wheels you can expect on your curve is 8 so as long as you can get it to travel on straight lengths you've tested as much as you can well done

Not the original motor. It was a black, flat motor with the output shaft in the lower corner. The drive shaft was a black plastic tube. But you did good. I bet you could put one of your dollar motors in. motors in.
