We make similar mixture for shoemakers in USA but we add beeswax, pine tar and oil. It’s called ‘COAD’ here and I think they do the same in the UK. Very interesting, thank you for sharing your methods!! I really like the idea of putting the mixture on flexible leather and using this to apply to the linen thread. That is a great idea! Ty! ;)

Hi Ken, love your work! The resin directly from the tree contains turpentine, which is used as solvent for many things. Pine resin is distilled to separate the turpentine from it. What remains is a brittle matter called "rosin". This is what we can buy. It is used as electical insulation, for various laquers and it's also what you rub on violin bows etc to make them catch the strings better. Rosin is soluable in acetone, undistilled pine resin not. To remove resin stains from clothes you will need turpentine again 😉 I guess what you used for your cobblers wax is rosin. It's whats used in all the recipes I have seen so far. Best regards, keep up the good work

I think if you carefully cook the collected pine resin for a bit of time you are allready removing trace components and some of the turpentine. If you then pour it through a fine strainer and let it dry you should be able to make cobblers wax with the result. All the properties you need for the threads should be given. But perhaps you will have to change the recipe as the pine resin will probably be a bit softer and less bridle than proper rosin, because it still has some more oils and the turpentine working as a natural solvent. But regarding that for cobblers wax you need to soften the substance anyway it shouldn't be an issue. How much beeswax do you use? i think you didn't say in the video. Thanks for your great videos! I really enjoy watching them!
