"Carry Method" is the method I was thought at school. But now that you have explained "Borrow Method" in your previous video this method somehow appears cumbersome.

+MrVoayer I still like this method. The advantage that it has is that the pattern is the same regardless of the existence of zeros in the minuend (top number). Actually, I find many of these methods to be enjoyable to use and switch between them ... just for variety :-) I guess it is a bit like having a variety of tools that can be used on a job and feeling the freedom to use them interchangeably, even though one or two of them might be better designed for the particular job at hand.

With our Common Core math, this method should be included, but it isn't. The idea of Common Core, is to expose the student to the many ways of viewing a problem, so this carrying should be more "common" now, not less. Instead, I see teachers interchangeably using the term "carrying" and "borrowing" for borrowing only. Or sometimes, they say carrying is reserved for addition problems. Thank you for sharing this!

You are welcome, Giorgio. I am not trained as a primary school teacher, so I am concerned that I may not use some of the 'modern' terminology for these foundational skills/operations. Nevertheless, I felt that it was worth my sharing a few algorithms that people could consider. I am glad that you found this helpful and worth commenting on.

How to do 900-7
@CrystalClearMaths3 ай бұрын
In the units column, we cannot subtract 7 from 0. We add ten to the units column in the top number (forming a 10 in the units column), and add ten to the lower number by placing a 1 in the tens column. In the units column, we now subtract 7 from 10 to obtain the answer 3. In the tens column, we now have 0 minus 1. We perform the same manoeuvre to obtain 10 minus 1, resulting in 9 for the tens column. The hundreds column now contains the subtraction 9 minus 1 which results in an 8. The final answer is 893.
