With both of those together you'll be able to know the right words to say to someone in any situation.

If we take Sun Tzu the author of “Art of War” for example, Naturalist - basic level - because he needs to know the geography of the battlefield and the seasons and needs to make maps of the battlefield but not too deep knowledge as to be a geologist. Musical - unnecessary Logical - deep knowledge is necessary. A general needs to make decisions based on logic and not on emotions. Interpersonal - deep knowledge is necessary as a general needs to first guess what the opponent is going to do next and be prepared Bodily kinesthetic - deep knowledge - as a warrior he needs to be in full control of his physical faculties and also work on his sword and other weapons Linguistic verbal - deep knowledge about communication skills made him write an all time great classic like art of war Interpersonal - medium knowledge - he must have introspected a lot on his past and must have come to an understanding about his strengths and weaknesses Existential - unnecessary. if a warrior thinks too much without acting then he will lose the “pouncing ability” and it will create self doubt Visual spatial - unnecessary.

i’ve learned these through out my whole college life, and Howard Gardner is my favorite of all the proponents ever! His study which is the Multiple intelligences is just sooo superb helpful especially in understanding a persons intuition and perspective. Actually most jobs require only a low level of intelligence, they require commitment (demonstrated by jumping through hoops like getting a college degree) and obedience, (doing what you’re told when you’re told). They don’t pay you to think.

I think I connect with the visual_spacial intelligence because I have a hobby which is baking and whenever I decide to bake a cake or something sweet, I always try to imagine the final decoration look of the cake and try to bring new decoration ideas ,and the final result is often the same as I did imagine.

I just got the book written in 1983 and revised in 2011, and it looks like the theory has been updated or expanded since this was published where for instance there is no existential intelligence and the Personal intelligence category is not broken down into two separate categories. I like to see that evolution.

As an educator, I understand the importance of recognizing the varied strengths and abilities of our students, both of which can be exercised and improved. But Gardner and proponents of his theory propose multiple discrete intelligences which can not be measured by some underlying factor. It must be noted that Gardner himself recognizes that the individuals he offers as examples for each of his intelligences would all likely score above average on traditional IQ tests. This is because all scientific evidence points to a very real, measurable general intelligence. We cannot will away the fact that some people are smarter than others, nor should we want to if we recognize that intelligence is simply a trait, like height, and not a measure of worth.

Thanks for your comment! I think the discrepancy comes about because "intelligence" is a word with many meanings and connotations. For example, someone with high IQ intelligence, may have very low social intelligence or emotional intelligence. And we use that word "intelligence" in all those contexts, not to mention many more. My goal with these videos is always simply to spark thought, discussion, and hopefully greater understanding. I certainly am not speaking directly for Gardner or anyone else (there's plenty of videos where people interview him directly). He's also changed his viewpoint over time which he is allowed to do, and I certainly do as well as I teach more and more students. These topics are extremely complex, and one of the things I love most about teaching is that there are an infinite amount of layers to it. As soon as we think we understand something, we only find there is more to learn :) Thanks so much for watching and sharing!

Three years ago I took my first IQ test, which included a half day of exams by a psychologist, and I figured there'd be one number resulting and I'd walk around for the rest of my life with that number branded in my mind. I learned just what you outlined here - there is no one measure. I scored at varying levels ways on different tests. I have learned my strengths and less strong areas of intellectual functioning.

This is a very great video and theory to discuss. Even though IQ is important for intellectual and academic ability at all levels, other gifts and talents are well needed to you make our world brighter. There are so many ways to be profound gifted besides IQ like singing, building, dancing, art, math, science, history, empathy and emotional intelligence, cooking, music, sports, writing, verbal ability, etc. This should be celebrated in our school and in our daily environment.

Yes completely agree! Some types of intelligence can have a higher economic value or social currency value, but they're all intrinsically equal. If you look at societies from other eras or geographic locations, the types of intelligence that are more prized are always different.

I easily got A's in calculus 1 and 2, linear algebra, AP physics in high school and college, but those tests were entirely predictable and I could study for them ahead of time. I think most of my courses were like that. I don't seem to do well with tests I have no way of studying or preparing for ahead of time. I had an IQ test years ago and it came back average. I think I have a relative that scored better than me on an IQ test, but would never be able to get a math degree like myself. Are there different types of intelligence? Predictable intelligence vs creative intelligence (new problems a test taker has never seen before). I was bad at sports which can be unpredictable, but in my prime was able to juggle 5 balls for 30 catches, which was entirely predictable.

Yes, this makes a lot of sense! There's actually a lot of different types of IQ tests, and you'll score differently depending on which one you take. Also academic success and IQ score are correlated, but they're not the same thing. As you mentioned, you know all the material ahead of time on an academic test. On an IQ test, it's purposely meant to surprise you and force you to think on your feet. It's designed not be predictable. Thanks for sharing your insight!

IQ is obviously not the only predictor of academic success/life success. Still, IQ and the trait 'conscientiousness' are the best factors to predict success. A lower IQ means you will have to invest more hours into studying compared to another student in your class that has a higher IQ, because he will process information faster and will be able to memorize it easier. Still if you have a hard-working ethic and invest much into it you will be able to make up for it to a certain degree. And to your question, the IQ literature suggests that there are no such differences in intelligence. The data shows that there is one g-factor (general factor of intelligence) that is mostly responsible for all your intelligence performance. This theory is the most valid up to today and has a very high reliability. It shows that there is a fluid intelligence which contains processing of information, problem-solving, abstract thinking, memorising ability and how fast you learn new concepts. And it shows that there is a cristalline intelligence which is dependant on experience and information. It basically means all the information a human gathers over the course of life. This explains how people with higher IQ can know less than people with lower IQ that are more interested in the world itself, because they can just gain more knowledge by reading more or gathering information otherwise. So they are high in cristalline intelligence but lower in fluid intelligence as the compared individual.

@@ts214121 Yeah if you are naturally good at juggling you are most likely genetically gifted for that specific ability. Probably your genes code for a good communication between neurons that are at your muscle fibres which leads to a good coordination aswell as a good muscle memory. But again, this has no correlation with your intelligence. Because the definition of intelligence has nothing to do with the concept of multiple intelligences that is shown in the video above. Most of the "intelligences" are simply talents or personal traits, like the ability to be good at music or sports, but don't say anything about your IQ. If you're interested in IQ science I recommend you check out the theory of the G-Factor by Charles Spearman, which is very widespread among scientist. Also I can recommend you to read about the concepts of fluid and crystallized intelligence by the psychologist Raymond Cattell.

So which type of intelligence does tradesmen belong? I struggle with higher Math subjects, anything that includes scientific analysis,equation or sometimes conversating with other people since english is my second language. However when it comes to practical problem solving stuff like DIY, why a certain structure fail or how to reinforce something to make it more stable or last longer I seemed to pick it up instantly. Thesame reason why my wife says I am very meticulous about things and easily being amazed when I see engineered structures etc.
