My parents lived in a HOA subdivision and even got told which type of flowers/vegetables, trees they were allowed to have. Please get a copy of the HOA rules and read carefully. Nothing worse than getting things planted and then find out it's not allowed.

Rhoda, that was my thought exactly. Some hoa's have what amounts to a dictatorship! I had to spend over $450 for a certain kind of mailbox in a new build development. Never again. Please re and re-read the rules Bri. You may have to have a face to face meeting complete with diagrams to be allowed to garden. I do Luke the suggestion of free flowing beds. Tall flowers can hide a lot of veggies. Blessings to you and your children

I had a military food garden. It had to not look like food. No rows. I got creative with curvy shapes and never planted long lines on crops. I made several drawings (crude) of ideas for intermixing veggies with flowers so the command wouldn’t notice. Make it a goal to create lovely spaces and your neighbors won’t mind. I do think you attract attention with rows or obvious garden. If shtf, you want friendly neighbors, and also hidden food is a good idea.

This. Tuck your lettuce/spinach/greens under your flowers, the shade will help keep it from bolting too soon, & if you sow every 10 days or so, you'll have salad all summer. Plant lots of flowers, especially in the front yard. It'll dazzle everybody & they won't bother you about what's growing out back. PS - I hate HOAs, but get on its Board & make lots of friends, & all of you can change the HOA rules. Talking point: It takes half as much water to grow a garden compared to a lawn because you don't water the paths in a garden.

Bri, I humbly suggest that you plan a multi-layer privacy fence. Deer don't like to jump multiple fences or really wide fences. On the "deer side" plant some things they like to eat to encourage them to not explore further..or plant things that can create a six foot barrier they won't want to eat or jump. Your fruit bushes you don't want to share with deer can be inside of that. As for meat rabbits, great idea. However, if you can have a shed under HOA rules, I would recommend keeping rabbits in a shed and landscaping around it so it looks nice. Rabbits in trackers will draw attention of the HOA plus they don't do so well on the ground.

Hi Bri. I’ve never liked HOAs... but sometimes we don’t have a choice. I’ve heard of people having quail in their garages. (Neighbors don’t have to know). Plus , they’re really quiet. Your house is very beautiful and you probably have enough room to put a couple of shelves with grow lights to grow some microgreens and sell them to neighbors or on FB marketplace to start. Some people are making a good living from selling microgreens. I’m glad to see you happy, with hope and making plans for the future. I understand. Single mom with 5 sons. They’re adults now and with The Lord’s guidance they’re doing very well now. It does take time to heal but seeking God’s face daily, having friends and fellowship helps tremendously. 😊

Hi Bri. As a fellow now-single-parenting, homeschooling, believer mama also setting up her homestead on a small acreage, I too am looking at making all the hedging, etc edible. I still like a fairly neat and tidy landscaping look (and am pretty sure the neighbours and onlookers do also), so one of my goal is to do hedging that is a block of numerous one particular fruit (am not sure if you have feijoas where you are, but I have had success previously creating a 'garden room' by planting multiple feijoa trees to create a screening, yet fruitful hedge). Striking your own fruit tree cuttings means you can achieve the multiple tree outcome, yet work within your budget. Hedging that has that manicured, landscaped plan to it will keep your close urban neighbours feeling open to the idea of what you are doing IF it looks still very much like it adds monetary value to the overall street via beautiful street appeal. I am delighted for you that you are getting back into homesteading again. Know that a fellow mama, down here in Aotearoa New Zealand, is cheering you on and is very much looking forward to watching your new season unfold. You go Mama!

Bri quail are not totally considered live stock and can be kept in versatile areas . They make great bird pets and eggs. Hint hint most HOAs will consider them a pet. Some have silly rules tho like two birds a cage. Also that hedge would be a great place for a grape black berry and raspberry vineyard/ trellis. I definitely would get some fig trees/ blue berries in that semi shady area as well. You might be able to get a good rhubarb plant to take off in that mulchy area. One other suggestion if you can get away with it get/ build you a small shed/ green house room combo going. I mentioned quail because I know someone who takes rabbit and quail bedding and clean out material and mixes it with a small amount of compost and uses it as fertilizer on certain plants and trees. One more suggestion let the kids do seed start zipper storage bags with a seed in a damp paper towel. Oh don't forget to grow up ( stake and tie) your viney plants tomatoes beans peas cucumbers and some melons. I have personally tried this and used the pinch prune method leaving the biggest healthiest branches and as they grow up wrapping and tying the vines. You can also do a heighted pole system with one piece garden wire at the top then as your plant grow upward tie them in to force them to grow up instead of out saving you valuable garden space. Love y'all glad you're back and your home is lovely as it is but I understand the craving to get growing. Sending lots of love and prayers to y'all from Northern West Virginia 💕

Bri, I'm not far from you and we have both deer and racoon pressure on the garden (a surprise, since I just moved here last year!). It's my sister's place so I had no way of fencing things, but I did haver VERY GOOD SUCCESS with a motion activated sprinkler. The only down side is that in our configuration my tomatoes did tend to get too wet and so more issues with mildew. However I did have a couple of solid harvests after the garden was initially wiped out and I got the sprinklers. It may be just one weapon you might arm yourself with.

Bri this is a opportunity for you to educate your neighborhood about how beneficial chickens and gardens can be. With the pandemic everyone's food security is high on the priority. Go to the HOA board meeting and ask them to come out and view your ideas. Maybe you could get 6 chickens

Bri, the tree area where you want to do the perennial herbs/flowers is also a great place for strawberries, onions, asparagus, potatoes and other root crops as you peel back the mulch. then relocate that mulch to the other mulch areas to keep the mulch up. Also, maybe a few raised beds on the street side of your garden put removable netting on the edges to "fence" the bed and the bed blocks the view of the space some.

HOA's can be really tricky, Bri. They may consider the rabbits as livestock if you are raising them as meat and not pets. could you do tbar fencing? those are not permanent. Just push in the posts and stretch the mesh across, secure with zip-ties. You could run some fairy lights on it and grow sweetpeas to disguise it. It could be very pretty and keep the babies safe and the deer out. For urban hedging,,,,,, rose hips are high in vitamin C. Elderberry, currant: red, white, black; blue berry, raspberry, plums, pears... depends on the region. And permanent beds for asparagus, artichoke. save that cardboard for mulching, composting, raised beds..... it also works to line open compost frames to keep stuff from flying around! Maybe take some time to see what your neighbours are doing / growing in their gardens. It is easier to see what you could opt for with in the HOA rules Lovely home Bri! Probably age former owners fid the landscaping and the mulching right before they put it on the market! Enjoy your spring!

Hi Bri. I’m 4 minutes in and have some thought. First, poultry. Can you consider quail in your garage? I’ve never raised them but have heard of many people urban type areas raising them. I see a large door area under your home? Is there space down there? You could use led lighting on timers to mimic daylight? Next there is a product called bone sauce. I think put out by perma pastures farm (something like that) that could be an invisible fence for the deer. Again, I’ve never used it but have seen testimonials that it works quite well. Back to the video….

I haven't read all of the comments yet, so this may have been mentioned. Look into square foot gardening for some of your garden space, also remember that you can grow up on trellises. So any vine veggies can got up instead of all over the land. Planter boxes with trellises on the backside. You can square foot in the box and they grow up on the trellis. You probably know this, but if you do not, put 4 T-posts angled out around each tree with fencing.

❤️’Attitude and vision’, yes that affects every single thing in life. We moved a lot with small children, change is hard. I said this, ‘ I can be happy anywhere, just tell me where it is!’ Living in limbo between places is hard. I agree with enjoying the kids at this age, they grow faster than weeds. You are ready to grow your next garden of happiness. ❤️🙏

This is PERFECT! I am an older single woman and recent urban transplant in a rural area about an hour away from you, so hopefully can utlize whatever local resources you uncover, as I too want to develop my street facing half acre into an obscured homestead. Across from me is a deer path, but they're a bit more skittish here, as there's hunting in the area. Bri, you are such as inspiration and testament of resilience and God's power. I look forward to following this new chapter with you all. Blessings! 🙏🏽💕

Hello from Montana! You mentioned you can’t have fences so I have an idea which worked for me with the deer…they hate walking on mesh, metal mesh panels cause they feel like they’re feet are getting tangled. You can still move the mesh to mow the grass and just lay it down again🙂. I can’t wait to see how you transform your yard to produce veggies for your family!

@@spinninggardener hello! I’m not sure the size of the chicken wire that comes in rolls…I think maybe 4 ft wide and however long you need for your garden row…if it’s not wide enough, the deer will step over it…yes they are very smart🙂. I’ve also used cattle panels cause they are heavier and don’t need to be weighed down. Hope this helps. I also cut chicken wire to go around my fruit trees

Bro my sister and her husband produced alit of veggies and fruit on their tiny lot. Even enough to can and they are in a HOA on a flag lot. Their flowers and garden are stunning. They are in their 70s and their back yard. Is so inviting with adding a few things. Their back yard neighbor has a chain link fence and you never see it because of the flower garden. Their back yard only has 4 feet of grass. It’s like a cottage garden. So I know you and the kids and grow your food on that beautiful property the Lord has given you. Love your vision and it will be a process and won’t happen overbite. Blueberry bushes are nice.

If you are thinking about selling to your neighbors I think honey would sell and funky pumpkins and squash in the fall. Growing squash on the mulch is a great idea. If deer are common in the neighborhood don't grow dwarf fruit trees. You have to get the trees tall enough to be above the deer. A big beautiful plant that will provide privacy and is deer proof is astilbe. That may be good along your living fence line.

I absolutely respect your plan for becoming as sustainable as you can and teaching that to your children, too. However, you're already maxed out, and I think it's important to recognize that. Do more buying from local farmers and video that! Plant in containers this year and maybe plant a few fruit trees and bushes. Definitely like the pumpkin/squash idea, and blackberries/raspberries on the edge of the wooded area. Go easy because of your neighborhood.
@robinscheffert9407

Suggestion...don't be too quick to get rid of the trees and bushes that are already planted on the property until you know for sure what you are going plant where. Once you know for sure and you want to get rid of trees or bushes offer the smaller ones to people to come get. From what I'm seeing on screen the sizes of some are a good size to transplants and give a nice opportunity for someone elses yard/garden. And mulch isn't that big a deal to upkeep, and can break down to make great soil for your flowers and herbs. Keep thinking outside the box and learn more ways to use what you've been given. Elderberries would be a great fruit bearing option and natural privacy fence and elderberry juice is excellent for immunity building.

Brie you could do quail and rabbit for meat or eggs. Small, quiet and generally considered a pet in smaller numbers. The size of the garage would make it easier to do and without any visibility from the street with a simple screen. You could start with microgreens for fast edibles, again easily done indoors. Construct modular, even vertical growing areas. Easier to manage, movable. Get cull wood from Lowes and Home Depot to Construct, visit your nearest Habitat ReHome for hardware and lower cost nails, screws.
