Masterful work here! I have an 89 C1500 and you just convinced me to live with my broken gear lever spring now that I know it's not that important AND both my turn signals work and the horn wire is working. No need to go in there until I have to some day! And when that day comes, I'll be back here with my check list.

Great video and great job, my friend! I had the same floppy shift lever, broken spring issue on my 1986 GMC s-15 Jimmy. Though I didn’t have an issue with needing to replace the turn signal switch or cancel cam, at least now I know what to expect should I ever have to do those jobs, too. Though I do have mechanical skills, thanks for the confidence boost your work and video gave me and for helping to make what initially seemed to me like a very daunting task to one that turned out to be quite manageable and doable!

Good Teacher. I learned many technical terms used for various parts (Experienced mechanic) and lots of exacting explanations of a very parts-rich area. For us weekend mechanics, the step of the windshield wiper switch removal was missed -"It basically comes straight out. You kind of rotate it as you pull out as well." The actual removal/installation was not shown, and I could not pull mine out because I was scared to apply so much force that would break the plastic cover of the switch. Destined to live with windshield wipers that work whenever they feel like it in my 1988 Chevy S-10 truck. It is a very weird installation.

The nut behind the wheel. Yep, that's exactly what started my problems with that marvel of engineering-- the GM tilt steering wheel in my 1990 suburban. There was nothing wrong with it except it was a little bit loose. No problem, I'll just tighten it up. It was 5 years ago that I first opened that can of worms between my legs. I am a fairly good mechanic, I figured it out I got the wheel tighten. HOWEVER, pressed for time I did not put it all back together again. Soon after it started spitting a few bearings out now and then. Andy predictable happened, the bearing race deteriorated and then it was like driving a sloppy joe. So, what caused the problem to begin with, the loose steering wheel? Me, I caused it by using the steering wheel as a handle to hoist myself up into the suburban. That's what made it loose to begin with. I have not yet looked at this video but I know it's going to be a winner.

No time to edit all that irregularities of the story as I use voice to text. But I will edit later. Happy trails suburban men... And women. I UNDERSTAND BIGFOOT DRIVES A SUBURBAN... I did it again. Failing to look at your video first and or not fully reading all the instructions elsewhere I wasted a couple hours last evening trying to fit my my extra large hands and fat fingers between the steering column and the tight space adjacent to the two screws that one needs to remove the ignition switch. I read somewhere that you do not need to remove the steering column in order to replace the ignition switch. That was good enough for me that's where I stopped. But I bet that some other information was included which would have helped me. This is what it was. Looking under steering column removal in my repair manual I realized there are four bolts in the floor pan around the steering column which one would remove and split apart in order to remove the steering column. As soon as I saw that I knew that if I were to loosen those four screws take them out bolts whatever I'd be able to lower the steering column enough that I would be able to easily get those 5/16 and he said bolts out so that I can lower the steering column enough that I could easily remove the ignition switch. So that's what I'll do now I think it will go okay. One cannot simply skip steps when working with something as finally tuned as this GM tilt steering wheel. It's similar to replacing the logic board on a MacBook pro or the motherboard and a PC laptop you simply cannot gloss over important steps. Maybe you think you can just wing it but again another analogy... It's like trying to Wing brief speech in front of the chamber of commerce. If you only have 3 minutes you can't very well be formulating in your mind what to do. You have to have those will order thoughts follow your plan and deliver it as such. Practice practice. Again my steering column issues go back to 5 years ago. I thought at the time well I'll get this thing back together eventually. And I would have but I lost some of the parts over the years. If I had another 5 years meaning a total of 10 years to repair that steering column without any formal instruction I might be able to do it I might not. But time is precious. At 69 my hands are numb quite often so it's very difficult to hold a wrench properly especially a tiny little 5/16-in wrench up there against that little tiny hex head and a tight space that was not even designed for a small and much less Mr fat fingers. My general excuses I have the attention deficit disorder thing going so I get distracted a lot. Plus I'm so caregiver for my wife I was just stroke survivor. And it's so difficult to work on your vehicle you know you get down in there you're doing something maybe you're holding the starter up and trying to get it up in the right spot there. Or maybe you're struggling with the calipers getting the new brake pads in realizing that really you're supposed to take the calipers off do the right ways with it to shop don't do shortcuts but everything is a shortcut when you don't have time. By the way my BRAKE works quite well on that suburban. Notice I used the word brake singular---not brakes. The rear brakes stopped working on the go as I am leaking wheel cylinders which made the break she is useless so I have been using just the two front brakes for the longest time which is great you can make a pretty fast stop by the way if that happens to you be sure you're going straight you wouldn't want to try to make a messed up with only two front brakes on a curve for example. But the way it is now I try to be philosophical. With just that one front left brake doing all of the breaking you can make some very good quick last minute left hand turns if you need to which can't be a bad thing. Oh I have new brake pads the rotors need turning I'll never do that. I have the brake shoes and the wheel cylinders for the back I can do that job but I haven't done it they've been in the back of that suburban for about 5 years now. And yes I know this is irresponsible of me to just run with that one front left brake. But it's also irresponsible of me to Trump on it with that 454 engine and the flowmaster pipes no smog device here in Oregon I jump on that thing and man I love that acceleration and the sound of that engine The thrill of the acceleration along with the adrenaline excuse me a great sense of freedom. But seriously I actually drive the thing pretty slowly plan ahead on my stops. Mostly just driving around town here in Salem Oregon. Downshifting and automatic was that big 454 sounds great. Of course I hit the gas and RPM matches the spinning lower gears. I think it's pretty much My only thrill these days... In my mind's eye I pretend that I'm Mario and Dre driving a hot souped up 1990 GMC suburban rest all over looks like it couldn't get off the line to save his life and then bam there that old fart goes in that Rusty bucket. Not so great on gas of course especially when you're pedal to the metal most all the time. Okay well my wife will be up soon and I will not be able to go out and work on that suburban steering wheel. Just writing about that engine and that truck and learning something from the rest of you really is a great escape for me. It's A wonderful challenge. As you know the brain is a problem solving tool. It's quite remarkable sometimes you're stymied and you hit a stone wall and don't know where to go on the next part of the repair. Leave it for a day or two even a week sometimes and often times the answer will come to you because your brain's been working on the problem all that time. Okay you know senior citizens it's a long drawn out stories that nobody can follow and no one wants to listen to but it seems to make the old fart happy so we just smile and nod our head look at our watch and say oh my gosh I've got to run got an appointment. ciao.

@@SuburbanRanch yea, I had a little trouble also with the best way to route the wire for the turn signal lever in the little opening for it, not deep in the column but when I would lift it up to activate the blinkers for the passenger side the wire was getting between the lever itself and the top of the little opening for the lever to move in and it was pinching the wire, so I had to remove and re-seat the lever again... but it wasn't too bad.. I had to push it in and turn it to get it out... due to the key way it has.. neways, great video bro.. thanks

Usually, the new switches will already be de-pined from the connectors out of the box. Just follow the wire colors from the old switch when reinstalling. One of the best things about GM is that they use the same parts for decades. Virtually every GM column is the same across all models going back to the 1950's.

I've been working on my daughter's truck and have run into some problems, but one of the biggest was every listing for her wiper switch was wrong, her truck had a 5 wire switch and the listing had 7 wires. Standard automotive parts DS397 was wrong, Turned out to be a DS-817 DS-817 GM had discontinued making most of the parts we needed but it's going back together smoothly. I hope this helps someone down the road.

1990 suburban 2500... Ignition switch replacement. Had to remove or loosen the floor plate around the steering column and loosen two bolts behind the firewall around the steering shaft in order to pull the steering column down enough for me to get a wrench in there to get one of the two screws off let's say one is a hex head screw which I got out it's a 9/16 the other is a nut. Is it not 9/16 or does the nut have a retainer tab or clip that I can't see? I can't seem to get a wrench or socket on that sucker. It appears to me that I need to try to lower the column more or actually take the steering column out partially.

***************TIPS************************* i watched this entire video 2x last night to prepare for a wiper switch and blinker switch replacement. everything went ok except a couple things. pay super close attention to the little plastic piece that is the link between the high beam arm and the wiper switch. also, that ass of a snap ring that holds that steering lock disc to the steering shaft is a mofo. just slide the snap ring onto the puller tool and leave it until you reinstall. the plugs for the wiper switch and blinker switch went through the column pretty easy without removing the pins from the plugs. i just cut the wires from the old switches and electrical taped to the new plugs, you must bend the wires so the plugs go down the skinniest way and not 2- 5 inches wide. then lightly coat electrical tape with dielectric grease- smooth pull if you remove the column support bracket that holds the steering shaft to the dash frame( 2-15mm nuts and 4-13mm bolts). maybe this will help somebody. it was 120 degrees in the shop today and i probably screamed "fu**" 120 times today. next time will be an easy job, but the first time sucks pretty bad.

My blinker stops flashing when brake is applied telling me there’s a short somewhere. Your explanation as to how and why you were going to deal with the giant plastic clip that obviously won’t fit through the column…..Your explanation led me to my problem which I have avoided fixing for over five years now because I thought it would be extremely time consuming and tedious, neither of which I have the patience for. Cut the wires off the switch end and use them to pull the new ones through. Also no need to take that clear apart just to fix that shift spring. Pound the shift handle pin out pull the handle off pull the broken spring out with a angle pick and squeeze in a new spring. You took a five minute spring job and turned it into a nightmare. No kidding I do several a week on some white fleet trucks everyone is familiar with.

@@noblsht I should add I do several a week so easy for me. A small straight screw driver is also handy to compress and push it back in, small amount of grease is also good. When you go to do it ur gonna be like no way but trust me it's the way to do it. If you have to pull the shift Bowl off to replace the rack rod and rack gear then the spring is obviously easier but if you don't I wouldn't. I do enough that I have probably 10 or more of those springs laying around.

Hey bro, what led me to your video was me trying to find a video that dissected the steering column...i have a 94 k1500 and what i thought was my ignition switch going bad has turned into a problem that im completely stumped on...ive rebuilt almost everything on this truck and restored it as well...when i turn the ignition lock cylinder to the on position and then turn it to the crank position and start the truck as soon as it returns to the on position the truck shuts off along with the electrical that you would see in the on position...do you have any idea what that could be?...im trying to see what happens when the key is rotated to on and to start.

Why doesn't anybody take the steering wheel completely apart. To be fair you have the right truck in the wrong steering wheel. However I was hoping that you would take the locking mechanism for the steering wheel out because I can neither turn my ignition key or my steering wheel because the sack is full of rust and will not allow me to remove the key lock drum because the locking bar will not drop.

I've been having Hell resetting the original TS switch in my '88 Chevy G30 van. Took it off so I could replace the ignition key cylinder and now the damn thing won't set flush against all three screw bosses so sets raised up so the TS actuating rod can't engage the slot on the TS stalk. Nothing has broken on the switch nor off any other parts below it. The only odd part I have is the bolt that secures the key cylinder. My bolt has a tall hex head that accepts a socket while all these YT videos show a finish head torx that sets lower but doubt that's the cause of my woes since it's also original and the TS switch has operated normally over the decades. I could use some professional help before going crazy and using a mallet to knock the sucker in place.

@@SuburbanRanch It appears that the Summer heat made some bits expand so the alignment tabs couldn't slide past some housings. Finally had a cool day and night where the temps dropped to 72. In the morning I gave the switch a nudge with my thumb and it dropped down into place. Never seen that happen before with plastic parts. Also discovered that the 4-way button that came out intact had broken apart into 3 long pieces while sitting in a rag covered parts tray. I've only seen that happen to Bakelite when sprayed with electric contact cleaner. I'll Superglue the pieces together and to the screw to see if that holds up before buying another one.
