Like your videos and I'm not any kind of machinist or anything. However I appreciate your ability to explain various processes simply and clearly.

I know you've already answered this but i still cant help thinking, why not go the cross feed. The wheel would still be cutting with sharp edge that you relived.?

Your knowledge and passion for the trade is inspiring, very good communication and explanation as to what your trying to achieve, the trade lives on but unfortunately the trade collages are lacking the background experience and wisdom, there is a couple of generation gaps which is unfortunate.. Keep up the inspiring videos

Hey Don how come you didn't sweep the wheel from outside diameter to inside diameter and back again on your last pass using the Y axis feed ? I would have thought this would have cleaned up any steps . Always enjoy your videos and i always learn something !

+ian bertenshaw Yes, you could do it that way but we did not have enough travel to get the wheel completely off the part. I prefer this process because I can get it flat within a few tenths. Thanks for watching.

Why did you not feed the grinding wheel across the face of the plate? I really appreciate these lessons.
@SuburbanToolInc
@SuburbanToolInc 9 жыл бұрын
+Gkuljian We plunge grind as the wheel is dished in the middle and we are cutting with the sharp edges. Believe it or not the wheel would break down too fast that way and by the time we got across we would have a taper in it. Thanks for watching.

Could you also traverse across the face for final pass ?

I must confess I do not understand Don--why grind when you can swing it on a lathe,one setting and a straight across sweep.The lathe used like this is very accurate..Am I being too simplistic so am missing a trick or two??regards Ian

Possible Hard Spots in the Cast Iron that won't machine out leaving high spots. Only way to get rid of them is to grind. Also it is a precision grinding machine so trueing it up on the machine is the best option. Same when you fit a Magnetic Chuck to a Surface Grinder. You will grind the Chuck Face as a final true up of the machine.

Why didnt you work from outside to inside in one step instead of grinding 2 spots and clean up the middle

0.010-0.012 in. off? On a grinding machine? I don't understand how that happened either, Don. Excellent work and explanation as always.

+MrShobar Sometimes you just have to take it as there is no options or it is the easiest method. Sure it isn't a production setup, but considering you have just one part to grind, taking even more isn't that much of a job.

The faceplate has a lot of holes. If some of them were drilled after the plate was first manufactured could that cause runout?
@SuburbanToolInc

Did anybody check the spindle bore to be sure it wasn't the spindle running out causing the faceplate to run out? I imagine on this machine it is tapered for centers right?
@SuburbanToolInc

+bcbloc02 Good question.Yes , it was checked and was less than a thousandths.
