I mean, Brennan would've flipped the script if they tried to pull something that bland, but you get the idea.

Well, Ox is from a spell that's much more designed to just be a fast way of getting around than a combat summon. The rats come from a spell specifically aimed at summoning creatures for combat.

The thing that makes dimension 20 so special for me is how amazing Brennan is at DMing. As someone who has DMed and played several games, I’ve only ever had one dm that really made a world and encouraged us to role play and make our characters interesting. (It was not me I did not do that). But the world around the characters and the people they interact with are what really make a good game of DnD and allow the players to have fun to the fullest.

Right? It actually did look like a cinematic and evocative sad moment for the rat-man-bear! The juxtaposition made me feel both legitimately sad but also laugh out loud at the silliness of the tragic parody, and just at the unexpected mixture of emotions. I think it wouldn't have hit nearly as well if those rats hadn't been such good, faithful, and brave servants in the fight. And it's definitely only because of the shot and the music that I really noticed the moment! Have to say, I am truly loving Dimension 20 so far.

I gotta say, props to Brennan for how he's been handling how the wild magic surges sometimes mess with his plans. You could tell from last episode he was planning on having the brawl in the club with the vampires but once the wild magic did teleport and he brought them to the subway he was like "alright, I guess we'll figure this out" and then Siobahn reminded him about the L train exit in Nod and you could see the spark on his face like "Oh my god that gives me such an idea!" leading to this very unique encounter. Bravo good sir!

I think the wild magic was what vaporised the vampires; Nod is the one who teleported them to the subway. The battle-maps are built beforehand; Brennan's skill in disguising the plan while showing the players just enough of the plan that they'll follow it is beyond awesome. This battle-map did apparently have the signs changed because of Siobhan's joke though; Brennan couldn't believe she'd hit his prep so carefully, and he couldn't resist making it the actual station she mentioned.

It could as easily be a commentary on Communism: with the entire society being turned into cogs of the system (aka Santa zombies, attempts at turning out industrious identical workers); whims of somebody rolling through and changing things from choice to what is “best for the people” (aka the “gentrification”, just like the “modernization” of Communist regimes, normally leading to genocide like what was happening with the people dying); and the police just being a corrupt hit squad.

But I also don't know how I would show that in magic form, and since it's ephemeral and not really connected to the US by anything other than land mass, it's not connecting that dream to the most concrete aspects of what the "American Dream" is percieved as.

I know I'm like a year or so late to this, but I noticed this when watching. From 1:30:24 to 1:30:26, you can see Ally's D20 knock into the Pizza Rat D20 to change it from an 8 to a Nat 20. So technically speaking, Pete the Plug gave Pizza Rat a nudge in the right direction to help the train arrive.

I thought for sure Brennan was going to make the train arrive in X number of turns. Making it a flat 5% chance means that it could easily just *never* happen.

It was only the 5% chance on the first turn of combat. Every turn the DC got lower by 1 so eventually after 20 turns it would be a 100% chance for the spell to succeed.
