Thank you audioholic for recommending two subwoofers to balance bass sound across the room. Before when I had one sub placed at the front, it was too punchy when listening at the front, too boomy at the back and null at the middle. I did try switching phase but no matter the value it sounded the same. But when I placed second sub in my room, I realised phase control for both subs now makes a difference. My room is approximately 10 foot squared and currently placed two subs at the front and back. What I do for phase is first set both sub to zero phase. Then I listen at the front, middle and back. If there is punchy bass at front and back, and null at the middle, set first sub phase from 0 to 180. Then have a listen again. All front, middle and back should now have balanced response. If bass already sound smooth across the room, try switching first sub phase to 180 and hear whether it creates punchy bass at front & back with null at middle. In that case switch back to 0 and leave it. If bass sound quite smooth and switching phase from 0 to 180 didn't make much difference, switch the second sub phase to 90, then go back to first sub and try listening at both phase 0 and 180. I hope this helps for anyone with dual subs and phase control. Note that I only did in my 10 foot squared room and unsure if same solution can work at rectangle or asymmetric room.

You guys helped me out with this video. I have a 25+ year old dbx 15inch 250watt floor subwoofer, and just recently the amplifier that went with the sub finally had enough. So now my classic sub cant connect to my pioneer elite receiver because the sub has speaker wire instead of today's plug-ins. So I was able to find a subwoofer amplifier that helped but still after all connecting to amp and receiver, my sub was still popping in and out, until you show to connect the lfe on the amp to the sub ports to the receiver, all is golden now, the subwoofer is a classic and it still shakes and rattles the house

Hi Gene, I am new to Audioholics, great videos, very informative, thanks for doing what you do. Setting up a new home theatre this fall. My room is 24X16X8. From everything I have read or viewed, 2 subs are better than 1, and 4 subs are better than 2. The more subs the easier it is to eq the room and eliminate dead zones. My theater front end will be the PSB Imagine T3 Towers and Imagine C3 Center Channel. All other speakers in the setup will be PSB speakers. When it comes to Subs I am looking to go with either two SVS Ultra PB 1600, or 4 PSB Sub-series 450. The theatre will be a split of 60 % music listening- 40 % Home theatre. All the reviews indicate the two SVS Subs would do a great job below 20HZ whereas the PSB Subs would lack in this area. Having 4 PSB Subs would provide a great presence, but would their be a noticeable difference in performance. All thing equal what would you recommend?

Hi, Gene, I improved sound of my PSB 6i subwoofer a lot simply by putting a marble plate (15x17 inch) on top of the subwoofer. It improved the boominess a lot. My sub was tested by Sound&Vision to be a good sub to begin with. The improvement cab easily heard. I have no way to measure it. If you see this message, please try it and measure it in terms of FR and distortion. Thanks,

Good day guy. Love your show. To comment on on what I found that works for setting up subwoofers (jbl sub 150, Tannoy ts8, Wharfdale whs10e, amp Yamaha rxa 1050): setting amp subwoofer gain to about minus halfway (-5 in rxa1050) and just around 60% power on subwoofer amp. Tried this with all subwoofers and it works extremely well. It also works for different amplifiers as well (tried on Marantz sr5007). What this setting does is use the signal only from the amp and uses the subwoofer amp to adjust volume. This opposes having a high gain in the amp and a medium gain in the subwoofer. To summarize, the lfe on amp is used only for the signal (not a highly amplified signal) and the subwoofer amp generates volume. The subwoofer is not amplifying an already (highly) amplified signal. Just to add that at minus halfway, sub doesn't necessarily cut off.

What you said makes a lot of sense the sub woofer is better at producing lower frequencies than the speakers and speakers at better at producing the mids and the high frequencies. Tbh I thought I knew best as I have been into cinema sound since the mid 90's and didn't want to deprive my speakers of the lower frequency. Its never sounded better. More powerful sound and damn the channel separation sounds better than ever too. Hats off. Thanks! P. S I have mordaunt short mezzo range and my woofer sounds even better too and just a really nice balance.

Good info. One thing I have never ever found discussed anywhere is a more and more common situation where you deal with adding a dedicated sub to a multiple powered tower setup. I would love to hear your input to this situation. I came to realize that while the powered towers were great from a perceived loudness perspective they lacked the deep visceral grunt capability needed for a real punch in the gut perspective that a dedicated sub gives you. So, in my case after listening to many opinions, especially concerning multiple subs. I came to the conclusion that if you have quality powered towers and you want deep down grunt power you do not need multiple subs. What you need to add is a sub that can really dig deep. Set your AV system crossover for it's lower setting. In my case 50hz. This allows the dedicated sub to do its thing and allows the powered towers to do what they do best, that is mid and upper bass. The mid and upper bass frequencies are far more directional and give the same apparent affect as having multiple subs acoustically while the dedicated sub handles the deep bass grunt work whose frequencies are far far less directional. This is my opinion and observation on this more and more common consumer situation. I would love your opinion on this subject. As I said, a great many people buy powered towers thinking that they are an ultimate package only later to realize they are great but, they do not give you the deep powerful low level punch that many people really want. Especially when watching SciFi or action flicks.
@Audioholics

This sounds like a good setup but there are a couple of concerns: 1. you will truncate the LFE signal to the sub if your processor doesn't have a separate LFE crossover setting, 2. You lose some of the benefits of multi-sub modal averaging since all of the bass sources are not covering the exact same frequency bandwidth. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aniqZIqle9Rsh5o
@al8603cl
@al8603cl 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply and attachment I appreciate it. My AV Receiver has LFE crossover settings. I set it at 50hz. I agree with the multi-sub modal comment but, I believe that this is minimized to an extent with the fact that I have 4 powered towers for mains and rears and they are all emanating the same frequencies above 50hz where most of the content is and, as freqs below 50hz are largely non directional I believe it a very close approximation of a multi sub setup.
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 7 жыл бұрын
Yes 4 powered towers will give you some of the benefit of modal averaging, but you do lose it some of it with the sub operating below 50Hz which may or may not be a problem. Non-directional does NOT mean modal properties are to be ignored. It's best if you pull some in-room measurements at your listening positions to see what's going on.

I have down loaded a few bass tone generators. And, I went to my local Shack and bought a db meter. I have 4 DefTech BP9040's powered towers 300 watts per tower to the built-in subs and an SC8000. I have adjusted to the powered towers and the sub to output an even sound level so that the sub is not over powering the towers and so that the towers sound pleasing to my ear at the various freqs that the tone generator is generating from 20hz to 120hz. Am I missing anything? Is this sufficient? Or is there something I am missing completely that you would recommend?

PHASE QUESTION: I often hear people ask, "Should I have my subwoofer set at 0 Phase or 180 Phase." This is an important question and I understand the logic behind it. If it was simply a matter of a Phase switch on a subwoofer, the answer would be fine - there would be only two possible choices (0 or 180). However, it is not that simple. My A/V Receivers from Onkyo and Sony allow me to select 0 or 180. This means there are FOUR possible scenarios. Those scenarios are: AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 0 AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 180 AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 0 AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 180 I fully understand that if you have your subwoofer in the front of the room, you should have both the A/V Receiver set at 0 and the Subwoofer set at 0. However, my confusion and question relates to when the subwoofer is in the back of the room. I know by subwoofer should be at 180 Phase. ... However, does this mean BOTH the A/V Receiver and the Subwoofer should be set at 180? Or does this mean only ONE of them should be set at 180? In other words, I'm asking if you want the Subwoofer set at 180, does that mean the A/V Receiver also needs to be set at 180? If not, does this mean placing both the A/V Receiver at 180 and the Subwoofer at 180 will create a form of 360 Phase? If you could explain this, I would appreciate it.

On my Yamaha I set the crossover to the max when I initialized the Ypao... after adjusting I then set the speakers to small ( B&W M-1) then adjusted the crossover on my Yamaha to 80 Hz AND my Sub also to 80 Hz.....do I need to keep my Sub at 150 Hz all the time? Also, consider your sub's frequency response relative to your other speakers. Some smaller subs only go down to the mid 30's hz, which may be on par with your stereo mains in a surround system. If the sub has similar bass extension to other speakers present, the Audioholic may want to consider running all 3, or just 2, or just 1 depending on how much bass energy their tastes desire and their acoustics support. Typically more subs are better as they give better seat to seat consistency, and obviously the solution is to upgrade the sub to have extension over the full bandwidth. But if they're all have similar extension, a well crafted floor standing speaker will have a pretty smooth crossover, and adding in a solo woofer to the party may go totally cool-aid man on your low end. :D OH YEAH!

Jose Rivera Nope. Leave it at the default 8 ohm setting. All it will do is choke off the receivers power supply to change the setting. Best to just monitor your listening levels and maybe set a maximum volume setting within the receivers audio settings and rely on it's built in protection circuits if there's any issues.

I've heard you say set them all to small and set the crossovers to 80Hz a bunch of times, but what does setting them to small actually do? What is the receiver actually doing with the low frequencies and how does it tie in with LFE + Main? I understand LFE, but not sure what's actually happening when you change the speaker size setting. On an older Denon I had, it would automatically set the crossover and send all the low frequencies to the sub when they were set to small, but it didn't have crossover settings in the menu. With the ability to set the crossovers separately what does the size setting accomplish? Thanks for all the great informational videos!

Thanks for the info! I have a question. Should I follow the directions for subwoofer setup from the Sub instructions or the amp instructions? I have Fostex GX250s for fronts with Fostex CW250 subs. These are designed to be used together and include instructions for pairing (subwoofer crossover and level). However, my Yamaha CX-A5200 and MX-A5200 pre amp, amp cobo recommend a different setup for the YPAO. Is there a clear favorite or do I just need to experiment?

I would set the speakers with the speaker instructions. Run ypao and if the receiver maxes out the speakers settings to balance the sound adjust the speakers so the receiver doesn't max the settings.

Hi Gene. My home, when it was built 15 years ago, was pre-wired for 7.1. The builder used coax cable to handle the subwoofer which has coax-to-RCA converters at either end to make my connections. I purchased a 2nd subwoofer less than a year ago and had to use a Y connector to hit both subs. I now have recently purchased an Anthem AVR 60 which has two subwoofer outs but I am only using only one of them because of my current wiring. My question is, would it be worth the effort for me to re-wire, getting rid of the coax and replacing it with two subwoofer cables? Thanks!

Bob Inocencio Only if the Anthem's sub pre amp outputs are truly independent and capable of setting separate levels and distances. If not it's just an additional mono line out and the splitters are fine.

WOW, what an improvement. In my apartment, the low end frequencies from the two speakers was cancelling out due to the shape of the room. So I had to switch the polarity of the woofer in one speaker to fix the problem. Fortunately when I built my speakers, I added 2 switches per speaker box to reverse the polarity of both the mid-range speakers, and/or the tweeters. So I set them in the 180 polarity reverse position, and then reversed the polarity of the wires hooked up to the speaker box.

I've literally been trying different stuff with my subwoofer for like 3/4 years now. Done every trick from every video, placed it everywhere in the room. But I just can't get that damm sound I want from it. It always sounds so uneven. In some parts (for exempel a movie) I can't hear anything from my subwoofer, not even a little. But in other parts it feels like it's going to blow up. I never get that smooth bass that feels like it covers everything, from voices, to music, to the gun and explosion sounds. And sub and speaker are actually pretty decent. I've heard them in action by others and it sounds great (almost the same space as the room I use it in). Maybe one day I wil get that sweet, sweet sound!

Hello guys. These may be dumb questions after watching this video, but I just want to be sure I'm getting the most out of my equipment set up. So I have a Sony STR-DE625 teamed with a Polk PSW10 (sub) and JBL N26 (sats). Presently, I have a single RCA cable going from the top "WOOFER AUDIO OUT" (there are two both black and not labeled L/R) to an RCA splitter and into both labeled L/R inputs on the sub. This sounds okay, but 1) should I just be using one RCA stereo cable to connect both woofer outputs to both sub inputs? 2) or should I use mono cable to connect one woofer out to the white L input on the sub? 3) Does having two woofer outputs on this receiver make it 5.2 channel? 3) There's no LFE on the sub nor any switch to bypass the crossover. What should my variable crossover setting be? Thank you for any help you can offer.

I have a very simple question. I have a 7.1 AVR, but it allows you to connect two subwoofers. Based on the documentation, both subs are supposed to get the same signal. My question is this: Do you keep both subs at the same phase or do you have one of them 180 degrees out? Thanks in Advance.

Really enjoyed your video. I'm setting up a system (Sony STR-DN1060, Old JBL Studio Series speakers and subwoofer) and noticed a distinct difference when setting sub level on auto-cal as compared to test tones. Level sub with pink noise test tone to the other speakers, and the AVR setting comes out close to zero with the sub volume at half-way. Meanwhile you hear very little bass for real-world listening. With auto-cal, a series of low tones are used (no pink) and the AVR sub-level comes out at about +10db, and the base sounds good. Learned this a while back using the Avia DVD that pink noise doesn't work for sub-level. Lot of Googling and I don't see that mentioned very often.

Hi guys. I've had my gear a long time now. It's been with me through three properties, so is quite dated now, but still works well enough. I probably need to set it up again. I have a Yamaha DSP AX2 amp and a Paradigm servo X15 subwoofer, which is an absolute monster. The sub comes with a separate cross over unit which has phase, cut off, and level control knobs. I have always set the cut off at 80hz. Are you saying this is wrong and works against the amps LLF output? Should I be setting this up at max and letting the amp decide what frequencies go to the sub? Cheers guy's.

Hey guys, another excellent video! My sub have stereo inputs and my receiver have dual sub outputs. I have only one sub, should I run a stereo RCA cable from the receiver to the sub or should I run a mono cable?
@thomashoctor8687

Christopher Carr Mono cable from the subwoofer pre out to usually the left line level RCA input or the one that has LFE or mono written on it. If not it's usually the left one I believe. The stereo inputs are for those using a 2 channel stereo receiver where the sub sums the bass coming from both the left and right speaker's attached to the stereo receiver.

Hi guys! thank you for the video! Seeing you with a removed amp from a self-powered sub makes me think I should ask you this: I have an issue with receiving RF on my sub (I live in direct line of sight of my city's main antennae) and I've tried everything: balance XLR cable, pads, etc. I even disassembled one active speaker and built a little internal Faraday cage around the amp, which helped, but not enough. My next step is to totally remove the amp, as you have, and either put it in a metal box or just run the sub passively with an external, normal (i.e. in its own metal box) amplifier. Is this my only way out? or should I plaster the inside of my sub with tin foil? Any advice appreciated. (My sub is an Energy ES-18XL, which does not happen to have the convenient passive binding posts the one in your video has) Thank you!

I have a dilemma. In my 5.1 home theatre system the center speaker is a Dynavoice Challenger c-5 mk1, and I recently noticed that out of the two 5.25inch woofers one sounds louder than the other (even tried swapping them, same problem). Why is this happening? The speaker receives the a mono signal from the AV receiver (LFE) so there is no problem with the balance. Or maybe the passive crossover in the speaker is faulty somehow. Please, what should I do?

I need clarification. If you are using the subwoofer preamp out from AVR to the sub's LFE, you must always turn the crossover dial on the subwoofer far right (i.e. 200hz) to avoid doubling the crossover points, correct? What's the difference between LFE filtered and LFE unfiltered? Thanks

It's confusing which way to go about this. The max volume is 40 on the sub. When matching the 75db it reads at volume 3. But I've read starting at 50% this is a huge difference in volume when calibrating both times. Which is more correct way? Thanks

I wouldn't do that, instead just plug one sub into the receiver and the other into the sub you just plugged in...providing it has a line out on that sub. If not than, you have to use a "Y" cable, where you plug the single end into the receiver and then the two subs into each end of the other two RCA plugs on the "Y" cable.
