I wish more language apps had Bulgarian 😢 I’m trying to relearn it because it was my first language and I’ve forgotten it since learning English. I would love a video about why you chose Bulgarian and what you like about it ❤ 😊

Me too! I feel like I've tried every app that has Bulgarian lol I feel like any app that adds Bulgarian is pretty guaranteed to suddenly gain me as a new user 😂 I'll add that to my list of videos to make in the future! I feel like that could be a great topic for a Bulgarian diary when I have more of the vocab to talk about that!

My favorite app for learning Bulgarian is "Learn Bulgarian - 5000 phrases" it looks super dorky, it has a little bee as the mascot, but I've used it on and off for a few years and I use it almost every day right now. Успех!

I’ve been pretty firmly “in a rut” in most areas of my life but I think I’m finally on the way out, it’s always so refreshing to see these ups and downs in your vlogs as well. Also, I am SO tired of being a beginner in Spanish, I’m glad someone else said it! I get that the intermediate plateau is real and everything but some days I’d pay hard cash to be in the intermediate plateau 😂

With Russian, when I have momentum, I learn new vocabulary, take iTalki lessons, and push myself out of my comfort zone. When I'm frustrated, I tend to go back to review the basics and things I've already learned to gain confidence, and to help solidify my weak areas. Have you considered a 30 day sprint with Bulgarian?
@PolyglotProgress
@PolyglotProgress 2 жыл бұрын
I might at some point! This is my first time doing a sprint with classes. I did the Add1Challenge in Bulgarian my first time I tried to study it which can definitely be counted as a 90 day sprint (or marathon of sorts), but I've never done a speaking/class-based sprint til now! Now that I know that I like it I'm definitely interested in doing something like it for my other languages. I feel like I may need to be a slightly higher level in Bulgarian though before I'm ready to speak for an hour everyday so I'll need to do some modification :)

@@PolyglotProgress Every few months I'll do about five half hour lessons in Russian, conversational based. I get so stressed about them, I space them out a few months apart. I can't imagine if I do it daily, would I even survive the first week? But like you, I always feel I'm on the cusp of A2 to B1. Maybe that's the thing I need to make the leap to the next level.

I think I've done pretty good at my goal for the year which is to add more purpose to my language learning. One thing I started doing was taking an online course IN my target language. I mainly do that when I feel like studying, but I'm bored of my usual routine. I like learning about new topics and learning more vocabulary than usual. It kind of makes it easier to focus on new vocabulary when there's a purpose.

Yes! I'm doing the same thing. I'm currently taking a UX design course in French haha I haven't come across any new vocab, but it's definitely been a fun way to stay in contact with French and just double up on things I'm learning

I was eating dinner while watching this and looked up like 'huh?' when you mentioned scottish gaelic I was like i learn that! It's just not many people even speak it fluently let alone learn it like me so that was nice:) also props for pronouncing gaelic properly for the Scots version. I love your videos:))

When I was still A1ish in Korean I was so frustrated with how long it was taking me to learn. Previously, I had studied German and Spanish and I just felt I made progress soooo much faster in those languages (obviously, because they are so much more similar to English). It's definitely frustrating~
@PolyglotProgress
@PolyglotProgress 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! This is exactly it for me with Bulgarian. I definitely hit more of a B1 level at a much faster pace in German and Spanish than it's even taken me to hit lower A2ish in Bulgarian. Totally fine since I love it and I get why since I can't rely as much on other languages, but definitely makes it feel more frustrating!

I am glad you are learning the language. It is a descendant of the first written Slavic language, called now Old Church Slavonic and deserves more attention

I can relate so much to you feeling dissapointed with Bulgarian. After nearly every italki lesson, regardless of the language, I feel like I did not progress whatsoever and question why am I doing all of this anyways. But then, I just remind myself what I can do and that is so much, considering that at some point, I did not know a single word in these languages. Furthermore, I look at those languages which already graduated university (meaning, they are no longer being studied, just used and while doing so. keep growing naturally). Language learning is just a very slow and time consuming process. Unless you have time and energy to study 8 hours a day, it will take you many years to reach your desired level. And those years are certaintly not linear nor always pretty. The more we embrace this fact, the easier it is to accept the slow progress and our current level.

Can't you make a video of how to really assess the level of the language? For example. now I'm reading "The wheel of time" and for every 100 pages I meet 3 - 5 unfamiliar words and it drives me mad. I wonder if it's a lot or a little, how bad it is. ;)
