This is an effective way to keep your sheep healthy with rotational grazing while fertilizing your orchard at the same time. When integrating your rotational grazing into an orchard, you provide fresh manure and urine for the trees and grass, as well as allow the sheep to have fresh thick grass. This orchard has not been grazed all summer and Lann shows how lush it is despite the summer drought.

My apple trees in the NC piedmont end up looking horrible around midsummer. Covered in cedar apple rust first and then defoliated by Japanese beetles. Yours look much better. What do you do for them?

Thank you for asking. I put a suffice amount of compost from the barn at the base every year when I clean it out. If you don't have a barn you could easily find a place that sells compost in bulk. I have a friend that used wood chips from a local tree company that he got for free - some of the wood was diseased and harmed his apple trees - so I recommend using only a composted material. I also spray my trees (leaves and branches) with a composted cow manure tea. I have a video on how to make the tea in my library of videos. I hope this helps. Thank you for reaching out.

How many sheep do you graze in the 150/100 orchard? You said for about a week. Thank you for your response. I am new to having sheep and loving every minute of it

Great question. I was running 12 at the time but you could fit more in if you had a higher stand of grass or just shorten the days. I hope this helps.

Just put a square of wire around so it looks like hot wire - they will avoid it

I’ve done that but is is mainly for the predators that snoop around when I have them outside of the woven wire

Do the fire ants bother your sheep? We struggle with them here too and that’s one of my concerns.

The only problem we had is when you breed to late in the season and they are born after they start to come out of the ground in the spring. A new born lamb on the ground with afterbirth on it is sadly great for a mound of fire ants near by. Look at orange oil for your fire ants. There are a few videos on youtube about it. I purchased a bottle and will try this year. I hope this helps. Thank you for the response.

What's the browse height for your sheep?

I browse them to about 4 inches. I do not want to see any ground when I move them to another pasture

@@StewartFarmApiary I was asking about browse height for trees. I'm looking at getting some sheep to graze in a young orchard and need to know how high do I need to build the wire mesh tree guards. Some say 4'5, others more.

@@---yu7ff I honestly would worry more about the strength and girth of the trees. sheep will rub against the trees and snap them if they are too weak. I would say 4.5 feet as well
