I recently ordered a variegated Jade plant from a grower tree that I had never dealt with before. I was surprised to receive a lovely variegated Jade that was at least 10” tall with two good sized branches. I never expected such a large plant. There was no information in the listing about the size or age of the Jade. I expected from the photo of it that it would be about four or five inches. What concerned me was that this large Jade came in a 3” pot completely root bound! It was a solid 3” block of roots! Even after rinsing the roots with water to loosen them they would not budge except for a few on the very bottom of the block of roots. It had also arrived completely soaked and wrapped in what looked like some kind of green plastic wrap. I have to question logic in wrapping any kind of plant in plastic during the spring and summer months. It took only three days from the date it was sent out to arrive at my home. I took it out of the packing right away. I waited to repot it only two days because it was so wet and so root bound. I was afraid of rot because it was not going to dry out in that tiny plastic pot. I have had plants of many kinds for quite a while but have never seen such a hard block of roots! I potted it in dry soil that I had prepared and did not water it for two weeks when the root block was completely dry. I am still waiting to see if it survives. It looks alright but it is not showing any signs of growth. Is it common for sellers to send out succulents so completely drenched at the roots like that? I know that a Jade of that size should have been changed to a larger pot long ago. I am amazed that it grew that large in such a tiny pot. It is certainly no disaster like the ones in the video. I guess I am just still shocked at what happened. I guess if the plant lives that I at least have a very nice Jade plant. I realize that they like to be a bit root bound but this was beyond anything that I have ever seen!

It's unsurprising that you got the jade plant in such a state. Some cheap nurseries use almost clay-like soil for some succulents like the Crassula ( Jade Plants) because they will survive and grow in such a bad medium. The dry climate in Californiais so conducive to grow these succulents that they can plant in any soil and forget about them, yet, they still survive. I guess over time, after several watering or even after soaking the roots in water, they will loosen up. If you plant them on the ground, the plant can grow bigger even more.
