Thank you for talking about planting in different types of soils!

Knowing your soil (even generally) matters SO MUCH! Citrus is especially sensitive to slow draining soil.

We have a 9 variety citrus hedge lol. They are great for that. Flowers smell amazing and then fruit. Never white washed our trees. Aussie sun is pretty strong but never a problem. Oh for shady areas, the Aussie finger lime does well. They normally grow under trees and so tolerate shade the best.

I'm trying to convince my mom to plant a solid citrus hedge at another property, and she has yet to do it. We'll see if she ends up with an edible hedges after this
@matthewfarrell3172 жыл бұрын
@@TheBusyGardener i can 100% see this happening. Citrus make the most amazing hedges. Add some feijoa and riberry/lilly pilly and it can't be beat.

Another, less than fun tip, for those planting citrus in Southern California: Make sure to research HLB disease (Citrus Greening) so as not to transport citrus materials between quarantine zones and to buy from a reputable seller. Citrus really is a wonderful thing for all the reasons you mentioned! 🧡💛💚

Citrus greening is a DEVASTATING disease, and definitely one to be vigilant about. Totally agree to buy citrus from reputable growers who check for this issue

keep an eye on that tango, it grows very quickly. i just planted a tango and dekopon last november and they are both very vigorous. also planted a tahoe gold a few weeks ago. good luck on your trees

We're hoping for a vigorous tree! My mom has plenty of time to get out there and keep it in line :)

Oh man...If I could I would fill my property with citrus trees! I grew up in Whittier CA and our backyard was filled. Sadly we since moved to Chicago IL zone 5b and no chance for them outdoors. This vid definitely took me back, thinking of all the varieties just right out our back door. I can't do citrus but this year im expanding my urban orchard a bit, I've ordered 2 more apples varieties, a edible crab apple and a Italian ever bearing plum. I just love the idea of having wide variety of fruits but keeping them short for ease and less production, thanks for all the great info in your vids.

We often want what we can't have, and citrus deserves that longing. But looks like you're making the best out of 5b!

Awesome vid. Where do you typically buy your fruit trees? home depot, lowes or mom and pop local nurseries or online orchard nurseries?
@TheBusyGardener2 жыл бұрын
Mostly local nurseries where I have more control over roostock (mainly for deciduous), but lots of my citrus from big box stores

what if your soil is like concrete? Should you amend then?
@TheBusyGardener2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't amend in that case either. Plant it higher (likely has drainage issues). Oftentimes a healthy mulch layer does wonders in softening the soil, both through moisture, breakdown of organic material, and preventing the sun from baking it

Hi Cameron, I purchased a gold nugget mandarin and it’s in a 4”x4” pot. I was planning on planting it in the ground would that be ok going into winter? or should I plant it in a pot and wait until spring? I know that variety is cold hardy but wasn’t sure if it’s the right time to put it in the ground.
@TheBusyGardener2 жыл бұрын
Should be fine as long as you don't disturb the rootball too much. The tree won't know the difference between the pot and the ground, other than the ground will offer more consistent temps. Go for it!

I'm jealous of your mom that you do all this for her. Wow! I live in LA County and would like to know where I can find a reputable seller of this Tonto tree. I'm willing to travel anywhere in Southern California to pick it up. Also, what do you think of the Clementine tree? Where can I purchase? Thank you so much for your expertise.
@TheBusyGardener2 жыл бұрын
So kind of you, and she's worth it! 😊 we bought all those citrus trees at the Home Depot in El Cajon. I know they've imposed a citrus quarantine in a few areas so haven't seen any recently. Maybe you can find them in your area. Too early to tell how we like these trees, but on paper and reviews they're just right

Since you mulched with bark, do you do anything to combat the nitrogen fixing that commonly occurs with straight bark?
@TheBusyGardener2 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, bark binds nitrogen more heavily when it's mixed into the soil vs when it's a layer on top. I'm generally feeding citrus with a higher N fertilizer than my deciduous, and haven't seen any lack of vigor

How far from my fence should I plant my lemon tree? I was gifted a lemon and a fig tree and have no idea what to do with them lol
@TheBusyGardener2 жыл бұрын
Generally, it's easiest to plant as far from any structures as possible. What the furthest distance you can plant? It's possible to grow citrus as a hedge, which works well against structures like a fence. Fig can be a little less forgiving, but can be planted within a few feet

Inspired by your multi plantings, I'm planning to create a barrier type hedge in my front yard to block the view of my neighbor's driveway. I bought a Meyer lemon, minneola tangelo, pixe tangerine, satsuma mandarin and gold nugget mandarin. They will all be fairly close together. The neighbors think I'm crazy but I have faith it will work 😆

Good video. My only critique is that your soil was soft, uncompacted, with lots of valuable air spaces, and you just destroyed all that by compacting it with your foot.
